Rise of the Resistance ride - question about the drop

I'm very interested in riding the new Star Wars ride ROTR. But I have a 7 year old who is scared of rides with any drops. He could barely handle the first big drop in POTC. I have not even tempted to take him on Indiana Jones because I think the last drop will be too much for him. How is the ROTR drop compare to POTC?

No actual drops not like POTC. It's a trackless ride so there is a simulated drop but not like down a big hill.

It’s like a small tower of terror drop. Same mechanism and feeling but like a two story drop.
Is it even like two stories? I feel like it’s just one or two seconds of simulated dropping. My 7 year old doesn’t love it but it’s so short that he deals because he loves the rest of the ride.

It's definitely not as far as tower of terror. It may feel a little bit more intense as you have the visuals they're making you feel like you're dropping. I would be surprised if it was even one story tall. My 4-year-old rode it with no problems.

I find the drop more surprising than it is intense, IMO. Especially when you ride it and don’t know it’s coming. My first time, it was a complete surprise, so it was a big WHOA because we were so immersed in the ride and the universe and didn’t expect it.. But the actual drop itself is not that big or intense.

It's a one level drop. You can see the elevator lift you to the top floor during the ride. I avoided any ride through videos for my first ride, but I read it was a drop so I was cognizant of one, and saw it coming. The visual cues of the other pods dropping from the screen let's you know when your pod will drop. For some it may feel more intense because the drop takes you into the 'star tours' motion of flying to land back on the ground. So it's a combo of a tower of terror free fall [only one story] into a flight simulation back to the ground.

I'd ride it first, then you can explain it to him how it feels. But honestly, if he feels scared from a smooth slanted drop in potc, a small vertical drop with a free fall might be about the same.

It is super short as you"escape" the ship, right at the end. By the time you register it was a drop, you are back "on planet" and everyone is whooping it up. My experience was at WDW, but I haven't heard it's different at DL.

We rode it at WDW around when it first opened and did not know what to expect. The surprise of the drop scared me, but I don't think it would be as bad if we knew that it was coming and when.
Same with Universal's Hagrids, which we rode multiple times and didn't mind the ride's drop after the first time.
But I'm a roller coaster junkie and have no trouble with POTC. I'd say Rise would be more intense.

My son is afraid of drops and wasn't thrilled with the drops on POTC. But he loves Rise and especially the drop, which he thought felt more like when you jump in an elevator.

Part of the thing with the POTC drop is that they’re totally in the dark, especially the first one. To me, the ROTC drop feels shorter than the longer of the POTC ones.

I'm what my friends call "the World's Biggest Ride Chicken."

For the record, when I put the message in our group chat that I was going on Rise solo two of my long time friends asked if I had hit my head. Yeah, that's my ride chicken level.

My friends had sworn that the drop was that fast, I wouldn't even had time to drop an F Bomb. Well they were wrong with that. :P

However, it was nowhere as bad as the drop on Pirates for me. Pirates felt way more free fall to me. This more felt like being pulled down a hill really fast. Only motion I can compare it to, can't do Star Tours because of neck issues.

I agree with others, it's not that bad, basically you quickly drop from 2nd floor to 1st floor (since earlier in the ride you go up to 2nd floor in the AT AT scene)

This is how it's done-
You're looking at a giant IMAX style screen the whole time so you don't "see" the drop-

The white box/elevator carriage also is on a motion base to move around like Star Tours-

If he has trouble with the drop in POTC, I'd skip Rise of the Resistance for now. The drop is more intense or maybe just feels more intense than POTC.

For the record, I am a total ride coward, but I enjoyed Rise of the Resistance. I also understand that everyone's ride tolerance is different.
I agree that if he has trouble with the small drop in Pirates, it might be best to skip Rise for now. I also really do not like drops at all and the first time I rode Rise I couldn't thoroughly enjoy it because I was worried about the drop. It is quite intense, but very quick. Feels like it lasts a couple of seconds.
If possible, maybe you could ride it without him and then you'd be able to better gauge how he'd react.

Is your son okay with watching a ride through video of Rise? Then he can decide whether he wants to try it or skip it this time.
DH doesn't like drops (one and DONE on TOT), but he really likes Rise. He said that knowing it only happens once on that ride really helped.

I have always hated drops, too. I offer a suggestion to your son for the future when he’s ready to try a drop.
I always hated the way my stomach felt during a drop until my son told me a tip. Before the drop, tighten your tummy and hold it thru the drop. It really makes a difference! It’s easy to know when the drop is about to happen on ROTR so you can remind him to tighten his tummy and enjoy the ride even with the drop. I hope this tip helps your son when he’s ready to try. Have fun!
