My wife and I were staying at Copper Creek for Christmas. When we checked into the room we noticed this on the desk next to the bed.
What is it?
I ended up turning it off and laying it face down on the counter because it looked like it had a camera in it.

It's Disney's version of Alexa which they are installing in all the resorts a little at a time. You say "Hey Disney" to get it to respond instead of "Alexa". We've never had one of those type of devices in our home, but I'll admit we did have fun playing trivia with it during our Copper Creek stay a few weeks ago. Other than that we didn't really use it much. I remember one of the first things we asked it was an opening time for Jock Lindsey and being me and not trusting it  I checked the MDE app and Hey Disney was wrong. We asked it something else later and it got confused and just shut down.

Thank you.
I do not have anything like that nor will I ever have anything like that in my home. To be honest I am old school and would not trust something like that listening to everything I say.

The other thing is it looked like it has a camera on the upper right hand side of the screen. Does anyone know if it is a camera?

It has a camera but you can slide it closed.
Thanks I thought it was a camera however I did not se a way to close it. I just turned it off and placed it face down on the desk.
I do not like the idea of something like this, especially something like this with a camera in it in a hotel room.
I did not even know anything about it till we got to our room.
It would have been nice to have been informed when we checked in or at least an email something like this would bee in our room.

No way I'd have something like that in our house. It will get unplugged and put in the closet. Yikes

That really disappointed me to hear. Not that you didn't know what to do with it (I wouldn't either), but I'm disappointed that Disney spent all that money on those Disney Alexa things, then don't give any written instructions for guests as to how they can use it, what good things you can do with it and how.

There are instructions for them in the check in materials as well as in each room. Technology does scare a lot of people though. We used it several times. Very handy for giving you opening and closing times and all. If you asked it when the next show was for Lion King it would tell you. Very helpful if you just are familiar with how to use them. Great for weather too.

I’m not sure that Amazon didn’t sell them to Disney at a discount or subsidize them completely, since they’re an advertisement for those devices. I’m sure Amazon hopes Disney resort guests will like them and buy one for their own homes.

Lots of people happily manage everyday life without Alexa.
If it entertains you, that's great! Enjoy. But it's not necessary and it's not for everyone.

There are information cards in rooms as well. They're easy enough to unplug if not wanted. But from a security standpoint, it's not a whole lot different than the camera and microphone on a cell phone, tablet, laptop, etc.

Unfortunately we did not receive anything when we checked in other than key cards. I looked at the materials on the desk and did not see anything mentioning what it was or how to use it.

Technology does not scare me, it's when someone else has control over this kind of technology that may or will effect me it bothers me. The fact that it can listen in on a private conversation and possibly video my self or my family without us knowing about it to me is a problem.
And when someone says their are safe guards to prevent that I say if a program can be written to prevent that a program can be written to hack it.

I may have missed that the card.
As far as cameras and microphones on my personal technology I have control over those because they are in my possession, no one that I do not know will be messing with them. Also I use anti virus programs and camera covers on my computers, tablets and phones.

With the device in the room I have no idea what may have been done to it either by an outside source of even a past guest because I do not know how they work.

You unplugged it. Problem solved! 👍

There was one in my room at CSR, noticed it when I was unpacking and ignored it after that. I meant to unplug it but just forgot. We don't have anything like that at home since hubby is in computer security for a living and we don't really feel a need for it anyway. Frankly, if someone wants to use the camera to spy on my old body (I'm 67 years old) have at it. They will most likely only look once then run screaming away. And if they were listening they heard me talking to my grand daughter the night I babysat, talking to my son and his SO when they dropped her off and picked her up and me watching TV. Not very exciting in my room.
