How to: FISH for Lightning Lane Experience Passes

Yeah the general situation seems to be that a LLEP from any ride will include any ride except Rise, Space, Indy, Matterhorn, Peter Pan, Toy Story, WEB Slingers, and Racers. The exception is if the LLEP is from Space, Indy, Matterhorn, or Toy Story. In that case it will just not be valid on Peter Pan or the ILL rides (Rise, WEB, and Racers). This is based on my experience on my 1/7-1/12 trip getting LLEPs from Thunder, Matterhorn, Falcon, Roger Rabbit, Grizzly, Monsters Inc, Soarin’, and Goofy’s. Buzz seems to maybe be the exception to this situation. Somebody in another thread mentioned that their Buzz LLEP was valid on Space, Matterhorn, etc. I’m going again next week and if Buzz breaks down I’m gonna jump on it and see what happens

At the end of the Maxpass era, when a ride went down, it wouldn't issue any Fastpasses at all. If it only pushes back a little bit, that makes it easier to get LLEPs.

This 30 minute rule was introduced about a year after Maxpass. So if at 8AM, you got a Space Mountain Maxpass with a window from 8:05 to 9:05, you originally could get your second Maxpass at 8:05. After the 30 minute rule was implemented, you couldn't get your 2nd Maxpass until 8:30. It was to prevent people getting over a hundred Maxpasses in a day.

Thanks for the info.

Less than a year. It was already implemented by the time I used MP for the first time and MP had only been around for a couple months by that point. Disney closed that loophole fairly quick.

The 30 minute window only applied to book the next MP if you hadn't scanned in for the relevant MP. Once you scanned in, the 30 minute window was no longer applicable and you could book the next one immediately. So in your example, if you scanned in at 8:05, you could book the next right then at 8:05. Also a MP pulled at 8 with an 8:05 could be immediately used without waiting until 8:05 due to the soft 5 minute before window.

EDIT: I'm crazy and went back and looked to get exact dates.

MP launched July 19, 2017. It started with the 30 minute cool down because that was added during the time when people were able to pull paper FPs with immediate return times without a cool down when they appeared to be running some sort of test on the system. That only lasted from around July 1, 2017 to July 14, 2017 according to the discussion that happened on these boards about it.

Can’t wait to try this! We weren’t aware of the tiering, and were blocked from riding Space Mountain over the weekend with a multi-experience pass from Big Thunder. The cast member told me to click on the white space next to the words on the pass, or else on the “where can I go?” link, to access a list of attractions.

The following images are screenshots of the available and unavailable rides for the tier BTMRR occupies. (These images don’t include the entire list.) We’d never run into this before, presumably because the Maxpass we had in the past was always Indy, and we could go anywhere. Now we know.
Odd Big Thunder LLEP pass blocked Space Mountain. They must be changing and testing things.

So, take this with a grain of salt, but I think Disney is starting to change how quickly after a breakdown they "officially" take a ride offline. Twice last weekend, we were in lines fir rides that were "experiencing a momentary shutdown" but they took FOREVER to actually switch the ride over to "temporarily closed" status. This happened on Toy Story and Goofy's Sky School. We tried to wait out Goofy's and stood there for 15 minutes before bailing (we were in the LL with a DAS). The ride didn't come offline in the app until 10 minutes later, and it was then brought back online within 5 minutes. I found that really odd.

A similar thing happened with Toy Story. We showed up to scan in and the app showed the ride open, but the CM wouldn't let us enter the line, saying the ride was down. We went on the Pal A Round and afterwards, they were STILL not letting people get in line but they had NOT taken the ride offline.

I feel like they are doing this on purpose to avoid giving out all these freebie LL passes.

This is a great thread!

Just to clarify (I'm still getting up to speed with all of this and about to do my first trip with Genie+): The goal is to get a few LL passes that can be saved until later in the day and used on rides that you will then go on again using the regular (once per day) LL pass?

So if I have a regular (once per day) LL for Matterhorn at noon, my extra passes will not be impacted and can be used later?

I never understood the idea of waiting to book LL until later during busy days but this changes things.

We are going President's weekend and anticipate large crowds so this is really helpful. Thank you!

You are correct. LLEPs can be used anytime in the day. On busy days especially if you’re park hopping I personally would not wait until the afternoon to start booking LLs.

It all depends on when you arrive, how long you are staying, how crowded it is, how attached you want to be to your phone.
- The earlier you arrive the more time you have to attempt the LLEP.
- If you are staying until say 6pm, you may not have enough time to use the LL.
- If it is crowded the faster the LLs may sell out. Of course the refresh trick is there, but there is no guarantee with that method.
- You may be using your phone much more than a usual guest.

We are not park hopping. We are there for two days, one for each park. Plan is to get there for rope drop and stay until they forcibly remove us. :-)

I have no problem being attached to my phone more than usual. There is usually some down time when we are on lines anyway.

We are going to try to do most things in the park so we will be pretty busy and might not get a lot of repeats anyway. Just trying to maximize the fun and the time together!

Thanks again for all your advice!

I have had no luck with this. We were there this week and Buzz went down, but my LL just stayed for Buzz even though it was closed. The next day Monsters Inc went down and my LL just stayed for Monsters even though it was well into the return window. Am I doing something wrong?

From what I noticed is if the attraction is about to come back up. For example, cycling vehicles (I have seen this happen on TSMM), it may not release the LLEP.
The same thing happens in reverse as well. If the attraction is going to take a while to come back online, they may release the LLEP early.

Yeah it’s not always immediate. Sometimes it goes well into the return window and then it comes back up. You aren’t guaranteed to get a LLEP

What happened to your LL passes then, if the ride didn't come back up within your return window? Did it just disappear, or did they extend your return time?

One time Indy was down during my entire LL return time from 10-11 PM. It never came back or converted to a multiple experience pass and the park closed at midnight. After 11:15 it disappeared. I provided screenshots when I was at the park 2 days later (I went to a guest relations booth early) and they issued me a multiple experiences makeup pass. So always take screenshots!

Nothing, they just stayed through the whole return time. I ended up canceling Monsters towards the end so we could grab some rides at Disneyland.

So, weirdly, yesterday we got a DAS for Space Mountain for anytime after 2pm. Got it at 1:05pm. The ride then went down like a minute later. Instantly, our DAS changed to a Multiple Experience pass but still could only be used after 2pm. That seemed odd. How would the app know that Space wouldn't come back up by 2pm and issue a ME pass so quickly?

What was odd about it was, it let me make ANOTHER DAS selection. I chose Big Thunder, also available after 2pm. Initially after making that selection, it didn't show up on my home screen. But, it did eventually populate, so then I was technically holding 2 DAS passes at once, which is not supposed to be allowed. We rode Big Thunder around 2:45 and by then Space had come back up and we rode it right afterwards, but not before getting another DAS issued.
