Christmas idea for retired...

My husband retired. I am a stay at home mom. We have 5 kids, but only the last 2 are home and in grade school (6th grade). I love having my husband home...no issues there. The thing is, especially with our long winter, we can't spend our days sitting on the couch. We are foodies....but going out to eat isn't the solution (at least not daily). I'm afraid that we aren't active. My husband had both knees replaced this past year, so physically hard activity is still not quite in the cards. I'm hoping to come up with some Christmas ideas that will encourage him (and us) to do something. Unfortunately, I'm not sure what....lol. My husband was a golfer and would love to be one again with new knees. So one of my ideas is gift cards for an indoor range. I would love some other ideas though.

Thanks...
Jess

Have you considered tickets to some type of concert or play? Maybe Broadway, if you are anywhere near NYC?

Oh we'd both love that. I should have been a little more specific though... I need something that we can do around town, during the day while the littlest 2 are in school. We end up spending too much time sitting around and I know that will only get worse as the weather turns.

We are in Western NY. Lots of good theater here too....but about 6 1/2 hrs from NYC. Just in case our location helps others with ideas.

Thanks...

oOOoOoOOoOOOOh.

Ok. How about a nice walk a couple of times a day? ;)

Retired golfer with new knees-I know some of those. DH wants a discount card for the Robert Trent Jones Trail. "Bag Buddy" golf cart puller?

Seek out a gym where you can swim. Keeps you moving without lots of stress on your joints.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Get him something that will encourage him to build good health, like a gym membership. Our gym has a ton of water classes and there's always lap lanes open.

ETA: My gym is a silver sneakers & silver & fit participant. Maybe look for gyms that are senior friendly instead of ones that cater to a younger population.

Do you have a TopGolf nearby you? I know they have membership packages and leagues, some of which are geared toward retirees (e.g. mid-day during the week).

Thanks all....

I looked up TopGolf...nearest is 188 miles away. We do have a couple golf domes so I can (probably will) get a gift card for that.

We have a family gym membership. It's really not either of our things (especially coming off his knees and my back injury). We keep the membership because 2 of our kids play college softball and need the gym to condition when home. My husband also 'works out' at PT these days as his knees recover. We tried going up there to walk at the gym but he can't walk fast and it almost pains me to walk his speed. I know we will need to do more of this as time goes on, but I can't say that I'm looking forward to it.

I'm going to look into cooking but a lot of those types of classes take place in the evening or weekends. Our free time is weekday afternoons.

What about a membership to a local museum?or zoo? bowling league? book club? volunteer for meals on wheels or a food bank, volunteer at kids school or animal shelter

What about a something of the month club? It won’t necessarily get you out of the house, but it will get you cooking together and at least that’s something?

I definitely think volunteering together to do meals on wheels would be fun. I would sign up for one of those home delivery meal kit things for two people and use that to once or twice a week prepare a lunch together just the two of you, it will give you a chance to explore new foods and new recipes and the prices for two is much cheaper than the price for 4!

A few thoughts.

The gym is a great idea, if you have a Y check with them as beyond just swimming they often have some aquatic exercise programs that are great for joint stress and working out. The water buoyancy really helps in a lot of cases as it keeps some of the weight from a full impact.

You are both Foodies, so maybe find a cooking class. Community college or Rec department.

That's a great idea!!! Meals on Wheels is a great way to get out and about, make new friends, see new parts of your town, and get all the wonderful benefits of volunteering. It's a great thing to do as a team--one of you can drive and the other can be the navigator and "runner" who brings the food to the door. It usually only takes about an hour and most local organizations are pretty flexible.

I don't know if it is possible for you to get someone to watch your younger kids, but if it were me I'd plan a long weekend getaway together. A drive up the New England coast and stay in a bed and breakfast for a couple nights and visit some quaint town during the day, especially one that goes all out during the holiday season. Weather permitting LOL
