SHADES OF GREEN at Walt Disney World Resort Information & Questions

What does everyone usually tip for the Shady Shuttle to the end of the drive to walk to the Polynesian? Also, I have an extra room booked for a friend that is traveling with us. Will she be able to pay the remainder of her balance on her room when we arrive or will I need to pay it & have her pay me back?

Following....considering a stay here as my husband is DoD. We have never stayed here before and I'm trying to figure out if it's right for us.

Yes, your guest will be asked for a credit card when they check in.

You will receive information on how to buy tickets about 50 days before your stay. The sponsor needs to complete and sign the top section. You can fill in the bottom section with your guest's information which will include name, last four digits of their credit card and a phone number and time when they can be reached. SOG will call them to confirm the order and obtain the rest of the credit card information. That way you will not have to pay for their tickets.

We are DoD and always did Disney moderates. We just tried Shades for the first time this past spring and we absolutely LOVED it. It's comparable to a Disney deluxe. Happy to answer any questions you might have.

Mainly due to the fact that it was a Disney deluxe (Disney Inn) in the past before DoD bought it. We used to stay at the Disney Inn when I was a kid and then was thrilled to find out DoD bought it and we could stay there since my dad is retired military. This hotel has some of, if not, the largest sized rooms on property.

I wasn't quite sure about this tip either, but we decided on a $5.00 tip for a one way trip on the Shady Shuttle.

Totally agree. We love SOG, and it is so wonderful to come back to such a relaxing resort after a busy day in the parks.
Whenever we've sponsored others they never stop talking about SOG, and they always want to return.

Yes and the surroundings and grounds are absolutely gorgeous! Just stunning and so well taken care of. The rooms are spacious and bright and love the balconies/patios. Wildlife everywhere-we saw turkey, peacocks, deer.....Everyone is incredibly polite at Shades of Green. Seriously, the bus rides are so lovely in comparison to the packed in, standing room only Disney buses. Shades buses are on a schedule and you know exactly what time the bus is coming.

What is the easiest/cheapest way to get back and forth between the airport and hotel? It will just be 2 adults, so no need to rent a car. Thanks!

The one time we flew (1998) we used a towncar service. They were there at the airport when we arrived and picked us up at SOG when they said they would. Just google car services and check reviews. We've taken take the Auto Train the rest of our trips so have our car with us.

We rented a car because it actually turned out to be less than a town car service. It was nice to have to stop and get water and snacks at the grocery store. We also drove to eat at other resorts and did some sightseeing outside of Disney as well. So check into car rental pricing as well. It is $7 per night to park at Shades-they have a very convenient covered parking garage.
The website Disneymilitarytips offers info on other ways to get to Shades from the airport including a discount code. Also Shades recommends a shuttle service on their website.

Hi there everyone! I will be heading to SOG with my mom in early August. We are both morning people and plan to make use of the morning EMH on most days we are there.

Is it possible to quickly eat at the breakfast buffet and catch the 7:30 bus? I figure fueling up before heading into the park would make a big difference, but I have no idea if it's feasible. Any feedback is much appreciated! Thank you.

The buffet opens at 7. If the park opens at 8, the bus will leave promptly at 7:30. Eating the buffet would be very rushed. I've done it, but you need to ask for the check when you sit down and then quickly eat and run up to and through the lobby and then down the front stairs to get to the bus stop.
The Express Cafe also opens at seven and is downstairs adjacent to the bus stop and convenient for breakfast before heading to the parks. You can find their menu on SOG's web site. Another option is to purchase Starbucks coffee in the lobby. They also open at 7 and have muffins and yogurt parfaits.

Thank you so much! We've decided to forgo the Surnise Package and grab something quick when doing early mornings. We will enjoy the buffet on our water park and departure days.

A heads up from our trip a few weeks ago, and my wife said the same thing last year too -- the Express Cafe (downstairs near bus pickup) did not have a quick turnaround for hot items on the menu, so allow plenty of time for ordering/prep before you have to get on the bus.

Yes to this^
The Express Cafe should be renamed.
The food is decent, but so slow to arrive. We save this place for non park days when we don't have to rush anywhere.
On park days, we send the first person out of the shower to Starbucks while the rest of us are getting ready.

Does anyone know anything about the upcoming refurb? Is it just rooms? We may be visiting in November and I'm wondering if the construction will be an inconvenience.

I think it's the entire Magnolia wing. Most likely they will do one floor at a time, but if you stay in the Palm wing, I wouldn't think it would have much of an impact. I have also heard that SOG may offer discounts throughout the rehab, so this would be something to watch for.

Any idea when this is supposed to start? We arrive in 2 weeks and always request magnolia wing!
