Hello! I am cruising on a ship for the first time in May on RCL (Navigator of the Seas), and thought some of yous might know more about Nassau?

We stop at Nassau, and we do not plan on doing any excursions. So we thought we might visit the straw market and Queens Staircase, and possibly the Ardastra Gardens as well as walk on some of the beaches near the port terminal.

My basic question is, is Nassau safe to walk around if we stay in the area I described above? Is it a total fools errand? Any activities you all might recommend?

We are looking for quick, casual, fun in the sun, so nothing fancy!

I didn't walk as far as Ardastra Gardens or the Queen's staircase. But we did walk to Junkanoo Beach passing the straw market along the way and never felt unsafe.

Junkanoo isn’t that far - maybe 15 minutes, on the other side of the colonial Hilton. Probably just outside of the tourist zone but doesn’t seem unsafe.

Straw market and Junkaroo beach is not a very far or hard walk like others have mentioned. Pretty safe in my opinion but there will be hawkers at junkaroo beach.

Walking to queens staircase is doable but it is uphill going there. Maybe a 30-45 minute walk to get there.

I appreciate everyones feedback! We can do the walk very easily.

My only other Caribbean experience is St. Lucia (I visited twice when my father lived and work there), and my sister has been to the Bahamas several times. I think I was a little nervous because Castries (the port in St. Lucia) is an absolute horror.

Hawkers we can handle. Looks like its easy enough to put a great day together!

St. Lucia port area is not developed like Nassau. Also the roads to the Pitons are scary! Though I am going back to Diamond falls to soak in the springs in a few weeks. Have to brave those roads to get there. I was going to ride a boat or catamaran to the pitons and just take a cab up to the springs. Alas have not found an operator that does this within the time we are in port.

Luckily my father had this new massive truck and warned me well in advance about the roads. The no guard rail thing freaked me out. Those roads are quite the thrill!

My son (11) and I walked to Junkanoo and then up to Queen's Staircase. From there we walked up to Fort Fincastle. Great views. Bring lots of water.
We never felt like we were in danger at any time. Many people were walking around.

Oh good! We'll def make sure to hydrate!

Queens Staircase isn't that far. Maybe 15 minutes once in town...just have your walking route planned out mentally -- its not well marked with street signs. It is pretty safe, but be a little careful walking as the roads are narrow, driving is done on the left side of the road and some of the sidewalks are either gone or in pretty bad shape.
