I am nearly a hippie with personal care. My daughter has an artistic soul and loves to experiment. She is starting to get interested in personal care products and make up. I want to have products as clean as possible while allowing her some freedom of choice. Lush was fun but many of the products cause reactions in one or the other of us. I was thinking of picking up some small items for christmas and giving her a gift card to Sephora to explore with me. We don't have a Whole Foods or a Body Shop locally or i would choose those. Does Sephora make sense? Any other thoughts? FYI make up is for home and play only, she is not allowed to wear make up out yet.

Sephora can be great fun but almost overwhelming in the amount of choices offered. If you are focused only on clean cosmetics/personal care items you will probably have to research brands/products ahead of time to steer her to the right sections. One option might be to make up a coupon for 2 bottles of nail polish in your preferred brand from Sephora, that way she can pick the colors but you picked the products.

Target has a new line of fragrances based on essential oils. Burt's Bees has some lightly tinted lip products. I'm just trying to come up with the 2018 equivalent of the lipsmackers, love's baby soft and peel off nail polish I was using at 10 yrs old.

as far as makeup i'll share a tip that has saved my crazy sensitive skin from many a mishap (and saved me lots of money on makeup remover/skin cleansing products). i learned it when i was doing theatre and had to apply thick makeup but it works just as well for the normal day to day stuff-before applying makeup to your face wash with COLD water. you can splash it on or as i prefer-get a washcloth wet with water as cold as you can stand.

reasoning? the cold will close the pores in your face so (1) if you have a reaction to a product it won't be as severe b/c it won't seep in as deeply, and (2) b/c the pores are closed the makeup is easily removed without needing special cleaning products or astringents. if she starts this habit when she starts playing around with makeup it will become second nature to her and her skin will benefit.

If you want to experiment maybe get her an Ipsy or Birchbox subscription. It is $10 a month (cancel anytime) and you get 4 or 5 products to try. Birchbox has morehigh-endd samples and Ipsy has more full size products but the full size tend to be drugstore.

I would skip Sephora and do Ulta instead for a gift card as her $ will go further there. However I would check Sephora’s website as they host classes! Most of them Free! On how to do a specific makeup (lips, eyes, nude, etc) each store has a different schedule so if you have a few in your area check them all.

Thank you for all of your suggestions. I wondered about Ulta. Our store looks very small but it might be more appropriate. Birchbox sounds cool too, i will check it out.

What about a book for personal care stuff that gives her recipes of things she can make herself? My DD started with the American Girl book The Care of You, and from there found similar books. She makes sugar scrubs, coffee ground scrubs, all kinds of hair and skin products. We keep her stocked with avocado, coconut oil and Sugar in the Raw and she mixes up fun stuff.

I love the idea of building a manicure set for her, and Sephora classes are great at teaching how to use products. The pressure to buy isn't terrible and they have taught my girls early on how to put on makeup in a natural and pretty way. And if her skin is delicate - I encourage not to skimp on the products that go on her skin. My girls can wear Bare Minerals, and a couple others but the rest cause them skin issues and created more problems than the savings was worth. Plus around holiday time there will be deals to be found even on the more expensive stuff!
