I am usually 100% against artists putting their own spin on the National Anthem, any National Anthem. This, though, I will make an exception for. It’s not even my Anthem and it almost choked me up. To me, it puts a whole new spin on the lyrics.

Australian here so not my anthem either but since we adore Hawaii enough to visit twice a year that rendition gave me goosebumps too!

I liked it, I dont mind at al if people put there slant on it, as long as its done with a love for the Country and not trying to take little stabs, trying to push there political views

No snark, serious question..do you know the Canadian Anthem well enough to know when it’s being done wrong?

I was only asking because I present to you the absolute WORST rendition of any anthem anywhere in the world. Note that at one point it sounds like O Christmas tree..

Okay I do know it well enough, some Canadians actually play hockey here in Boston:rotfl2::rotfl2:

And yes that was awful!!

I kinda like the way Rene Rancourt di his rendition

Mahalo for sharing this.

As Lowkey stated, we are all different, so hearing it and the feeling he put into it and how it made me feel while he sang our Anthem is what counts... and I thought it was really beautiful.

I enjoy hearing different versions... as long as I can understand the words, and that they sing the correct words.... not all that hollering and screaming and straining of the vocal chords that some singers try to do, that really aggravates me when they slaughter the song. I can't tell you how many times we have been a event the singer does not know the words to the Star Spangled Banner. The crowd is singing the right words and the person with the mic has no idea... which to me is the bigger issue, than someone singing his or her own style.

His version isn’t bad. We’ve changed the words since then and I don’t like it. Most people still sing it this way.

It’s funny, every time I hear an anthem at a game I always listen for the TRUE NORTH and was surprised I didn’t hear it in that version. Then I remembered we aren’t playing in that game so no fans in the stands lol

Unfortunately Rene retired after 42 years:eek:

His replacement is gonna do just fine:

It was right after the Ottawa attacks in 2014 so it was to honor that.

I hadn't realized before now that the words were changed from "thy sons." "True North" is still in it though, right? It sounds like he's saying, "The true and strong and free."

I learned "O Canada" in school in 8th Grade (in MI). We learned it with "thy sons" and "True North," and that the T and N are always capitalized.

The anthem was changed from all thy sons to all of us..it just sounds wrong.

Good ear, he does say true and strong and free and no, that part hasn’t been changed. That guy was just awful. He had the sheet music in front of him so he had clearly never heard it before. Is it even possible that someone wouldn’t have heard it? I get that people in Egypt might not know it, but our closest neighbour?

Sadly, many people within their own country don't know the lyrics and melody to their own National Anthem. I've seen it so many times with Americans screwing up the Star Spangled Banner that it really doesn't surprise me, but it still always drives me crazy... Screwing up the lyrics especially. I don't mind when some people take artistic liberty with the melody if they do it tastefully, like in the original post, but most people just really suck at it.

And for the "of us" change, I'll keep my opinions on the reason for the change to myself, but I liked the former version better too.
