Thoughts on Storybook Dining - very mixed reviews

Hi all,

Well I stalked and stalked, and I was finally able to get Storybook Dining this summer. (It was super hard to get, like when Be our Guestfirst came out - which ironically we are skipping this year, since it became a signature it’s not work the dining points). Anyway, I was on Trip Advisor (After DISboards, my favorite site) and I saw how mixed the reviews were.

Just wanted to check in regarding this. Is it as bad as some of the reviews say it is?

Thanks, Marina :cutie:

My family really enjoyed this meal. First, if you are on teh DDP, it is a very good use of a credit, and the bonus is tha the food is good. WE had a crew of 7, from 17 years of age to 66, our old Grumpy Guy! LOL!

The service began well and just got better and better. WE all enjoyed most of the dinner, however we found desserts to be SWEET. The beverages are wicked fun, and since you are on the dining plan you do not have to decide if spending that kind of money on a magical drink is going to be worth it. It is! LOL!

I cannot remember all the choices we made, but my prime rib was very good, and I know my DD loved whatever non beef thing she ordered.

Best of all is the interaction with Snow, Dopey and Grumpy, as well as that photo with the Evil Queen. The reviews are mixed, however my family went in expecting to enjoy the meal and we did. WE tempered the expectation knowing it is no longer signature, so you will not be served teh same quality as if you were dining at Artist Point, which is the restaurant that was in place prior to this dining experience, and I feel that may be some of the issue.

I haven't eaten there since the change over to Storybook dining, but my friend at work was there over spring break. She said the characters were fantastic, but they did not really much like the food.

We enjoyed our meal in March—the character interaction was great! I thought the entrees were better than the appetizers. The kids meals were great for my 5 year old—her app was a cute plate of veggies and cheese and fruit. We would go back—actually trying to find a reservation for July now!

I think as with all of the restaurants, you are going to get a mixed bag of reviews...Some have really off days and sometimes service can be less than ideal. It also depends on you and your family, what type of food you like, weighing out the options that you would do instead of this, does it fit into your plans for the day and are you a "character type " of family, and if you are on the dining plan or paying OOP. My DD ( 24) and I were a firm no on this for awhile but then decided that it will be a must for our trip . We are on the dining plan so the 1 credit is a great value. Location works as we have a ADR for the day that we head back to MK for Evening EMH. My daughter is a villain lover and we are very excited to see the Evil Queen ( and the dwarfs too)- also I personally think that the food seems to get more positive reviews than some of the other restaurants that I have read about. We will be going in Sept so I cant speak on specific experience but those were the items that helped us in choosing to try it.

This was my review. It was January, things may have changed.

I had it booked again for next trip, but I have cancelled it. Most the issues were more "our" issues with the noise level, otherwise I might have kept.

I think everyone should try it once. It was surely different from any other character meal from start to finish, the characters were great and most the food was good but am sure they will always adjust the menu.

Went tonight. Said no to TiW, yes to AP and DVC. So 10% off was it. Maybe later they will add it back in.

We arrived way early so after wandering the hotel and outside I just attempted to check in early at 4:15 for a 4:45 ADR. No problem and we were seated immediately. I think we hit the jackpot with the corner window table overlooking waterfall and clear view of Queen. I loved the spinning tree in the middle of the table for the small dishes. They really did a good job of transforming the restaurant while keeping it classy.

Our server was excellent start to finish. I know some have not been happy with attitude or service but couldn't have been happier. She truly seemed to be enjoying the experience.

Appetizers: We liked them all. I think the sauce for the pie was a perfect compliment, the shrimp tasted fresh (I usually avoid seafood other than on coast) with an interesting flavor and the soup was delicious. I WANT one of the mini cast iron pots, on the hunt now.

Entrees: I should have listened to folks about prime rib. It was very fatty and a struggle to cut. A real struggle. Prime rib should cut easily. Luckily it was huge so even taking out the fat trim there was plenty to eat. I would not order again. The potatoes ... I forgot to switch and my potato loving guy didn't finish them. Popover I tried, good. I had the veal shank and it was delicious. I was very surprised by all the layers of flavor. While stacked each item had a distinct flavor and the winter greens were the biggest surprise, I can't even describe the marinade they had.

Desserts: SWEET SWEET. Clever themes, loved they were all very different. Apple was my favorite, had more a cheesecake taste so less sweet. Couldn't finish the others just too much sugar. I LOVE caramel corn so that was welcomed and only took small bite of heart, just too much sugar after the other desserts.

Snow White was wonderful with DS and couldn't have been happier with interaction.
Dopey was such a delight and came twice to our table. He worked well with stress DS was having at that point.
Grumpy was perfect Grumpy and by then I had a Grumpy too.
Queen = perfection. She was stunning to look at and had it nailed.
All signed, Snow White kissed his book as well.
The Queen's backdrop was done well as it looks great in photographs.
Loved the colorful twinkling lights in the trees.

Downside for US:
We don't do character meals much anymore, been there - done that - none new ........ but of course this one we booked twice. It was LOUD. I didn't think about them doing an announcement for characters as they entered, playing segments of loud music and people singing. It was a bit intense for DS and add to that several small babies screaming. Sound traveled quite well in there and he asked for headphones (on top of ear plugs) but it was still permeating. Something to be ready for. Now had we had a night time (dark) meal, it might have helped him if the room stays more dim (and if Mom didn't leave meds in car since at time he was so excited and happy to go in).

