On a non-puzzle topic, I will add that in some situations, a $100 application can be a great investment in the possibility of merit aid. Granted, this probably doesn't apply to most engineering schools which I think are usually found at large universities, but for those looking at liberal arts colleges, the awarding of financial aid can vary wildly from school to school (even those that you think would be comparable in terms of competitiveness). Having steered four kids through the college application process, every successive kid applied to more schools, because of the variances in merit aid packages. Yes, it was hard to get over the initial cost but it was worth it to have the additional options when they had to make a final decision.

I feel like I’m posting just stuff that is not credit card related lately, but I just want to second this. When my daughter was looking at colleges, we found a guidebook that gave the average percent of need met. I can’t remember the title....maybe it was Best Northeastern Colleges or something like that. Anyhow, I’m sure you can find out that info with a little research, but this book made it super easy. It was amazing the difference that made. She had a full tuition scholarship to our state university, but they have a lot of fees and expensive room and board. She ended up at a much better fit for her (private school) for about the same cost, even though the “list price” was much higher.

Currently watching Bedknobs and Broomsticks with DD and she's loving it which makes me so happy, one of my favorites.

I love that movie! I remember watching it when I was very little, and then again when my DD was small. A Disney classic for sure!

Me too! I can’t stop crying today! I am an emotional wreck at the moment. I love teleworking but not so much with DS trying to do online school and driving me crazy and DH teleworking too. Not being able to escape the house. All of the canceled vacations and pretty sure my perfect 20th anniversary trip to return to Australia will be canceled for Aug. I am just over it!

I know how hard it is. :( I am so thankful that we are all ok today, but thinking about canceling all those reservations I worked so hard to get, stalking airlines when they released award seats, hotels, tour guides, etc. It's just depressing. I now use those stalking skills to find impossible to get grocery delivery slots, so I'm glad I learned them through travel hacking. Yet I wish I was working on something fun like that trip and not how to finally get bananas (this week's version of the thing I can't seem to find.)

While DD is making her second pan of quarantine brownies, I decided it was time to step on the scale. Still the same weight so YAY! I guess I'll be joining in the brownie eating later, lol :cool1:

Lucky! I stepped on the scale and it complained. :sad2: DD made a loaf of pumpkin bread today since we finished up all the brownies yesterday. I'm afraid I'm going to gain and gain and gain.

That looks like it's longer than a value room 😂 Who has a wall that big? Or the time to do all those pieces, that thing is huge.
I really want it. I roughly measured it and if we wrap it, we do have space in the living room. It would be on three walls. My LR is open to upstairs with a half wall up there on two sides of the LR and I think it would just fit. I'm not sure if I accurately measured the height of it though. I just can't quite seem to convince my husband.

We cancelled our August trip :( It was free (no $ to redeposit miles) and Hilton/Hyatt were easy too. We will go up via car when GMILs memorial is and length of stay will depend on how the world is at that point. I’m sad but I couldn’t pass up free cancellation plus this trip had a lot of crowded spaces (hershey, aquarium, zoo, beach) and I don’t think *we* (as in our family) will be ready for that or flying by August.

Is anyone holding off booking 2021 trips? I was thinking we may travel more that year with these extra miles now but feel too unsettled to consider booking.

We have a store called The Worlds Largest Candy Store and they have one on their outside wall. It’s amazing but I can’t imagine having it in my house! Dh would never 😜

Here's what I did today... a whole lot of nothing. Mexican from the local place (we get takeout once a week but it is a hassle of cleaning the packaging, plating, reheating, 409ing the countertop before setting the plates down to eat, etc) - took a walk, did laundry, a 2 hour nap. I did Preen the landscape and DH fertilized the yard.

I'm so bloody bored.

A friend shared this link with me for a no-sew option. It's even easier than the last one I posted about.

I just tried this and it really is easy. I don’t have hair ties or bandanas so I used large rubber bands and some cloth napkins that I had in the linen closet but haven’t used in years. This morning DS and I wrapped wool scarves around our faces when we went to Safeway. It was unbearably warm and we kept getting fuzz in our mouths. We raced though our shopping in record time just so we could take off those scarves.

