Never heard of them. Someone did bring a King Cake to work today, though. I did not get the baby.
On this end of the city they are just known as jelly doughnuts. Go over to Sheepshead Bay or Greenpoint, and you’ll see the “p” word. All taste yummy.😋

Thank you to everyone that explained what a Paczki is for those that don’t know. It’s always interesting to see how certain foods and drinks are popular depending on where people live. We live in a highly populated Polish area, so Paczkis around here, along with pierogies, are well known and loved.

Around here they have made them stip putting the babies in the King Cakes due to potential choking hazard. They put it in the box on the side, which is way less fun.

I bought a King Cake a couple of weeks ago. It had a large warning message on the box about the baby being inside the cake, but we finished the cake and there was no baby!

Oh, I bet it's very good, though it's not the prettiest example. King cakes are great! Here's one where you can see how the inside is done. They are kind of like big cinnamon rolls - not exactly, but similar.

We got one this year that had the traditional cinnamon filling along with sweetened cream cheese filled throughout the king cake.

Man, I wish I could get Pierogi around here!

We're just getting a regular dozen donuts from Dunkin today. Nothing fancy, and I won't be having one-I LOVE donuts, but I changed my eating habits some time ago and if I eat one, I just know I'd fall off the wagon.

Could they not put a gummy baby in it?
I know its not the tradition, but might be easier overall.

I'm sure many of you know this, but its illegal to sell Kinder Surprise eggs in the states, because of the toy inside.
Also illegal to bring them in and they will confiscate (and probably eat) them.

King cakes should have the same issue, and maybe they do - this article is from 2015 but:

I also saw comments that its often just loose in the box and you can do with it what you like.

While I think a gummy would technically work, I think you'd be more likely to eat it or cut into it without noticing. I believe the original babies were porcelain, so it's always been something very obvious if you cut or bit into it.

That's a good point about the Kinder Surprise eggs. I'm sure there are some legal reasonings beyond my knowledge that allow it for one but not the other. I believe at least one or two of the highly regarded NOLA bakeries sells cakes on Goldbelly, so it doesn't seem like it's anything tied to broad range distribution.

I have had ones where the baby is loose in the box or taped to the edge, but I believe the one I picked up at Kroger was from Gambino's which is known for baking the baby inside.

Are you SURE it didn't have the baby....🤔

....we got a [very] late Christmas gift in the mail last week from our DS and his DW. When you roll your Magic Band over the front it lights up green, in a circular motion [just like at the parks!] and says the schpiel, "Welcome, foolish mortals, to the Haunted Mansion....I am your host - your GHOST host} while playing the 4-note organ music. My DH is going to connect it to our home theatre so that it opens the door!