We were two and at a four top. But there were plenty of legit tables for two, and a solo diner next to us was at one. She seemed to have as much attention as all the other tables. I spoke to the podium on way out to give my compliments, said it was selling well and they even made them new fancy name tags so they are feeling a permanence.

We went last week with a party of 6 adults and enjoyed the experience overall. Apps were gross except for the mushroom soup, but the entrees were pretty decent. We definitely enjoyed our alcoholic drinks. Everyone was fairly divided on dessert - especially the sour apple (I liked it). Service was fine, fairly unremarkable. Characters were a lot of fun and really made the experience! My 58yo Dad said it was his favorite dinner. Probably not a meal I’d do every trip, but definitely worth checking out especially if you’re on the dining plan.

We ate there for a 4:30 reservation last Friday, May 3. We checked in about 20 minutes early and were seated right away.

The character interaction was great and the best I ever had with Snow White. It was our first time meeting the Dwarves.

We thought the appetizers and deserts were delicious, wishing we had more of the appetizers. Hubbs had the prime rib and I had the Kingklip - no complaints on the entrees.

The area we found room for improvement was handling the line to meet the Queen. It got long at one point and weaved in b/t tables of diners trying to eat.

We ate there in March with 2 adults and 3 kids (boy 11, boy 11, girl 7). We loved it. The food was great. The presentation was fantastic and the kids meal was amazing. They presented it well but it was stuff that a kid would eat. Our prime rib was really good. Character interaction was fabulous!

Ate there December 29th 2018 and my kids still talk about this meal. It was their favourite meal of the trip. Food was okay but the characters were awesome! I considered booking it again for our stay at AKL in August but decided to try new restaurants instead. Will probably book it again in the future.

We just went last week and really enjoyed it! Great character interaction and the food is better than most character meals at Disney. At least on par with Be Our Guest dinner. My husband said the Prime Rib was just kind of plain but the pork shank was amazing. All of the appetizers were good and the desserts were great too. I don't think you can go wrong for 1 TS credit.

Just got back from a trip where we dined at Storybook Dining at Artist Point. First off, it’s super convenient if you’re staying at Wilderness Lodge.

Anyway, it’s not an all-out dining experience like Be Our Guest, but it’s nice. The dining room could use a little more theming IMO but there are nice touches like the place settings and the sparkly bramble thing on the ceiling. The appetizers were ok, but mostly I thought the soup was AMAZING. My partner chose a steak entree that was good. My pasta entree was lackluster. The desserts were awesome. The cocktails looked fun, but I guessed they’d be too sweet or syrupy for me so I didn’t get one. Service was very good.

I don’t usually do a lot of character dining or meets and greets, but the Snow White on duty was top notch. She moved like her, spoke like her, etc. She was really great. Her, Grumpy and Dopey make the rounds. There is a staff person walking around to make sure they make it to each table. The Evil Queen was also great.

While the “into the woods” theme does translate, my cons are with the theming and decor. I like dim dining rooms, and this one was not, but I guess that’s because people understandably want to take photos. I really disliked how the photo op with the Evil Queen was smack dab in the middle of the dining room. I felt she should have been tucked away a little more.

I don’t know - never have I really been blown away by a meal at Disney World, but this was pretty good. The characters were fun and really well in character. I would go back, it’s a new favorite, and I’m sure they’ll make little adjustments to improve the place as time goes on.

As you asked....

The former Artist's Point is DEAD. This is now a 1 point Character Dining thing.

What to expect: Bad food, lots of entertainment. That's pretty much in line with ALL "Character Dining" at WDW. One get's characters, or good food. Not both.

All personal opinion - I'm not necessarily right, no one else is necessarily wrong.

Have you eaten there? I have no problem with people sharing opinions about food they have eaten, but if you have chosen to avoid this restaurant, you may not be the best person to insist the food is bad. FTR, it is not. I know the difference between fine dining and simply decent food, and have been exposed to both. My Dad was a Chef, and a damn good one. He was well known for his L'Escoffier dinners, and hiswine pairings were perfection. His sous chefs, under his training won awards at the annual food shows that took place on a yearly basis. He loved my Mom's home cooking and would never turn his nose up at a well cooked meal. We were taught to respect that there are all kinds of meals, and that one is not better than another, just different.

I probably will get points for this, but someone needs to tell you that your derogatory comments that seem to be made without even stepping foot into this establishment atre getting old. You ar right Artist Point as you know it is dead. It is dead because it could not sustain itself. That is sad, but it is the reality many restaurants experience, and when one dies, it is a Blessing if another can take it's place and thrive.

Storybook Dining is a character meal, but with a new outline. The food is good. The service is excellent. The characters are fun. WHen people ask what the experience is, perhaps you coudl add to the conversation by providing examples of the food you do not like and explain why it is not to your likening. Tell people what aspect of the character experience is so troubling, and discuss why the service suffers now that the experience has changed. Or maybe just pass by the thread if you cannot add to it other than insulting those who have been and do like it.

We really enjoyed it. We usually stay at the WL, so it was so convenient. I enjoyed my meal. The soup was good. My husband liked his main course as well - I got the seafood and he got the prime rib. The characters were really good. Like others said, the Snow White was amazing. Grumpy stays in character. I was in his way once and he just pushed passed me. It was very funny. My daughter loved it.

It was our favorite dining experience on our recent trip. Our server was excellent, the food was very good, and the character interaction was fantastic. Very good value on the DDP. We will definitely go again on our next trip.