They all have net price calculators online now. We have found them to be very accurate for financial aid at each school. It is quite a difference in how much you can get from different schools. The problem I have is that this is really only for Freshman year and doesn’t reflect if a school might try to lure you in and then after first year not offer as much. One of the schools DD was looking at gave her a pretty good package but we found many reviews that said the after Freshman year the grant part of the aid would go down and the loan part would increase.

Just saw that on a national news broadcast (which I'm afraid to name, now), but using rubber bands. I thought the hair ties (which I don't have) and sock elastic was an improvement. Easier on the ears, I figure. Thanks!

Oh, and even better idea. A friend of mine was making masks for her son to wear at work (as a nurse). She offered to make some for my parents (she lives in my hometown) and me. I said take care of your son and his team, then my parents (who are too old to tolerate this).

Anyway, she is sewing a pouch into each mask, then inserts a cut piece of HEPA filter (which are readily available). She is a mechanical genius! Thought this might be worth it's weight in gold over the next few weeks!

I really want it too, but I think I would display each scene separately. I have a 3,000 piece puzzle that's framed in my office and I get a lot of comments on it. I'm sure we could do a 4,000 piece puzzle but I'm not sure I could put 10 4,000 piece puzzle all together.

So for the non-technologically sophisticated here (meaning me), what exactly is this? I had read that the fabric part of the mask helps protect others from you, but to protect yourself from others, you need to insert something, such as a piece of flexible plastic, in a pouch. I haven't heard about using a filter.

I saw instructions online somewhere yesterday on how to make those, looked like they used a coffee filter. I think given where her son works it makes sense but really I'm just using the mask for a little extra when I have to be closer to someone like at check out. I still plan on staying way away from people. And also have them in case we do end up needing them so we can actually start going back out after lock down.

@havaneselover GT is a great school! It is an amazing deal if you live in GA, but I would think it could be expensive if coming from out of state. Let me know if you have any questions.

For all of you posting about puzzles, we love them and usually complete a 1,000 piece one in just a few days. We did a Ravensburger one this summer of Mona Lisa which was pretty much brown and we worked on the brown coffee table at Disney's HHI resort and took us a full 5 days. We finally separated out the pieces by shape and just had to try each piece until finding the one that fit. I was thankful to be done with that one.

Finally cleaned out my first closet since staying at home! Hopefully I can keep clean a few more. It is going to drive me crazy to have stuff stacked in the corner for donation.

On the cc front, I keep dragging my feet on applying for a CIP. No real reason, just haven't done it yet. We have a decent amount of URs and with cancelling our travel the amount keeps building. I know we will find a use for them once we are empty nesters, but I just need to get motivated.

I bought one of those "talking scales" that announces your weight. I stepped gingerly on it the first time, and it announced, "One at at time, please!"

Yes! Working today with family and friends to book a group rate on an Alaskan cruise in summer 2021. I'm less worried about catching something on the flight/cruise/train than I am about the economy and people's ability to pay a year from now. Fingers crossed!

I was pretty bored today, too. I can't complain too much because we have nice weather and we're both at home healthy. We played way too many video games yesterday and today. It's fun though! I did make myself workout today doing abs and cardio so there's that. I also put away the dishes and loaded new ones into the dishwasher and watered our plants. I felt really tired all day though. I think a big thing for me is forcing myself to shower and get ready for the day so I don't feel so droopy.

I was just thinking about posting something like this. Does anyone else think 2020 may be a total travel loss? Our next planned vacation is to Whistler B.C. in mid July. I think about the odds of that trip happening daily. So I’m curious as to what others are thinking, and your hopes in terms of when we may get back to traveling. Do you think September-December is possible? We’re postponing our Disneyland trip to December, but some days I wonder if that is even possible. Would love to hear your thoughts about your upcoming travels.

we are keeping our traveling spirits up by talking about an Italy trip summer 2021. Today, I roughly distributed it 3 nights Venice, 6 nights Tuscany (2 of those in Florence), 6 nights Rome (maybe 2 out of Rome). We spent 3 weeks in Italy for our honeymoon and it just wasn’t enough but neither of us can take that time anymore. It would be for my sons HS graduation. Oh! And it would be our 20th anniversary. Just realized that.

For this summer, I don’t know how we will feel about planes or even hotels. I know we will stay domestic (it was our plan anyways) but comfort with flying will dictate. I had been getting excited about flying to Chicago, road tripping to New Orleans, flying home but I can’t even think about short term plans. We just need to get through the immediate situation.
