The standard of care in NHS hospitals in the UK is some of the best in the world and has better outcomes than US healthcare. Many of our specialists are world leading. Wealthy people may elect to go to private hospitals for less serious health issues like childbirth and elective surgery but believe it or not, would choose the NHS for more serious and complex health matters. It is very rare that any Briton goes to the US for treatment, and when they do, it is for a pioneering treatment that isn’t available here, not to get a better standard of care. Many European countries also offer pioneering new treatments that the US might not have, and all have some sort of national health care service. The US is one of if not the only western country not to have one, which should say something.

The NHS in the UK certainly isn’t perfect, needs more funding and can be improved, but it is pretty much universally valued and wanted by the population. Since WWII as a society we try to take care of each other and that extends to other things like legally protected paid maternity leave (up to a year), free and subsidised childcare, free mental health services, etc as well as crucial protections.
We have too many people to have a functional NHS. 350 million vs 60 million or less in every other European nation.

What about a women’s right to a decent maternity leave which every first world country has except America?
Who said women in America don’t have rights to maternity leave?

They may not be exactly the same as they are in Canada, but we do have rights at the state level.

Here is my state, for example.

https://www.mass.gov/info-details/types-of-paid-family-and-medical-leave

I took a 12 week paid maternity leave myself. I found it sufficient time to bond with my babies and then I returned to work. I can’t speak for everyone, as I don‘t know what each state dictates. But it’s not that we don’t have rights - men and women in many cases. And family rights, as well, as you can see in the link.

Don't employers have to give you 12 weeks of FMLA for childbirth? I know my fellow employees of childbearing age use a combination of PTO and short-term disability. I don't hear anyone at work complaining. They make a good salary and plan accordingly.

Most industrialized countries give a year with some type of social benefits.payment system.

https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/maternity-leave-by-country

Moreover, the U.S. has fewer maternity leave protections and benefits than any other country in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), an international alliance that includes many of the world's most developed and highest-income countries.. However, many states, including California, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Washington, and the non-state District of Columbia have created their own plans to offer paid maternity leave.

@CdnCarrie why are you hammering down on an issue not affecting your country? I get you have issues with ours but you seem to be on virtual mission here. I mean are you going to compare childcare in the USA vs Canada/Europe next? Just an observation.

Other countries are a lot more involved with our politics than most Americans are. When I was in Athens in October 2016 they were showing our presidential debate in a private showing at the Hard Rock cafe. Everywhere I went they wanted to know who I was voting for. I've done a lot of traveling around the world and I've found most people are very knowledgeable about everything going on in the US.

I was just in Turkey on their election day. I was on a tour with a bunch of Americans and the tour driver had to explain to everyone who Erdogan is.

I'm guessing a large percentage of Americans know nothing about Trudeau or could even name the provinces in Canada. I don't think that is something we should be proud of, but Americans don't care about the rest of the world as much as they care about us.

@Imzadi ❤ I may have to block you temporarily so this stops showing in my feed. It's a train wreck that I can't stop reading.

@eksmama01 It will be over eventually. Then you can unblock me. I think the Mods maybe still don't know this thread went off in other directions? :upsidedow :confused3:lmao:

Maybe the last they looked was on July 4th when posters were actually celebrating that day on the thread, and waited till the holiday was mostly over :thumbsup2 before turning it into a "usual" controversial DIS thread. The thread is titled "America" and like America, we have a LOT of opinions on it.

I don't see anyone attacking each other with mud slinging yet, . . . only at Elon Musk. :lmao:That usually gets a thread shut down. A real rumor that people might want to talk about Musk is that Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg may actually fight it out in the UFC Octagon or Coliseum in Rome. (Coliseum officials in Italy actually approached Zuckerberg about it.) I'm betting on Zuckerberg to smack Musk in the mouth.

I know that to a degree given that their news often covers our headline daily stories. I believe most in the USA know more about the world then other nations give us credit for. Other nations only care because of our economic aid and military support. I say this with all respect and no arrogance. Our military protects all our allies and I think Canadians and many other countries forget that. Without that guaranteed protection the out look for those countries would be very different. Unfortunately, the price for that is the lack of investment back into government programs that support the American people. I wish other countries would recognize that and be more appreciative for that sacrifice.

I thought you liked discussing the differences between our countries?

Sometimes other posters say things like the healthcare is better in the USA or there are more opportunities/freedoms in the USA.
Both stated in this thread

But it’s not okay for me to say I disagree?

I love the USA. I spend lots of tourism money there. I have family line on the east coast dating back couple centuries.

Why do you have such an issue with Canada?

When I was in Ireland our tour driver who was very worried about the world economy told us when America gets the sniffles the rest of the world gets the flu. How long we continue to be the number one economy is a whole nether conversation.

I don't mind discussion at all but sometimes the tone of some of your posts sound condescending. I'm not accusing you of meaning it to come across that way. It just feels like it. I know I myself have accidentally come across that way with some of my posts in the past unintentionally. Just what I have noticed. I love hearing your view points, don't get me wrong.

We'll know after WW3 (which hopefully doesn't happen).

then why do I know people from England that came to UAB In Birmingham Alabama for a knee replacement. Seems fishy that they would choose to do that instead of the stellar state of the art care you describe. Medical tourism is a big deal in the UK. https://amp.theguardian.com/society...m-desperation-britons-resort-treatment-abroad

So our military does nothing? My friend just buried her husband who served 2 tours in Afghanistan! He wax 62 and died of covid in June.

What an awful thing to say Buzz!

When I had my laser eye surgery years ago the whole waiting room were Americans from North Dakota and Minnesota. The office even had brochures and info on hotels for Americans.
Guess from my one antidote we can determine the USA system isn’t stellar. /s

No, never said that. I'm saying a NATO country and allies are backed by the USA and that gives those countries a better standing in the world because of that standing. Canada will not be threatened by adversaries as much because of our military alliance. I admire all the Canadian forces for all their sacrifice and good they do for the world. My only point is no one spends more on their military than the USA and for that reason other countries don't. Without the military power of the USA present, our neighboring countries would look at their own nation's security differently. Don't misunderstand me, I am thankful that we have great allies and work together to make the world a better place. But sometimes our military's strength is taken for granted I feel from some of our allies citizens once in a while. Just my thoughts.

I am thankful for your friend's service. May he rest in peace and may your friend find happiness again. 🙂 🙏

I appreciate that the thread allowed us to voice our view points even if it's just for a brief period. That's a pretty American thing to do and worth celebrating. So I would say good job on a great thread. 👍

And, the US is also backed up by other NATO countries as well. Not to the same extent, based on budget alone, but is isn’t the US protecting us all with us cowering in the background.
