Midwest Dismeet 2018

We also utilize Verizon, and the cell service has always been good. The trees sometimes block satellite reception and local tv reception. Yes, a cool down and less humidity will be welcome for us as well. See everyone on Friday.

Thanks Barb,

Friday looks rainy, but we should be leaving in the morning and be there by early afternoon.

Drive safe. We are heading down tomorrow for just an extra day. So I will have raked, etc!!!! Not much in the way of groceries except at a gas station. Either south about ten miles, or north to either savannah or a bit further, Galena. N

Hello all! We did get some rain here at our farm last night. Not enough though. It rained him out of one field, but still able to get others. He's currently spraying :(

Little bit of rain, that's just like Florida. I could bring an industrial fan and we could maybe blow it away :confused3

We are leaving late morning today. Will do our best to blow away the rain and mosquitoes. See everyone tomorrow. Barb & Bill

It is raining here this morning. Daniel says the wheat is ready and the combine is not. He's off to go work on getting that ready. Wheat/Straw are a huge part of our livelihood and it just takes priority. Unfortunately, that's our life in the summertime. Work. Work. Work. No fun. No fun at all...

Nothing I can do and I'm sorry to miss out on the meet.

For all those in route and /or attending here to calm seas an fair winds all the way there and for the duration. Don't forget some of us don't read so good so PICTURES lots and lots of Pictures

We understand. Just disappointed. I missed the GSP DIS Meet due to work. Sometimes life gets in the way.

On a side note. Are you just cutting winter wheat or is this a spring crop? The only wheat fields down here are spring wheat, but they aren't near ready.

j

Winter wheat. The real work comes right after they combine the wheat and that's bailing the straw. Last year he bailed around 7,000 square bales. No idea what this year will bring. Then after that he plants beans in the same field.

It never ends in the summer for him...or the spring...or the fall..sigh.

Mellissa, we will miss you, but I do understand. We are here, site 121,oops, site 122. Somebody did not read their tags right, and it was their site for last year!!!! Nobody in site 122 tonight, and we will move to the 121 tomorrow. Although we like 122. No rain here today, but when we set up we’re attacked by mosquitoes. But just got back from walk and not bad. Drive safe tomorrow. The Schillings

No rush Barb, but I'm supposed to be on 122. I plan getting there between 12 and 1.

Melissa,
7000 squares is impressive. Hopefully the trade games don't impact your beans too much. All the fields down here really good. Beans are well over a foot and corn is 4-5 feet. Considering the cold wet spring we had, it is doing well.

We'll being heading out about 9am (stupid job) and should be there about 11:30. Gonna hit the grocery store before we leave, if anybody needs anything.

Glad you made it in safe, Barb. Safe travels, Jim & Joe.

Hope you all have a nice visit. Wishing good thoughts and weather your way. You"ll all be on my mind this weekend. Have fun!

Well, I believe I speak for all involved that the Midwest Dismeet was an overall success. It rained some on Friday morning. OK it rained a lot on Friday morning, but that didn't stop us.
Saturday the park rangers came by and pumped out the excess water from the sites.
Barb and Bill (bjschil) were gracious enough to let us hang out in the back of their toy hauler (very spacious).
Glenda and I played a lively game of cards and marbles with them (not sure of the name), and then Jim and Donna & Ian (teamubr), joined us for game of Mexican Train Dominoes.
Saturday evening we had a potluck dinner, needless to say no one left hungry.
It was a wonderful time, and so glad we finally got to put faces with names and meet the people I had been talking to on the Dis for so long.
We are also kicking around the idea of a late September/October Midwest Dismeet possibly somewhere downstate Illinois.
Thomson Causeway is wonderful small campground right on the Mississippi river, not expensive with nice sites and beautiful views.
If there is any possibility of working around our kids schedule, my wife is very excited about Gulf Shores for 2019. Leave it to my Dis Friends to get her hooked.20180623_183049-1209x1612 (1)thomson 1.jpg 20180623_183053-1209x1612 thomson 2.jpg 20180623_203333-1612x1209 (1)thomson sunset.jpg 20180624_111117-1209x1612 picnic.jpg

Joe and Jim, we had a wonderful time, putting names to faces, and like Joe said, some fun filled laughter, during board games. The damp Saturday did not stop us from enjoying great company. Our shared meal was great, and the late bonfire was filled with talk, laughter, and just great conversation. Looking forward to meeting up again. MeIssa, we missed you, but as a farmer, like yourselves, we DO understand that down days do not make for getaway time. There is ALWAYS something that needs repairing. Have a great summer.

Thanks for sharing on the trip. I have checked on this thread a 100 times since Friday. Curious and jealous both. Bummed we couldn't make it, but also having to remind myself how much time hubby has for us during the winter and two plus weeks he allots for Disney each year. Glad to see everyone had a good time.

Hopefully next year we can join in.

We are booked Jan 6 - Jan 20 or 21st (not sure last day) at Fort Wilderness.

Thanks everyone for jumping in and giving an update. We got home about 5:30 (stopped for dinner/late lunch) and then jumped into unpacking, work and grading projects.

I'll echo Barb and Joe's comments. We had a great time. It felt like old friends getting together for a visit. The campground was fantastic. Nice paved sites. Very well kept area and camping a few feet from the Mighty Mississippi. We definitely have it on our return list.

We arrived about 1 pm on Friday. Barb and Bill had arrived the day before and kept my site warm overnight... literally. Someone had inadvertently parked in their site on Thursday. They moved over a spot just before we arrived. That must have had some effect on the rain since it stopped about the same time and held off the rest of the evening. Here's a pic of the the inaugural Midwest DIS Meet.

Left to right- Joe and Glenda (tigger92662), Bill and Barb (bjschil) and Donna, Ian (in pic) and I.

Besides the hospitality, the view right across from our sites was great. The campground is a few miles upstream of the Fulton lock and dam. This makes the Mississippi very wide for this far north, but the views are spectacular.

Donna, Ian and I took a side trip Saturday morning and ran down to LeClaire, IA, home to Ancient Archaeology, better known as the home of American Pickers. We watch this show often and had to run down to see what their store was like. They had some neat artifacts highlighted on the show. No sign of Mike, Frank or Danielle.

Saturday was beautiful. Clear skies and low 80s. Great weather to site outside on Barb and Bille's patio deck on the back of their new toy hauler. Card games and dominoes broke out. It was the perfect setting to visit, get to know each other better and talk Disney.

I didn't realize until I got home that you can't see Barb in the pics. She is sitting on the far left, behind Donna and Ian. On the right is Joe (tigger92662), his lovely DW, Glenda and Bill (bjschil DH) in the Packers chair.

We finished off the evening with pot luck dinner (which was great) and a nice bonfire. We kept the Disney talk going until after midnight when most of us "old people" remembered it was way past our bed time. Sunday morning (Barb's birthday) was another wonderful day, but sadly, we all had to pack up and head back to reality.

I want to thank Joe and Barb for suggesting this and pulling the details together. We are already planning another get together later this Fall, somewhere a little more central in Illinois. I'll start checking out places mid-state and select a weekend. Joe and I are heading to the Fort in September, but early October should still be great weather wise. Everyone is welcome! Melissa, let me know harvest season and we will try to pick a time and place you can join us.
