Vegan/Vegetarian Restaurant/Dining Help Thread

Sanaa is a wonderful choice for vegans and vegetarians. I love both dinner and lunch there. The quick service in Pandora in AK has an amazing fried tofu dish - probably one of my favorite quick service meals, ever! I’ve heard the chefs at Yak and Yeti will sub tofu for any of the meats in their menu selections. I haven’t tried this myself, but plan on finding out before my May trip.

I'm really struggling to find suitable food while on my trip. I'm a vegetarian, but also have to stay on a low-fat diet due to a recent surgery. I'm looking for recommendations that are not Impossible burger based or just a salad. I can't eat the impossible burgers due to the high fat content in them. Besides that fact that I also don't really like them. If I wanted something that tasted like meat, I would eat meat. I also would prefer to not have to eat salads at every meal. That gets old fast. I love tofu, so I am very interested in trying the quick service at Pandora.
What other suggestions do you guys have. Quick service is going to be best for our group. We are always on the go.

On an aside, I wish that Disney did not move to every vegetarian option being impossible based. I get having it at some locations, but why ALL locations. A lot of vegetarians don't actually like it.

As a local I’ve definitely noticed that especially after re-opening the default “plant based” option is impossible burger with avacado or jackfruit and some kind of sauce….

Pandora is definitely one of my favorites… the zucchini ronto wrap was also a pleasant surprise though note it has a bit of a kick and next time I think I’ll sit down and try not to walk and eat

There is also a vegan/pescatarian food truck at springs that I’ve yet to check out

I'm with you on the impossible burger. It's great if you're looking for something that's not meat that looks and tastes like meat. I don't like meat. Anyway, here are a few of my faves: QS: Veggie bowl at Pecos Bill's at MK, Hollywood studios has Backlot Express (veg sandwich) and Rosie's Al American (fried green tomato sandwich) Sunshine Seasons at Epcot has several Asian based entrees, (noodles and tofu) Tangierine cafe is nearly all vegetarian, Regal Eagle at Epcot has a good jackfruit sandwich, Harambe Market at AK has some veggie bowls and other veg options.
TS: HS Mama Melrose has a yummy polenta/cauliflower dish and several veg flatbreads, Epcot's Spice Road Table is vegetarian heaven, Skipper's Canteen at MK has a tofu/noodle thing that's good and Tiffin's has some options but we prefer Nomad Lounge - DELICIOUS corn soup and bread service. There are a lot more. I've been vegetarian at WDW for 20 years and I never have a problem. At table service restaurants, ASK. Sometimes they have things that aren't on the menu. Have fun!

Backlot express hasn’t had vegi sandwich in a while their plant based option was a hummus and vegetable plate up until a few weeks ago when they added a tofu bowl same with Rosie’s it’s now a plant based lobster roll I believe

That said I want to add the chickpea salad sandwich from the Mara at AKL as another non meat tasting plant based option I’d recommended

Absolutely this! I’ve gotten some lovely meals that way in the past. Sometimes I’ve asked to just have the meat omitted from something, and they’ve been able to do it.

Has anyone been to California Grill since they started the 50th Anniversary pris fixe menu? It looks like there is only one single vegetarian option and my DD and her boyfriend are both vegetarians. Do they offer anything else "off menu"? She really loved the old "mix and match" vegetarian appetizer menu they had a couple of years ago.

Does anyone have any recommendations for places in the parks that can do a QS breakfast that is vegan and gluten free? Or even just egg/dairy/gluten free? It's for allergies, but we get more options if we ask people to make things vegan and add meat than asking people to consider making anything dairy or egg free, especially since most of the gluten free breads seem to add egg. I'm trying to figure out if I can buy breakfast anywhere during our trip AND rope drop, and it's really not looking like it.

If you had time to do springs before your first park day you could always pick up some items at erin McKenna at springs those are vegan/gf

That's a good reminder, we will at least have those items. We always prioritize going to downtown Disney our first day and that's one of the reasons. I'm hoping that not having a cooler with us on this trip isn't going to cause a problem.

If you want something for breakfast that isn't popcorn or fruit (if you can find fruit), then your best bet is having breakfast food in the room.

