The Running Thread--2024

I’m glad he was disqualified, I would have rude words for any person smoking on course near me. I had to cut a run around Hourglass Lake short because Disney, in all their wisdom, put all the smoking areas at Pop out by the lake and then advertised it as a running path.
I gave feedback to the Pop Century GM about the smoking areas being on the running path around Hourglass Lake. Nothing changed and I didn't receive a memorable response, but I at least provided the feedback.

I suppose it would be some kind of safety issue to force smokers out to little islands in the middle of the parking lots, but that would be my preference

Anecdotally, it appears to be common in Disney Shanghai for children as well.
Not in my experience, but I will say there are massive cultural differences that can be shocking upon a first visit to China. Spitting is pretty common and smoking is rampant everywhere. When you have so many people, personal space is just not a thing. You do kind of get used to some of it. But knowing how our own etiquette seems to take a back seat during races, I can only imagine how exponentially degraded it is there!

I have an appointment at StretchLab tomorrow to get an "assisted stretch". As someone who has never in her life been able to touch her toes without bending her knees, I'll report back. Picturing Link Hogthrob getting a massage from Peter Sellers:
My husband is my assisted stretcher. I make him do my calves every night. :D

Has anyone had their race shirts made into a quilt? Any recommendations for someone to do this? After MW and DL I’ve realized my shirt collection is out of control.

I went for one of their introductory sessions about a year or so ago and really liked it. I actually felt better then after some massages I've had. Unfortunately the one I went to was really only interested in selling memberships and I knew I would not use it enough to justify the cost. Will be curious to see what you think and if they've gotten more "flexible" (I crack myself up) in their operating model as I think it can be very beneficial.

Yes just looking at their website, it seems intent on selling you a membership which I am not interested in. I like running because I don't have to schedule it, I just do it when I want. I do not want to have to pre-purchase 4 or more sessions a month! I don't even get my hair cut very often because I don't feel I have the time, I am not an appointment person.

I haven't personally, but this is something that comes up a few times a year in one of the big rundisney fb groups.

Per a question about quilts the suggestions were:

-projectrepat (this was by far the most common, but there were complaints that they only cut the shirts into squares and that sometimes it chops off parts of the design/it's not centered and that the blanket is just pieced and not actually quilted...think of it as a big pillowcase that's sewn shut) I'm assuming this is also the least expensive of the choices because quilting services are $$$.

-too cool quilts (they actually quilt the blanket after piecing it)

-green cottage quilts (etsy)

-campus quilts

-DIY with graph paper and iron-on stabilizer and piece the top yourself, and then find a local sewist to add the backer and quilt it.....this assumes you have sewing skills

-ask at your local sewing-specialty store and find a local person to do it.

Someone else took pics of all her race shirts and made a mosaic that was then printed onto a fleece blanket (which is probably a lot cheaper and useable) but that wouldn't solve the "what do i do with all these shirts" issue

This topic has come up on one of the threads (costume?) but I can't remember which.
The gist of it was about the moisture wicking material, especially the version the rD shirts are made from, is a total PITA to work with. One individual mentioned making a quilt with theirs and I think they mentioned the PITA factor as well.
The stuff really squirms around a lot. I lop off the sleeves of my race shirts to make them a short sleeved shirt and the most successful approach I've had is to fold the material over for a straight hem with heat-activated fabric tape underneath and the material held in place with a combination of pins and/or painters tape. Iron the hem to get the fabric glued back on itself and then go to the sewing machine for a a stitched hem.

So if you manage to cut out the shirt fronts and get them square (your first challenge) maybe try heat tape before trying to sew it to a quilt. And now that I type it out, I'm wondering if a better solution might be to use adhesive sheets and iron the shirt front (at least the part with the graphics) to a cloth substrate that would make it a lot easier to then cut the shirt front out to a (presumably) square shape and then sew it all to the quilt.
YMMV

My mom has made both of my shirt quilts and could verify the tech material is a complete PITA. After she made my first one she said it was fun to do something different, but never again. I was shocked when she offered to make my second. She's saying never again, again.

Race shirts no but we had some of our son's baby shirts made into a quilt when he outgrew them. We used this company because we like the mission and they are not too far from where we live.

Just to make your life easier in the future, they sell washaway double sided tape that's a lot easier to use than iron on tape. I use it all the time when sewing with athletic fabric, since its such a pain to sew.

Regarding the quilt - right now I wear my race shirts to work, but if I ever get to a point where I feel like I have too many of them, what I'd likely do is interface the fabric with a woven interfacing so it behaves more like a quilting cotton, and then proceed normally. I actually really do like the idea of a quilt, and wish I didn't actually wear them now

I wear the heck out of my race shirts. That'll drop a bit as we have to start going back to the office, but I'll still be wearing them a lot.

What I would like to have acquired at the MW expo was a nice sweatshirt to wear when it's cooler, and preferably a regular sweatshirt and not a hoodie. Alas, the closest they had was this "jersey" thing that was way oversized and more like a hockey jersey. Pass

But thanks to a suggestion from a fellow rD-er, I turned to etsy and found the very nice sweatshirt pictured below. It is a nice royal blue (think Donald Duck), which doesn't show very well in the photo. That's the back of the shirt in the picture. The front has a smaller graphic over the heart.

Thanks for all the quilt recommendations! I've got some research to do. Definitely not something I can do myself. I don't know how to sew at all, not even a button.

The assisted stretch at StretchLab was good! I'm going to go back. There was no hard sell or anything for a membership at the end. I pre-paid for 3 more sessions and I can book them when I want.

She didn't hurt me or anything, but definitely stretched me beyond what I could or would ever do by myself. My hips are really really tight so I'm just going to ask her to focus on lower body the next time. I'd recommend it for anybody that is new to flexibility, even just to do a few times to get started.

QOTD: What's on your 2024 race calendar? Any big goals?

My plan includes...
Pittsburgh half marathon: I have extended family there and have a fondness for the city. Looking forward to running across the bridges! There's a sizeable hill late in the race so I doubt I'll be in PR territory. Goal is just to enjoy it!

Soldier Field 10 Miler: Will be my first 10 miler and first time running along the lakefront in Chicago. Looking forward to the atmosphere and a PR! :P

Nothing planned for the fall. I'm torn between repeating local races with easy logistics vs. longer drives for new-to-me races. Depending on my mood, I change my mind!
