Magic Bands Upgrade

This is great ..
I wonder if they werent selling the speciality bands as much as they would like. I mean -- I would gather a lot of people get the free bands, show up on site and see the special ones and dont want to shell out $24.99 to replace something they already have on their wrist.

But being able to get them up front for a discount? Great sales tactic. I would have done this many trips ago.

I also think this will also encourage people to opt out of Magic Bands. I have gone on two trips (plus my AP bands) this year. I didnt need them .. but I got new bands each time. But if I would have gotten a fun speciality one the first time? I probably would have just stuck with the special ones for each trip and opted out.

Looking at the patterns, at least a few of them look like ones I've seen in the store before, so my guess is a combination of things:
- This are ones that they have seen sales slow for but they still have a bunch of
- Some people already have a bunch of the plain ones and have voiced mild complaints about wanting different options
- Get people to pay at least some $ for a MB vs a free one (I am sure these still cost way less than $10 to make) - and like you said, if you get a free one, less likely to pay for one later
- Market as another perk of staying on site vs the only way to get a patterned one is pay full price if you stay off site

I would be fine picking them up in the resort if I can still customize after my May 14 date. We already have bands in every color! Don’t need another :)
Same here. We plan the 1st day at resort anyway so I'd rather get a band I want at the resort. (Plus less chance of forgetting at home )

Wish Disney did it from the onset. Then I'd have chosen a Tangled-related MagicBand instead of the plan purple colour, which I deliberately chose to approximate Corona's national colours.

I did an online chat today asking about the new bands. CM says they don’t have an actual date for when the new magic band upgrade option would go into effect. We just booked on the 11th and have 1 more day to get them ordered for home delivery. I’m going to hold out and hope we can choose a different color or design at the discounted rate.

At $10 per band, we will do it if we find something we really like... but we have been using decals from Etsy for about that same price or less per band, including shipping, and there are tons more options. We have a trip in November so we’ll see what the options and prices are by then.

Unfortunately they will cost $14.99, which can make a difference when you have a bigger family.

We use puck holders on our Apple watches now but this will be nice for our grandchildren.

That's the only place it states $10.00 All other publication states that it will cost $14.99

You're reading it wrong. You get a $14.99 discount off the retail price. Most of the fancier Magic Bands are $24.99, which would make them $10 with the discount.

"These new MagicBand upgrade options will be available for pre-arrival purchase at a special price that reflects a $14.99 discount off the regular retail cost"

The article you included says this:

“These new MagicBand upgrade options will be available for pre-arrival purchase at a special price that reflects a $14.99 discount off the regular retail cost through the My Disney Experience website.”

The screen shot shows the retail cost of that band as $24.99. Subtract the $14.99 discount opted in the sentence above and the cost is $10.00. I’m sorry, but am I missing something?

Nope, you're not missing anything. Apparently I did not read ALL the words. Sorry for the confusion.
