I think I've seen this discussed before, how many times do you need to use a SW CP for it to be "worth it"?
That is a crazy loaded question...You ask it to 50 churners, you might get 50 different answers.

Some food for thought:
  • To earn a CP you have to earn 110,000 SW points. Even if you NEVER used the CP, the 110k points is worth > $1,600 in flights for one person. They don't expire for 2 years after earning them AND they're easy to keep active by simply earning 1 SW point in some fashion.
  • You could also just cash those points out for something like Amazon gift cards (I think that's still an option) and it's worth $1,100 that way...
  • I'm not saying it makes ANY sense to earn a CP and not use it, but the points themselves have A LOT of value. I'd say to pursue a CP you have to at LEAST be using it once...otherwise, there are likely better card options out there for you.
  • Every time you use the CP you are either saving (a) the points value or (b) the cash value of the flight you took. So thus, the more often you use it the more value you'll get.
  • So if you used it 3 times on $200 Round Trip Flights you saved $600 OR $600 worth of points
  • BUT let's say you just used it once but that happened to be an $800 round trip flight at Christmas. Well now your CP was worth $800 (or $800 in points)
  • Depending on when you earn this, you can have it for up to 23 months so that's a lot of time to allow for flights. I think most people who get it are flying at least 3-4 times when they have it.
  • The good news is those 110k SW points don't need to be used during that time period so even if you don't use the CP a lot you'll still have all of the leftover points for future free flights!
So as you can see - there are potentially too many variables to answer this question in a vacuum. I would think of the bare minimum that you think you would use it and what those flights would cost and that might help you understand what it would be worth to you. Feel free to share that here too if you want some additional critique, but without that info I'm taking a stab in the dark.

:D

i have one but may not ever use it. wanted a stock of sw points and had almost none so got a cc for the bonus. decided to get a business card also, because why not. so now have had cp for most of the year but haven't been able to use it this year at all. maybe next year. did not cost me anything more that the annual fee and doing the msr.

What's the time needed between SW card apps when going for a CP the second time around? Four years? Trying to decide if the 80k sign up would work better for us, or have dh go for the CP when mine expires in 2020.

It’s hard to say how times since the pricing is not consistent. If I’m flying to PHX from BWI and is typically $250 flight or BWI to MCO which is $100 or BWI to BOS for $69 or BWI to Punta Cana which is $359.....All I know is that over 2 years we definitely make out at our house but we do a lot of US and Caribbean flights and BWI is a hub for SW.

Worth is probably going to depend on opportunity cost if you currently have nothing planned, and actual cost if you do.

I went for the CP because we had 1 flight planned and potentially a 2nd flight. At the moment we've saved a whopping 13k SW RR points for our planned (and completed) flight. In a vacuum that's probably not much, but I didn't really have much opportunity cost by doing it. I didn't forgo any other CC's that I was planning in order to do it and I wanted to replenish our SW stash anyway. Potentially heading to WDW around Easter to join BIL's family became a lot more palatable only shelling out for one ticket instead of two. (OMG Easter airfare is crazy next year. I've flown around Easter before but I don't recall it being this bad. I guess I was going to way, way less popular destinations...) And despite going at the 2nd highest cost season, hubby is still entertaining the trip.

If you have actual plans, I'd probably compare what would you do with that spend instead and see which gets you more bang for the buck - saving one RT airfare each trip or whatever the other option is (hotel nights, travel erased, etc). Worth is going to be different for each traveler.

I thought the SW cards were 24 months.
From the Chase website: This product is available to you if you do not have a current Southwest Rapid Rewards® Credit Card and have not received a new Cardmember bonus within the last 24 months. This does not apply to Business Card and Employee Credit Card products.

Does anyone else find that they still strictly use some of their store cards with certain retailers? I always use Target, Macy's, and Kohl's.
I just recently applied for a Nordstrom's card. I resisted for a looooong time but I analyzed the benefits against what I was getting point wise and it just made since (plus I wasn't in the process of making MS). I do not regret it at all. I really like it. That's the only store cc I have.

Be careful, you might just decide to travel more due to the CP😁. That is where I am. I normally only take one family trip a year but with the CP and points, I will have flown 3 times this year. Leaving Thu for a weekend in Orlando. Without CP, I might not have done this. It is easy when it only costs $22.40 to fly two people roundtrip!

Slow day on the r/churning discussion thread but there was this uhhh gem below... I do NOT understand how any human would find this acceptable. Perhaps I think too much of our human race...

WARNING: Don't read this one while eating your breakfast...

