Question about tickets, phones, and MaxPass

Hi guys,

I'll be going to Disneyland with my husband one week from today and I haven't bought our tickets yet. Last year I bought them online and had them mailed to me, but this year I kind of forgot?

So I'm wondering, should I buy them now online or wait until I get there to buy them? And if I do buy them online, how does that work, I've read they just scan them from your phone. So would both tickets be on my phone? And I'm planning on getting MaxPass, but that just goes through the app right? We don't both need the app to use it, do we?

Sorry for all of the questions, I'm used to WDW, Disneyland is confusing lol!

I have an AP now and it has been a couple years since I bought a park ticket. Well before MaxPass. I expect someone will hop in here with a definite answer on any updated procedures.

In the past it was easy to just to buy the tickets off the DLR website and, when you did so, they were often cheaper than at the gate. You could just print up hard copies and take them right to the turnstiles. Once there they would exchange them for a paper ticket and take your photo to put it into their system and associated with your park ticket. Something like that has to be the case today because folks still use paper tickets for things like traditional paper FastPasses.

I suspect once you buy the tickets online you can enter those ticket numbers into the DLR app and they will be there and use for MaxPass.

If you get MaxPass you will of course need the app to select FPs. At that point you can either use your app for "using" or redeeming the FP or use the paper ticket they issue. Frankly the app is easier to use. I found myself always using the app for FP redemption. No need to fish out my AP. It is there on my phone.

Can you get a discount if you buy them online?
Both of you can be on the same APP. I went with a family member and both of us were on the same APP and it worked quite well. Then, I went with a friend and we each had our own APP. Sometimes one of us would look at the return times and propose going on a particular ride. The second person would look 2 or 3 mins later and the return times were too far out of sync, so the first person would have to go back and refresh the options again so that we could ride in the same return window time.
OTOH, when the family member (who was on the same APP and who had a park hopper with valid days left) was not with me, I kept getting a prompt to add MaxPass for him when making the fast pass selections for myself. (It was my first time using MaxPass, so maybe there is a way to suppress that feature? )

I bought lmt tickets and I plan on upgrading to deluxe annual passes when we get there with MaxPass. If I put the tickets into the app and name them all, would I have to do it again when we upgraded or would it all automatically update? I’m trying to decide if it’s even worth messing with app before we upgrade.

You’ll have to readd the APs but the name will automatically load since it’s attached to the AP.

I would avoid buying tickets at the gate, unless you plan on going later in the day when the ticket lines are relatively short. Even when the ticket lines look short, it take a bit of time. I waited as next in line for about 20-25 min last time I was there. Buy them online and add the maxpass at the same time. Its worth avoiding the hassle.

I would buy your tickets at Last Minute Travel online (can find a code to join for free or just call them). They will email you your ticket. I printed ours out and scanned them to my app (I will take our paper copies that first day just because) and already have them named. We're all set to go straight to the gate and add MP once we're in. I will have the app on my phone and may have the two 16 yo put it on their phones (using my account) so that I don't have to be the only one getting MPs.

Sometimes it takes 6 days for LMT to email your tickets. I would call them just to make sure they'll email them in time. Others have gotten them emailed w/in an hour.

Thanks everyone. Going to buy my tickets online today, I guess I'll just print them out because getting them directly on my phone makes me nervous, what if my phone happens to have an issue that day or something? :rotfl:So when I print out my tickets (I know they're not the actual tickets that I print, just calling them that) I don't have to go to a ticket booth to redeem them for actual tickets, I can just get right in line and do it there right?

Yes, that is correct.

I added mine to my phone but have my printed copies to take that first day (just in case!). Once we have our actual paper tickets each person will carry that in their lanyard and I will have them all on my phone also.

I purchased my tickets online from Disney and as I already had a Disney account they appeared automatically in the app. I'm sure you could link those purchased from 3rd parties manually.

On our park day I took both the printed version and the phone (just as well, the app short cut on my phone died that day, of all days and it took a while to work out what was wrong with it!), at the gate (no need to go to booth first) they took the print out and replaced them with physical tickets that we put into clear pockets on a lanyard. These tickets were automatically linked to my account (not sure if they were the same number as the print versions, I was too rattled by my app issue to pay that much attention at the gate) and once I'd worked out my app issues I was able to purchase max pass while in line for Space Mountain and it all worked like a charm for the rest of the day.
