Food supply chain is breaking

I stocked up on a few packs of bacon and sausage, but I tend to agree with the other poster who said they are done with panic. We have enough food to last a while. What we have may not be our first choice, but we aren’t going to starve.

it might do us (my family) good to learn to do without our “first choice” sometimes and be content and thankful for what we do have.

Since my husband and I grew up in families that were beyond broke, we have always been accustomed to the tricks of stretching food items to the max. When I told my daughter about ketchup sandwiches, she looked horrified.

For those with freezers, do you have a generator too? That is a lot of food going bad if you lose power and don’t have a way to power the freezer.

I dont have a freezer, but ive also never in my life experienced a power outage so long that food in a freezer would defrost if left closed. I know it can happen in hurricane prone areas but is it really a statistically likely concern in most parts of the country?

Many of our restaurants are doing delivery and curbside pickup. I just saw an add for them selling groceries for pick up. I think it's for restaurant sized packs of meat and veggies. Many of the local farms and butchers that mainly supply to the restaurants have been offering pre-made and custom boxes of meats and produce as well. More expensive than the regular grocer, but they have lots of stock because the restaurant orders are smaller/ less frequent.

The reason I was asking is because we have....several times and wound up getting a generator as a result. We have lost power numerous times for days at a time as well as a couple times that lasted over a week. I am also not in a hurricane area (central Massachusetts), so it can definitely happen. Now we are thinking of getting an extra freezer so that is why I thought to ask.

Electricity outages are so rare on my end that it makes the national news when it happens, LOL. I would hope if there is ever another blackout it would be in the late summer when historically my freezer is almost empty and electricity demand is high.

Not so for my elder sister who lives in the 'burbs. She purchased a generation system powerful enough to keep all her kitchen appliances functioning (but she never turns the dishwasher on during outages because she lives in fear it'll out the system 🤷‍♀️) . Good thing since she's the one taking delivery on the dozen whole chickens I ordered. They'll be divided between 3 of us (the 4th sister lives too far away) but elder sister is the only one of us with a full sized chest freezer.

Hmmmmm.. imho, nothing like a company that allegedly has issues ..to start panicking people. Ugh,! I’m so troubled by all these articles and journalists Stating “facts”. Not sure what to believe anymore. Is Tyson the only one yelling the sky is falling?
And Covid..
I would like to know the numbers of those that Were treated and released,( yippee). those that Actually passed from covid, versus what’s on the ME’s report.
I’ve heard and read about some pork plants having issues .. now the Broken food chain ..panic. Makes one want to scream

Yes - live in the boonies and power outages mean no running water, so almost everyone here has at least a small generator.

In the 19 years we have lived in AZ we have never lost power, but we made the decision in the last couple of weeks to install a transfer switch and buy a generator because it would we a terrible tragedy to lose all our food given the current circumstances.

We have considered a generator for years, but the pandemic pushed us to finally have one installed. For the cost of the generator/installation of the generator - it seemed like a small price for some insurance and peace of mind.

I assume by your screen name you living in NYC. A backup generator isn't really conducive for an apartment type living environment.

And for the record, I’ll buy anything other than Tyson now. He wants to take out an ad to cause panic rather than implement new procedures at his plants? There have been a lot of essential places that have had positive cases. They cleaned them, reopened them and adjusted procedures. Apparently that isn’t possible at Tyson.

Our power went out once many years ago for a few hours when it was stocked with liquid gold (aka breast milk). I was really sweating that one, and so grateful when it came back on that night.

The one time we lost our fridge/freezer contents was after an ice storm when it was off for 4 days. I get a little twitchy any time there's ice in the forecast now. And that was 18 years ago.

If our state runs out of meats and dairy and vegetables, well the rest of the country is in trouble. We live in a very insulated area. Our town owns the power plant. We have multiple meat and poultry packing plants within 1 hour of us. We have cattle ranches, pig farms, fish ranches, vegetable farms, poultry farms, dairy farms, all within 1 hour of us. Pizza factories, tortilla factories, grain facilities, cereal factories, all within the state. I think that people should calm down and just buy regular quantities. The supply chain will be fine.

We have a generator that can run the essential appliances. The freezer could go multiple days without anything thawing though, as long as we don't open it. We have a 23 cubic foot upright freezer in the basement that we've had for several years. I had originally purchased it because my dogs (who are both now deceased) were on a prey model raw diet and I bought their food in bulk from a supplier and so that's what 90% of the freezer space was for. They're gone now, but I have 3 kids and we stock the freezer based on sales patterns from various stores. Also once a year we split a cow with some of our family members and that all gets stored down there too. It's definitely been a huge help because my upstairs fridge is a side-by-side and I hate the weird skinny freezer where everything either falls out or gets forgotten because I can't see what's in the back.