Ok clearly I don’t even need to read this to know it’s nasty. DH uses the hotel products but I always bring my own for me and DS (which is funny bc at home DH uses hypoallergenic stuff for his eczema). I’ve used a few neutrogena products (don’t even recall who uses them) but generally dislike the scented/perfumed products. All mine are scent free. Now for sure I won’t be using hotel products

I know some people don’t stray from this thread on the DIS - we obviously were following the Skyliner issue on Saturday night:

Interesting info from a WDWmagic poster named GymleaderPhil...
>>>>>>>>>
Here’s what I can confirm after speaking with a close source:

Shortly after the Skyliner stopped due to the incident at the station, a guest or someone else onboard with them in one of the vehicles called 911. The guest was patched through to Reedy Creek as they were claustrophobic, hyperventilating, and had a history of seizures in the past. The maintenance team that was dispatched to assess what happened was stopped from doing any work until the guest was emergency evacuated as a result of emergency services in the ride path. Reedy Creek had major challenges locating the specific Guest since the vehicle identification number is only printed on the side of each cabin - not on the bottom. The vehicle itself was in a position that obstructed the view of the number as well as the low light conditions. Reportedly the operators also do not have a system in place to determine how many guests are onboard or if the vehicle is occupied at all.
As a result of the delayed evacuation, other guests on board were overloading the emergency call button as well as the 911 operator if they had cell phones. My source is unsure how many other vehicles were evacuated by Reedy Creek, but I’m sure that each minute they were up there and seen doing so elicited more responses from other guests that may not have necessarily required it. People who were in no physical danger - just the many who were exhausted, hot, scared, hungry, needed a restroom, and some who did not speak English.
Once the maintenance team resolved the issue and deemed it safe to do so, they slowly cycled out the Skyliner as this is the most efficient way to get people off any ride.
From my source, it’s been a shared that the emergency kits on board some of the vehicles were previously opened or taken by guests earlier in the day who knew of their existence. Disney would have no way of knowing as It would be an operational nightmare to continuously check the contents of each vehicle throughout the day. They also would have had to come up with some way of locking them that did not impede proper usage. If the kits were not tampered with, they often did not have enough to supply the entire cabin.

I just need some quick reassurance prior to finally booking our Australia flights for next year :scared:

  • I can book both of us through my United account, correct?
  • UR transfer to United happens right away, correct?
So I should
  1. Transfer URs from dh to me
  2. Find our flights online
  3. Transfer the pooled URs to my United account
  4. Book the flights (which will most likely be on Air Canada bc the good United availability from PHL/EWR is pretty much nil for Aug and early Sept 2020, so I doubt it will change much for mid to late Sept)
:thanks:

Looks right to me. Good luck!

Crazy observation - the r/churning Daily Discussion thread has generated only 59 comments on a non-holiday Fall Monday as we near the end of the work day on the east coast. It definitely feels like churning is dying down a bit. Or perhaps people are moving into other groups away from that mainstream reddit sub. (Or both??)

I'm glad we have OUR community here where while churning is the bond that brings us together, we also talk about other things as well and keep that community feel going even when churning news is slow. :D :D

Really the churning subreddit is boring and kinda hostile. Not much chitchat allowed and people downvote galore. I've been liking this board so much more!

Ok, so since my travel eyes have been opened by all of you lovely people my plans just keep changing 😂.

As of today it looks like we will be going to DC in the spring and WDW in the fall of 2020. 2021 plans include Italy and possibly one smaller trip. We have no problems meeting MSRs sadly (and yes paying them off every month). It's been a year since we started and we took it slow but I think it's time to ramp up some.

Goal #1 is our Italy flights. Really thinking Delta for those so I may be wanting Delta points soon.

For DC in the spring we will fly there with a credit from Alaska, was thinking SW home if we had points and CPs so that we would not need to dip into URs.

Could use SW points to WDW in November. SW doesn't offer nonstop for us there but again with points and CP it would be worth it for us to have a stop.

Could also use SW to position to the East Coast for Italy.

Keeping in mind though I'm buying tickets for 7 sometimes 8. I am 1/24, DH is 5/24 with two dropping off in the next month or so.

We could both go for a CP. 2 companion fares and 220,000 points sounds nice. Or we could both go for a CIP. I'm not sure which way is in our favor at this point.

2 years from when you received the bonus for the same card.

Well that's great! So basically a few months after my CP expires I can go for it again. I guess I had it in my mind that changed awhile back and you couldn't get them concurrently anymore.
