Debt Dumpers 2020

Productive week! Submitted paperwork to close the incompetent 401(k) today. Paperwork turned in for the surgeon consultation tomorrow. Book launches tomorrow. Set up different doctor appointment for next week for that surgery. Keeping tabs on the possible new stimulus proposals. Eyeballing my debt: I'm coming for you!

Well, the deposit went in this morning and I've already been down to the car dealership and paid the car off, the furniture place to pay off our couches, and called to pay off 1 loan before I hit my daily purchase limit. Tomorrow I'll call and pay off the other 2 loans and we are debt free minus the two credit cards we use to put gas on and pay off each month.

I almost cried this morning making payments because it feels amazing to not have that anymore. Over $1,000 a month in payments now eliminated from our budget.

That's awesome! Really, you are debt free tomorrow when your loans are paid off. You did it! Just having the cards is fine as long as the two cards are already paid off, and going forward is paid off every month, I don't see that in the calculation of debt. Unless you want to have no credit cards and only debit cards if that works better for you, whatever is your level of comfort on personal finance.

I'm so happy.. We have to keep the credit cards because of travel. Most hotels will put bigger holds if you use your debit card.

I put just about all purchases on the cards we have if I can, and most definitely agree with you on travel. Also works great with returns and I can't ever be convinced otherwise. Have had a few situations where needed a refund on a check written, and had to wait it out for the money to be returned to me (currently going through that right now on 2k - don't ask folks! Let's just say I should have waited to be sure before writing said check and now waiting for said money back and that's no small amount!)

Well, it's officially official. We are debt free!!! 🎉🎉

We had about $700 left over after all the payments and since things are back open here (or will be by next weekend) we have decided to splurge on date night and take $300 each to the casino and have dinner at the nice steak house.

We are getting our quarterly bonus on our next check: $1.10 per hour worked during the first quarter. It should work out to around $800ish between both of us. It was also announced we would be getting another $300 each in June.

We've been back and forth on keeping vs selling his car. It's paid off, but needs some front end work, new tires, a new battery, and 2 years of tags paid on it. We can manage with one vehicle, but having 2 would be so much more convenient for everything. So I think I'm going to surprise him and get the tags renewed and buy a battery for it when I go to change the title over on my car when it comes in next week.

I hope your book release went splendidly!
Thank you! It's been a busy day! I think the sales were decent. Won't know for a couple of weeks.

The local surgeon can't perform the surgery due to some complications I have. So I've been referred to UC San Francisco. I have feelings about this:
:crazy2: - I don't want to drive 3.5 hours ONE WAY just for consults and follow-ups! Praying for teleconferences up to the surgical date.
 - At least it's a specialty clinic that will hopefully be able to use my breast tissue for research for this disease.
:rolleyes1 - So begins the wait. Again. But the local doctor did say that they may call me soon because of "all of the business going on in there."
:rotfl2:- My boobs are more dramatic than my teenage daughters.

It's a hassle but people often travel long distances to large university hospitals for specialty care, sometimes even have to fly. If it gets you better results it's worth it, IMHO. We sometimes travel further than that for far less important reasons.:hug:

My sister had a double with reconstruction shortly after her 45th birthday. She really wanted a good outcome and even though she works in a large teaching hospital she got 2 more opinions, besides the first one at her hospital. (Luckily plenty of options in the Philadelphia area within a 45 min drive.) It was the 3rd opinion physicians that she chose for her surgery which happen to be where I work. They really did do a great job. The last time I saw her in a low cut tank style summer dress I almost forgot for a second that she had it done. She had a lot of complications which most people don't. Seriously if there was a 1% chance of X, she'd be in that 1%. Now, it's been almost 10 years. She is still mad that she had to go through it but she is pleased with the results and has no regrets. Her odds of recurrence is as low as it can be so that was the right choice for her.

BTW, at the 2nd opinion plastic surgeon visit she asked if he could show some photos as to what results she should be expecting. He told her that would be a HIPAA violation. She was like :furious::furious: . She knew they would have teaching files with no identifiers and it need not show anyone's face. The first doctor had already showed her photos of different options (TRAM vs implant). She said it took all her strength to sit through the rest of the visit and not just get up and walk out.

Anyway, this doctor in SF may be the best reason to ever travel 3.5 hours, for anything. Sending you hugs and good wishes.

Congratulations!! I'm so happy for you. :thumbsup2:cheer2::cool1:

If it's otherwise a decent car, it is still easier to pay to get work done on your car than to have car payments again. I try to look at batteries, brakes, tires, oil changes as just maintenance; even the greatest cars ever will eventually need all of those things.

Feel like we are finally making progress paying things off. I bought the new 4th of July Disney Dooney yesterday, but we were married on the 4th of July so I consider it essential! Husband and I are both essential employees so still working. My job is going back to regular schedule June 1. We are finally getting cases in our area so not sure if the June 1 will happen or not.

So many people are becoming debt free this week.
We are doing just the opposite. Ds20 has signed up for welding school that should start in June. From a social distancing perspective, each student has their own "booth" for welding with a sort of curtain all around each student so others passing by don't burn their eyes. It's close to $9000 and he'd be done around September. Dh is a welder and loves the school so that's half the battle. lol
I used a BT check from Discover that 0% interest until next spring. I should be able to save enough to pay it off in around 3.5 months. My Varo savings account just dropped to 1.4% IIRC so it will earn a little something until the end of the promotional interest rate. Dh and I haven't yet discussed how much ds should be contributing to this loan. We'll figure out something fair. I think 1/3 to 1/2 is reasonable.

It was last July that I did a similar thing with our Discover & Capital One Venture cards for our Norway cruise. I didn't want to risk them giving me some BS story about how & when they start counting 12 months and exactly when the promotional rate ends so I scheduled the final payment to pay the rest off with the June payment. This is for our Capital One Venture card which I almost never use. The part that was on our Discover cards was paid off in April and May.

As the spring buds on the trees all turned into leaves, we noticed our huge maple tree by the curb has a lot of dead branches. Probably 10 branches have no leaves and woodpeckers are in it very often. Dh says they eat ants. Ugh. We got an estimate from our tree guy. It's $1500 to trim the dead branches or $2500 to take it down. I want it down (noting our past bad luck with big trees.) but dh wanted to just get it trimmed because it's beautiful and provides a lot of shade. Once we talked about planting a new tree and I 'let' him choose the dogwood he's been wanting, and seeing how today being windy threw down some more twigs and a small branch, he finally agreed it should come down. Yay! I've been wanting it down since our neighbor's big tree fell on our house 4 years ago. This tree is so huge it pushed the sidewalk up with its roots and we had the roots cut back and new sidewalk poured when I was on maternity leave with ds20. Gradually it pushed it up again. This time was only a half slab so dh did it himself. I'm afraid to keep cutting roots back because if that were to cause the tree to weaken there, and making it easier to fall on our house it would go right across our bed. If it fell away from our house, it would hit the neighbor across the street and they have little kids in front bedrooms. Forget it. We don't need this stress.

I'm still not back to work FT but gradually our breast imaging center is ramping up volume. Instead of having 8 techs forced to be off every day, we are down to 2 and lucky me gets to be one of them. I like having some time to relax but looking forward to things feeling normal again.

I looked into enrolling in a clinical trial for a COVID vaccine just to finally stop worrying about it and be able to hug my father and visit him more often but hypertension excludes me and dh. Darn it. I would have gladly driven to Baltimore for that. Maybe Phase 3 trials will incorporate a wider range than just 'healthy people'.
