Extra person fee at Swan resort?

Booking through Marriott, a room with two queen beds at the Swan resort charges extra person fees of $300 for one adult and three children. The same room with one adult and one child, but still the same two queen beds, is $300 less for six nights. Why is this? Does anyone have experience with this added fee, or have any advice? I never remember paying extra person fees anywhere else for a room that accommodates 4 people just to have 4 in the room. My first thought was it must be resort fees, but that’s not it. The resort fee is nightly her room. They simply call this an extra person fee.

I believe it's customary to have extra fees per extra person above two. I remember booking a room for 3, with 2 queen beds, at a Marriott in Las Vegas and it was $25-35 more for the night for the third person (who ended up not coming after all) :P

It's pretty standard for resorts to charge a fee for each extra adult when there's more than 2. Never heard of it for children unless it was some sort of package like all inclusive, including theme park tickets, etc. Very strange. Might be worth a call for an explanation.

You should not be charged any extras for 1 adult and 3 children when the room accommodates 4 people. If it was 3 adults and 1 child, then they would charge you for the extra adult above the 2 adults that are permitted in the room for no extra fee. Hotels are getting so ridiculous with the extra fees for everything. It's ridiculous. I would definitely call Marriott.

Thanks for the feedback. Good to know I’m not the only one who thought this seemed a little off. If we book it, I will call to see if they can remove the fee.

This isn't the way it worked when the hotels were Starwood. As others have said, more than two adults would have incurred the charge...not extra kids. Hopefully this is a mistake, and not another Marriott "enhancement" to the Swan & Dolphin.

I once rented a cabin/house that slept 10 and had to pay extra $25 per person/night over 2! That was ridiculous to me.

Personally, I would want to know what this is exactly before I booked it.

Agree - we stay at S&D fairly often and I do have to pay an extra adult fee as my kids are over 18 but I can't figure out what that charge would be in your case. Did you price out 2 A 2 C just for comparison - ?

That's 50 a night extra which makes no sense since a cot is 25 and an extra adult is 35....

Unless its resort fees and taxes but that seems very high as well.

We just stayed at a Sheraton ( now owned by Marriott) and I complained bc online the booking fee increased with over 2 ppl but we were getting a family package.,
I simply called and they said put two adults and that they never charged for kids, but I’m sure had I booked and paid for the kids at the time they would have happily taken my money..
Seems like a scam
That said you can’t do that bc you certainly do t want to mess up your fast passes etc.. but it’s def worth a call
Good luck

I’ve noticed the same issue with Marriott when I book from the app. When I book from my computer, I can specify that person 3 & 4 are children and it doesn’t charge for them. Since the merger, the app and website don’t seem to align. I see different rates/packages which is very annoying!! It’s not just a S&D issue.

For reference the "Resort" fee is $28 before taxes and $31.50 after taxes at the Swan / Dolphin.

Update: I passed on Swan and kept my POP reservation because of this issue. We are booking two rooms. The room with 1 adult and 3 kids was going to cost an added $150 in extra person charges, on top of the nearly $200 in resort fees. Same for the room with two adults and two children. So all told, they wanted nearly $700 in resort fees and extra person charges for two rooms with two queen beds in each room (no cots, no “family packages” or add ons like breakfast, no children over 18). I wanted to book online to take advantage of Ebates, so calling to make the reservation wasn’t an option. Also, this was through the Marriott website, not the app.

Bottom line, Sheraton/Marriott missed out on a 12-night booking when they still have empty rooms in every room category, and we are happy and quite content with POP. It just wasn’t worth it to me to try and figure out that mess, and I wasn’t willing to just book it for two people per room and risk not being able to assign all 4 magic bands & tickets to each room.

Moral of this story for me: Sheraton/Marriott is using a new deceptive practice (resort fees and parking are also deceptive, but well-known tactics) to make the rate show up lower than it really is on search engines & travel sites. We leave Sunday! Thanks again, everyone.

Bit late on this thread but I wanted to add some valuable info. Staying at the Swan in August 2019, 2 adults 2 kids. The Marriott site does want to charge me the extra child fee of $25 per child per night. (Keep in mind the rate is only $125 so this represents a 20% premium per child!) Instead of paying this, I booked just the 2 adults with queen beds.

The next gotcha was when I linked it to the MDE it only syncs with 2 guests. This will become a problem once I get into the 60 day Fast Pass+ window. I called Marriott customer service and they said since the merger they have had this problem with some of their hotels and children on a reservation. She claimed Marriott will never charge for children. To rectify this situation she needed to call the Swan because she couldn't access the Disney MDE system. After 15 minutes she came back and said give it 2 days and the additional guests will be in the MDE. Big surprise here, it didn't work and now my hotel reservation was completely de-linked from the MDE.

Called Marriott again today, same story about not supposed to be charging for children at this hotel. This time instead of calling the Swan I asked if she can just add the 2 children to the Marriott reservation, this way when I re-link my hotel stay in the MDE it will show 4 people. After another 15-20 minutes and speaking with her supervisor they couldn't waive the fee in the system. Told me a trouble ticket has been attached to my account and she called the Swan to confirm they will remove the $250 extra person charges upon checkout.

So tomorrow once the Marriott reservation is visible to the MDE I will try this again. This time with the 4 guests. However, I do have a feeling I will be dealing with the front desk at checkout to fight getting these charges removed.

Not deceptive if known, but more to the point - resort and parking fees at these properties originated with Starwood, or even a previous owner.

If you call the swan directly they will update your reservation without the charges. Then ask them to resend to Disney. I keep it unlinked until all 4 show. It won’t show in the Marriott app but the swan can send you an updated email confirmation number. My current problem is Mde keeps dropping my reservation link

The problem is the Marriott System. We have found that if you just book the 2 adults via the Marriott system (online or Marriott call center) then call the Swan directly at 407-934-3000 ( ask for local reservations ). They can add the children to the reservation (no extra guest fee) and resend the reservation to Disney. It may take up to 24-48 hours to get the information in to the Disney reservation system to allow you to book FP+ reservations at the 60 day mark.

You can also use your Swan Confirmation number to link with in the MDE application once the reservation has been updated by the local on-site reservation agent at the Swan to include the children correctly.

Note: the extra guest fee should only be charged for any adults beyond 2 per room. This issue with Children be charged as "Extra Guests" began with the merger into the Marriott reservation system last year.

Disney now charges a parking fee as of March 2018 and it is not listed in the room rate. The resort fee has been round for at least 20 years and at some point I would expect Disney to add a resort fee just like they finally added a parking fee at the resorts.
