Marathon Weekend 2021

I’m surprised they’re opening Marathon Weekend registration with this much uncertainty. I guess they just figure that they might as well be the ones drawing interest on all those entry fees, even if they have to eventually refund them.

Marathon weekend is in January. if that dosn't happen it means a lot of other races didn't happen like boston and new york which are currenly still scheduled..

It’s going to be very interesting to see how those races are handled.

January? Really?

There’s a big difference between rescheduled (Boston) and long-since registered (NYC) races remaining on the calendar for now and opening up a brand new registration to take people’s money before the pandemic has peaked, much less tailed off to the point that restrictions are being lifted and there’s an inkling of what post-peak pre-vaccine life is going to be. It seems a bit premature to open registration at this point, to me.

My point is that if it isn't possible to do a race in January then races already on the calendaer in september and november can't happen either and so far those are still planning to take place.

Not surprised though that they are taking advantage of people being home for the virtuals though.

You don’t see a difference between allowing a rescheduled race and a race that was registered for prior to the pandemic blowing up to remain on the calendar for now as being any different than deliberately starting a brand new registration process with all the uncertainty right now?

Not really. Unless you know you are not having it you still have to plan for it and people who are not sure can always decide to wait to register if they want.

Having a registration date on the calendar is a great thing to see right now, when we are still in a dark tunnel with no clear end in sight. They can always push the date back if things are getting worse rather than better, but this is a ray of hope during difficult times. FWIW - they went ahead w/ W&D registration just when this whole Covid thing was escalating, so having MW registration go ahead makes sense.

I do agree, and I admit I’m a cynic and a pessimist. I’m having trouble understanding why companies aren’t more cautious, and the only explanation is that the alternative is too much to bear (lost jobs, bankruptcy). A lot of places are trying to stay relevant by operating under a best case scenario.

SAFD: Working from home has been fine...although I think it has actually been more work than had I been at work.. Running has generally been pretty good because at least working at home has allowed a little more flexibility in my schedule, which allows me to run at times when I will not likely see many, if any, people. But, this is getting old and each day I think I am realizing this thing might be with us longer than I thought.

So, I am tentatively excited about the marathon weekend. Not sure yet if I am going to sign up for just the marathon, Goofy, or Dopey. I am thinking probably Goofy. I did Dopey this year and that was a whole lot of days to get up that early. I would rather do two days of running and then spend most of the week after at the parks. If I do Dopey, I will likely need to leave right after.

I'm not sure what date POT was through earlier (in the past years it was usually the first or second weekend of October - near Chicago, but maybe right before), but now it is October 20th. So maybe they are giving a little extra time in the fall for POT races.

ETA: Someone may have already mentioned this. I can't remember at the moment.

If memory serves me correct, the date has now changed three times. It was originally the end of September 2020, then October 6th, and now October 20th. It was October 6th on April 2nd when the marathon POT cutoff changed to 5hrs.

Agreed. 100%. I work in a capacity that I'm getting some pretty "inside baseball" info about how things are going and are likely to go here in FL as far as business and tourism is concerned and what I'm hearing is that we are not likely to see anything back to near "normal" for at least a year from now. Trust me - Disney knows this and has even more info and data than I get at my level. So I'm genuinely shocked to see them open registration so early.

At a personal level, I was really hoping for a longer delay so I don't have to add that difficult decision to my already too-long list of Things I Need to Fret About. I mean, registering for a Disney race ranks below Will I Still Be Employed by January? and How Long Can My High-Risk Household Go Without Accidentally Being Exposed To The Virus?, but adding anything to the mix right now is stressful lol! I'm torn between just forking over the Dopey registration and viewing it as a short-term, interest-free loan to keep rD propped up, figuring if the race gets canceled I'll get my money back, or assuming Dopey won't sell out so I should wait until at least July to see if we have more data to draw from. I guess my biggest fear is that I register, the race goes on, but it's still too unsafe for me to participate and I wind up in the hole for a lot of money.

In general, I just cannot see how rD manages 20,000+ runners when there is still no vaccine available. I mean, can you imagine the PR fallout if 10,000 runners go home infected???

After thinking about this for the last several weeks.....seems like years, we'll be sitting the 2021 marathon weekend out. We've been participating since 2006 and were going to introduce our nieces to the RunDisney events in 2021 but think that would be better served for 2022. I just think there's too much uncertainty and headwinds to navigate in seeing how this will be run [pun intended] and probably not the best time for an introduction race event for my nieces.

I know a lot can change between now and then with hopefully positive experiences from other large events and races, but feel that all of the factors and complexity around COVID-19 will impact the experience that we're use to for race weekend. For those of you participating, I wish you luck in training and truly hope that RunDisney can pull this off. While not participating in the actual running, we will be keeping our BCV resort reservation and will be cheering you on from the various vantage points around the Epcot resorts during the 10K and full marathon. Not sure if I'll be masked or not at this point! I'll see everyone on the 2022 Marathon Weekend thread!

Don’t see a problem with registration reopening. If you push that back due to uncertainty of it going ahead, by that you logic you’d also have to prevent anyone from making future bookings. No firm (Especially Disney) is going to turn down revenue for the next FY for what’s going on at the moment. If they do, they’ll only exasperate their cash flow issues. Also I gives us a small light at the end of the tunnel (length unknown!) to work towards :thumbsup2

Thinking out loud...

If they require a PoT by October 20th, what happens if there are no other official race before Marathon weekend to use ?

Can you use 2020's Marathon Weekend times as your PoT for Jan 2021?

Yes the PoT window is on the website. You should be able to use 2019 races as well.

Where would it be on the website? I can't find it. The only corral-worthy half marathon time I have right now is from March 2019 so I am hoping that will work since I probably won't get a chance to race anytime soon!