I like having breakfast at the resort, where there are plenty of options for you (and me--I'm vegan), but RDing means leaving before the QS opens. Very annoying--and everyone else on the early-morning bus will readily agree with you!

Yeah, I'm super annoyed at what they have done with the combination of QS hours and park hours. Last Spring at the Poly they were technically opening Captain cooks at 7AM- but they didn't take allergy orders until 7:30. And then, they weren't staffing the register to push people to do mobile orders, so it might take 15+ minutes to order. We gave up RD at Animal kingdom before even trying, but by the time we could just get a side order of bacon for my son people had been in the parks for an hour already!

I was just hoping someone might have secret tricks for some location that decided to start doing allergy waffles in the park or something.

Perhaps someone does know this, however, I've found no evidence of it in 2 recent trips.

We did, however, find a way to overcome this, but it requires $ and luck. The $ will be spent on G+ and ILL$. The luck will be if at 7 a.m. you can get the afternoon times you want for your must-do attractions and more luck will be needed for your 2nd choice 2 hours after park opening.

If you are lucky and diligently stick to you phone every 2 hours, you could make a nice stack for the afternoon or late afternoon and evening. Then you do not have to RD. You can have breakfast (after that initial 7 a.m. encounter with Disney's IT) and hang out at your resort for a while.

Alternatively, you can use your first G+ and ILL$ (at 7 a.m.) for something more like 10 a.m. Then you can also have breakfast at the resort.

Of course these methods not only cost money and require a degree of persistence and luck, they also eliminate the advantages of RDing.

We have been seriously considering those afternoon strategies. It's such a change after years of go-go-go in the mornings then relaxing after lunch, but I don't know Disney wants to accommodate our morning style anymore. This might be the end of our regular room stays in lieu of DVC 1 bedrooms for the kitchen. I really like breakfast these days. Thinking about skipping it makes me crabby.

I hear you. I, too, prefer to have a real breakfast.

We had a successful DHS day on our last trip where we were able to schedule our RotR ILL$ for around 3 p.m., and we built everything else around that. We had breakfast, hung out at the resort, made more G+ selections at DHS, had lunch at DS, and got to DHS around 2. It worked out, but it also might not've worked out, since who knows what time one will get for the all-important ILL$.

It almost gives me more anxiety thinking about having to worry what times we will get.
I wish I had put together this timing issue with breakfast before I made dining reservations- We always make a big deal of our TS and we do a lunch every day. That way we're in the parks all morning, eat lunch, then take a break and often come back later. I'm nervous about waking up in time to go to lunch and spending early afternoon there how it goes is really going to be dependent on the weather. To top it off we're going as a group of eight so I figured out very early on it seems to be impossible to move our times this year.

You will figure it out, and the main thing to remember is that you're there to have a good time, not to schedule things. And if most of your group doesn't mind standing in line, then that's helpful as well. Also, lines tend to be much shorter closer to park closing--this is true of all the parks. So if you don't mind staying up later, you can do that.

The last trip we took, last month, we had a plan A and a plan B every morning before we made our reservations. Sometimes we had a plan C! Some mornings we just needed to hang out longer, even though we're both early risers. Somehow, everything worked out.

I hope you don't have to do all the planning for 7 other people. If some of these people are adults, considering splitting up the responsibilities.

I am, but to be fair it's my immediate family and my little brother's family and we all know I'm going to worry over it and make all these little plans whether or not anyone else tries to do it too... so it's ok. They are also on a first trip with two little pre-school girls, so I've been planning out ways to streamline days if we are together, or outlines of tips if we need to split up. I'm mostly utilizing things from helpful bloggers for simplicity, like I made minor alterations to the maps Josh @ easywdw made to update changes so I can hand them a color coded "try this if you get overwhelmed." I even highlighted things I know their girls will want to see. I really want to feel like I at least set them up to have higher chances of a great trip. They are pretty laid back so it should go well and it would be a dream to have a family to sometimes vacation with.

I always freak out a bit before our trips when things throw me off, and this time food is a big hurdle because I just started popping up with them in the last few years. So I'll freak out, and then we will get there and love it so much we try not to leave, again.
