Filthy Bathrooms!

I have never seen a totally disgusting bathroom at WDW but one time on our last trip in December, I had to go really really bad. I went in bathroom near the stroller parking in fantasy land and no toilet paper! none at all! I walked really fast to Friar's nook and grabbed a ton of napkins and headed back. :o

On our 2nd trip (December 2017), we encountered many disgusting bathrooms. It really does happen for those who are in disbelief. I think they were just short staffed that week because we encountered several other issues on that trip as well.

We went back in November 2018, and I don’t think I ever encountered a dirty bathroom. There were almost always CMs in there cleaning and working hard to maintain them. We experienced none of the other issues as well. I am guessing staff levels were better on that trip.

You mean no one could spare a square? Sorry, couldn’t resist......

We were there last week and I did notice that the Rapunzel bathroom at MK was pretty gross every time we went there. Clogged toilets, paper all over the floor, feces on toilets, blood on the wall, etc. Maybe it's the high volume of people constantly using that bathroom?

And at the same time, we visited a lot of other bathrooms countless times and I don't remember any other bathroom being filthy. Most were actually very clean.

Ugh. What kind of person leaves blood on the walls and feces in the toilet? DISGUSTING. DISGUSTING. DISGUSTING. There is no excuse for that.

It's shameful that people are so gross it would require a full-time bathroom attendant. I agree that Disney (unfortunately) needs to do a better job at this, although luckily I've never encountered it.
:crazy2:

I've never seen it either, but there are plenty of things in this world that I have not seen, but that still exist or happen. :)

I go to Disney about 4/5 times a year for about roughly 25 days a year for the last 6 years on a consistent basis...and pee regularly too.

All I’m saying is that out of all the bathrooms I’ve been too I’ve never though it was ever absolutely disgusting.

Lucky you.

I've seen some that were just a horror show...and many that were just fine.

I honestly do not believe that this is an issue, I have yet to see a restroom at WDW that is in such horrid condition as described by some of the above posters, also, as one who works in the hospitality industry and manages large operations, anyone that understands this sector knows that it is practically IMPOSSIBLE for every single restroom to be perfect at all times, guest volumes at WDW continue to increase and with that comes higher restroom usage, you could have all the staff in the world and things will still fall through the cracks, it's the nature of running an enormous operation at the busiest theme park resort in the WORLD.. And please do not compare WDW to smaller park operations such as SeaWorld because that is just flat out silly, it's apples to oranges..

On my last couple trips to DL and WDW, I have taken note of bathroom condition (after hearing rants on the podcast and posts on the forums) - and I have to say, I have generally found them to be in pretty good shape. That is not to discount anyone's bad experiences, because I am sure that the bathrooms are foul from time to time, but I wonder if that is more the exception than the rule? Maybe I am just lucky! :)

100% agree!

Bottom line, for $100.00 plus per day and $4 for a Coke, etc. The bathrooms should be spotless.
You make a good point, but as long as there are guests who feel that it is the park's responsibility to clean up after THEM, you're going to have some dirty bathrooms. I haven't been to Tokyo yet, but I would bet you that they spend 1/3 of the time cleaning their bathrooms and yet I am sure they are still spotless...buying a $100 ticket and a $4 coke doesn't give guests the right to toss dirty diapers on the floor, or not flush a toilet, or throw paper towels on the ground. Guests have to assume some responsibility as well IMO.

Absolutely! I agree 100%. And in no way should anything I've said on this topic excuse bad guest behavior.

However, here's where the problem comes in. When a place is clean, people are more likely to try and keep it that way. When a place is dirty, people are less likely to care. So when someone goes into the bathroom and it's spotless, they'll be a little more careful. But when the trashcans are overflowing and there's trash on the floor, the floor is dirty, the stalls are dirty, etc., people are more likely to just toss their stuff wherever. Again, I'm not saying that mindset is right because it isn't, but I can kind of understand how that happens.

This guy gets it. The logistics with the growing crowd levels is impossible to keep up with. You’re going to see some toilet paper on the floor at one point or another.

To the poster that said blood on the walls? Well yeah, that’s weird, but just like some of you all have said “just because you haven’t seen it doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen” I’ll reverse that and say “just because you’ve seen it once doesn’t mean anyone else has or that it’s a normal occurrence”.

I love the idealism here but it’s still a theme park that accommodates tens of thousands of guests a day... yea Disney is a bubble but it’s still on planet earth.

Unfortunatley for people who go to WDW in the present, Walt and Roy set the bar very high. And before corporate greed came into play they were able to meet that very high goal and keep the standards they set for themselves. That is no longer the case, please see Abagail Disney's recent posts about the corporate greed that keeps employee salaries very low and park staffing to the barest minimum in order to maximize corporate (not really because a larger percentage goes to the execs than to the share holders) profits. Bottem line the smaller the staff the more that things like cleanliness are going to overlooked.

That's a huge problem, though. I've said before, Disney has become a victim of their own success. They built a brand known worldwide for top-notch customer service and guest experience and it seems more and more that they either can't or don't care about maintaining that anymore. It's not just about dirty bathrooms. It's also cast members having inappropriate conversations onstage, poor service in restaurants, a website and app that are barely functional, etc. Disney used to be the gold standard. Other companies used to send their employees to Disney for training. If I owned a company today, Disney is no longer the model I'd want to follow. Yes they're wildly successful but do you think they would be if they were just starting out today the way they are now? Maybe, but I think it would be a more uphill battle.

No, the conditions you described have nothing to do with crowd levels but rather with some people being absolute pigs.

That’s a fair point. I would say a lot of their staff is still top notch though. There are some bad eggs, but I think the Disney model is still a great practice for customer service positions. I won’t talk about their technology or management decisions though, as I think the app is atrocious (it’s gotten a little better after the last update but it’s still pretty terrible) and poor decisions occur way too often.

I just got back from a week in the 'World, and while I didn't encounter any disgusting bathrooms, I would say virtually every time I was in one, it was at least somewhat less than clean - a few paper towels on the floor, perhaps - puddles of something here or there. I would say they were all roughly on par with what you'd expect running into a random McDonald's anywhere in the US.

So I agree with other posters who have suggested that an above-average cleanliness should be expected for the price of a WDW experience.

I don't know the exact numbers, but I'll ballpark about 20 restroom areas in the Magic Kingdom. If, during peak times of the year, you hired staff to maintain at least one person for each bathroom area, 15 hours a day, at $20/hr cost to Disney (all numbers rough guesses), that's still only $6,000 a day. If you consider there are probably an extra 10,000 people visiting during these times, that's a cost to Disney of less than a dollar per person to have the bathrooms well maintained.

If you’re counting behind the scenes as well, which you need to be, 20 bathrooms in MK is a gross under exaggeration. Double that, at least. Then add in the rest of the bathrooms on property to that count as well, because Disney maintains all of them. Math gets a little more difficult.
