News Round Up 2020

This is just from a local source but it's easily searchable. Looks like Wonder Woman 1984 will be released in theaters AND on HBO Max (for free for the first month, ETA: still need a subscription for HBO Max just no added cost beyond that) at the same time in December. After the first month is up it will revert back to just being available in theaters for at least a few weeks before going the On Demand rental. It's def. a different way of doing it but I really like they are trying to get a big movie in the theaters.

This seems like a big win for those who mentioned they would go see a movie in a theater if given the opportunity.

Seems like a good structure to set up and will be interesting to see how it performs

Personally we won't be seeing that any time soon - not going near a theater the way things are going and don't have HBO max (and don't want/need another streaming service)

also starting to realize there are very few things I can think of that I would be willing to pay extra to see early 😅

I'd be open to seeing it in theaters but we'll see if they'll be open then given the present COVID situation in my area and that of AMC

We have U-verse and the cable package we have comes HBO and other premium channels except EPIX. With them re-doing the streaming apps over the summer HBO swapped out HBO Go app with HBO Max so we have HBO Max included. I wouldn't add on HBO Max just for Wonder Woman but would if I felt I would use it based on their catalog.

If it does well enough it might work for some of these other upcoming movies using that format of dual options (whatever streaming service they choose). It's at least adding the theaters into the equation instead of leaving them in the dust

Yeah we too get HBO Max for free with out cable service so we’d be able to see WW. But I’ve never even seen the first WW, so there‘s no desire for me to see this one. DC movies just don’t do it for me.

But you may want to look into it. If you get HBO with your cable subscription, you are eligible to get HBO Max for free.

Wonder Woman was considered the exception to many people's viewpoint on how DC was doing their movies in comparison to how Marvel was as in it was so much better than the other DC attempts that just missed the mark. If you only ever see one DC recent movie I'd pick Wonder Woman but that's purely my opinion because I totally understand what you mean.

I am in the same boat in that I just don't like the DCEU movies (I love DC Comics!) and never really sat down and watched it. While WW did seem better than the previous offerings, it still seemed to suffer from some of the same issues. I alos think the decision to set it during WWI was questionable and a poor fit for the character. For me, there jsut wasn't enough there to garner my interest, and the same is true for this one. The DCEU already missed the mark with me so I'm just not worried about it.

This is the way the toys are normally distributed here also. A new one is released every x amount of time. At first you can only get the first one then when they release the new one everyone gets the new one but you can try to exchange for the first one until they run out of it.

We've never had them all release at the same time that I'm aware of.

When I worked at McDonald's years ago this is how it worked. The only time it was different was when we had the 101 Dalmatians. There were 101 different ones all packaged so you could not tell what you were getting. I have well over 50 different ones upstairs in a box. With working there I was able to feel them to make sure they were different. Not sure why I still have them.

That's okay, not everything is for everyone :) In terms of reception Wonder Woman won out by a mile in terms of recent DC movies at the time and that's what I was referring to.

The reason I posted the original comment was not to necessarily go on and on about Wonder Woman, the movie itself because that's just up to people's taste;I was just giving a recommendation to the other poster, but to say there will be a new tactic for what it considered a big movie finally headed to the theaters instead of being delayed..yet again..I hope they stick with the intended release date though, I feel like we've been burned a lot this year on that front!

My local McDonald's had all 10 available. They sold the toys to me for 56 cents each (discounted price with food order), so I got the complete set for less than $6 and I didn't have to buy a happy meal specifically to get the discount, just any food item. So I bought something off the $1 value menu.
Wow. I am pretty sure the "official" price of just the toy is more than 56 cents . .and I have never seen a McDonalds with all the toys at once. I am going to have to try that this afternoon. (I got the Mission Space one last night)

Going direct to HBO Max without an extra fee is huge. I feel Disney tried (and failed) with Mulan and charging the extra fee to "see it early" and this is the industry response.

If a huge blockbuster like this is going straight to streaming .. I would expect most movies in 2021 to do that especially with many states doing "re-lockdowns".

Will Disney put Black Widow straight to Disney+ now, May is a long way away .. but so was Christmas 2020 when they originally delayed Wonder Woman 84

Sure. I wasn't trying to challenge your stance or anything, just adding my two-cents to the conversation. Wonder Woman is indeed leaps and bounds above the other DCEU movies, but that's a low, low bar to begin with.

We don’t know for sure that Mulan was a failure. I wouldn’t expect Disney to move away from the premier access after only one trial. As we’ve been stating in this threat and the Disney+ thread, Disney will want a MCU movie as part of premier to really gauge the interest in that service. I think we’ll also see some price changes on future movies before they would totally move away from it.

At launch it was discussed (4K and Atmos) as a future update but still nothing....I would hope Patty Jenkins could put some pressure on them so that her movie at least looks and sounds like it should on the screen.

I really don't mind the premiere access idea, but I don't think it should be linked to Disney+. I would say release it as a rental at a lower price or to own digitally at a higher price through the usual channels (Movies Anywhere, etc.). Then put it on D+ for all just as they would with any other movie after the theatrical and physical/digital media window.

True -- that is my own bias, but when the competition is releasing their blockbuster "for free", it may be hard for Disney to charge again. But yes .. an MCU movie is a different beast than a live-action remake. At this point Disney may have to delay Black Widow until 2022 if they want it to release "traditionally".

And is Disney releasing Soul for free on Christmas too? I guess both companies could market those as promotional "Christmas gifts" and go back to charging again once they get people to subscribe. But having an inconsistency on what movies release "free" and which ones are paid may just be confusing (and frustrating) to customers.

Yeah Soul is free, like Onward was.
