The DisFort's Chit Chat Cafe

Last weekend before our Florida trip. We are packing and getting the Ram & TT ready for travel.

Now Denise, if I recall correctly from the years on this board, you and Frank typically first head to the north Florida/Georgia coast somewhere to camp and let Frank catch a few fish. Then after New Years at some point, you migrate down to the Fort. Is that the general plan this year too or have you thrown in a new angle?

Or are you going to make us wait for it to come out "drip-drip-drip"?

I wouldn't want to play poker with you, girl. I would lose terribly. You appear to be playing your cards close to the vest. I'm only willing to lose as many poker chips as tiggerdad is going to grub stake me for.

New tires done <check>. Bearings were checked and still smooth and tight.

Pretty ready to go mechanically speaking.

Starting to look at the weather forecast for central Florida at the end of the month (I know, I know, don't bet the house now on what it says today for then). But still, shows highs in the upper 60s.

Tick tock. :hourglass

Have a great trip. We hope the weather is great. Bill & Barb

Simply because it deals with the Fort. Just a You Tube video that discusses the old FW Railroad.

I like that plan for a hotel better than the Deluxe that is planned. Would look better and fit in better.

What “brand” of tires did you get? Going to get new set myself this spring....one of local places said they had Goodyear’s for the $170-something range installed and then they said they had another brand manufactured China for somwhere around the $120 range installed. The tires I have now are brand manufactured China. I made only 2 long trips to FL in their 5 years....otherwise 2 hour or less trips, so extreme mileage not been in play. I will be making a FL round trip after the new shoes. All are invited to give tire opinion.

4077/Jimmy,

IIRC the brand is "Carlisle". I put myself in the hands of my tire/oil change/light repair Goodyear tire store. The guy who owns it has been taking care of me and my family (and the fleet of 5 cars and a popup) for nearly 25 years now and he has my trust. I go in and say, "Matthew, I need 3 tires for my camper next week" and go with what he recommends (on the cars he usually gives me a choice/option).

These are 13-in tires (on the smaller side) and from his comments there weren't a great deal of choices. I paid $250 for all balanced and mounted. And they are radials of course. Matthew doesn't have a camper but he hunts and fishes (pulls a bass boat) so he gets the whole trailer tire/axle thing - plus he's a car guy (duh, ed).

PS - if you want the exact tire, I'll go out to the garage and write it down no problem.

PPS - looking at the picture of your TV and camper in your sig, Jimmy, I see a double axle. That's 4 tires (plus a spare) for those prices you quoted above? Is that an "each tire" or "total" price?

Jimmy,

Goodyear has a newer trailer tire out, the Endurance. This replaced the Marathon. Marathons used to be the "go to" trailer tire, but something changed 5-10 years ago and they started having issues. Sounds like Goodyear couldn't beat the poor reputation, so they came out with a new one. My "tire guy" sells them, but said they haven't been on the market long enough to say how they perform. The handful he has sold haven't come back, but that isn't a ringing endorsement. I have had Ed's Carlyles on prior trailers and they ran good for the price.

I just replaced all my tires after a blow out on the way home from our Fort/GSP trip in September. I went up to Load range G tires due to the trailer weight. That would be serious overkill for your trailer.

I haven't run them before, but several race friends we running Maxxis trailer tires and had good luck.

What size are you looking at? That makes a difference in what is available.

Check out the Maxxis 8008 ST. Depending on size, it looks like they are around $100 each on the 'nets.

I knew it was bound to happen. Ian checked off 2 "firsts" today. His first ticket and first wreck. The ticket was "failure to reduce speed". I told him he should fight it. He did reduce speed, it just wasn't until he hit the car in front of him. :D

He (and everyone else) is OK. And that's the important part. His Miata is probably totaled. Air bags, antifreeze and plastic parts scattered about. Details are typical of a new driver. Looking where he shouldn't, following a bit too close and not expecting someone to stop for no reason. Learning experience and just glad everyone is fine.

He has been trying to sell the Miata so he could get a newer one with a retractable hard top. Looks like he may be selling it to the insurance company.

That is per tire price....

Mine are 14” tires and load range C. Like you, I am not a tire expert, but was just curious about the brand you ended up with and if it was for any particular reason....

In your case, because you have a long time guy you trust to give you what you need! But that is as good an endorsement as any!

Thanks for the input....I will look into these options...

@Teamubr glad to hear everyone is ok. That Miata is so cute, tell Ian when I was 20 that was the car I wanted, convertible and all but red of course.

Glad he's okay.

Didn't think a Mistake could be any smaller...

He can fight the failure to reduce speed. Unless somebody clocked him they can't prove it.

Again, glad the kids okay
