Back from our final Illuminations viewing trip. Hopefully I didn’t miss anything exciting 😀. I was denied for the Barclays Hawaiian Biz. No letter yet so I have no idea why. Would it be dumb to try for the personal after being denied for the biz?

WWYD? Thought I'd check with the experts...

I'm only working on a $5k CIP spend right now. I have to pay the painter and designer (total almost $5k). Both take Venmo. Eat the fee and knock out the MSR? Or just pay via personal check? There's no problem meeting spend organically in 3 months. I'm pretty sure we've got a lot more expenses coming.

Also, I got a weird call from Amex today wanting to talk about my business. She said she reviewed my biz plat account and wanted to discuss ways to optimize my benefits. Anyone else get such a call?

We loved Marriott Lakeshore Reserve...beautiful resort and pool....it was about 15 minutes from Disney so not as close as other properties

One week from tomorrow we will be at Lakeshore Reserve for 13 days. There will be 9 of us in a 3BR townhouse. We have 8 park days and 5 resort days. My BFF has been taking each of her grandchildren for “their” Disney trip. We have done 8 trips together so far. I plan she cooks, we travel well together.

If I didn't need the points right away to get something booked, I personally would not pay a fee to get them sooner if I knew I would meet the spend organically later.

I'd rather not pay the fee if I didn't need to. Are you in a hurry to get another card? Maybe it's worth it if you are, but in general we are using organic spend to hit those MSRs. My DD did use a bit of Venmo, but it's because she couldn't meet the MRS organically.

I use YNAB, others use Mint or other free budget programs from their banks. I started using YNAB because I like the way it handles credit card transactions - my free budget program from my bank always double counted all my spending, once as a purchase and once as paying off the credit card. Also helps track the cards I have and when payments are due - couldn't keep all that straight without it.

I also like the way the actual budgeting part works, and it has helped me identify areas where we were spending too much money (other than moving money around so that bills got paid and everything else went into savings, I was not systematic about budgeting at all pre-YNAB). Anyway, things are definitely a lot more complicated when you are juggling multiple cards, esp. if you start buying gift cards etc. YNAB does cost money, but I don't think I could play this game without it.
I have to explore this with DH. The "moving money around so that bills got paid and everything else went into savings" plan is what we have been doing for years. Not very effective, LOL

Soooooo... I just applied for SW Biz performance for P2 and it went pending. I checked my email and found a new message from Chase. I think I put the wrong email address on the app. Am I screwed or is there something I can do?

:offtopic:

DH and I watched the new ABC show Stumptown with Cobie Smulders from How I Met Your Mother. First two episodes were really good. We’re looking forward to watching next week.

And did anyone catch Modern Family this week? The refrigerator scenes were hilarious. We both laughed out loud a few times.
Yes! I thought Stumptown was going to be silly, but it is my favorite new 60 minute show that premiered this year. Great music too!!

I also enjoyed Modern Family. It has been a favorite for a long time, but the past few seasons weren't as funny to me. This last one has been great so far! Jay revealing he wanted to be a dancer to the fridge was priceless.
Just finished watching Modern Family and we thought "Bridgette" was hilarious. I want a fridge who encourages drinking martinis!

Living about 30 miles from Portland, of course we have to watch Stumptown. I have the two episodes on the DVR and with your recommendations I am anxious to watch them. But it will have to be after the Seahawks game!

Well that is good news. Now I can sleep tonight. I did call to check but no news yet. I’ll probably call about 20 times tomorrow. Thanks!
Wait - the automated status line said nothing as in the app didn’t register? Or what was the message? There should be some news at this point :D

30 days or 2 weeks would sound good.

Oh. Sorry for the confusion. It says 30 days. That’s what I meant by no news. Should have been more accurate in my post. Hoping it changes to 2 weeks soon !

Mine said nothing, nothing at all, every time I called. After I typed in my SS# it just said it was wrong. I eventually did get approved, though, but it made for some anxious days.

Thanks! I knew that I shouldn't pay the fee, especially since I can meet the spend organically and don't need the points immediately. We've had so much expenses lately, all requiring checks only that it felt nice to be able to charge something. Thanks for talking sense into me!

Barclays denied my match  It's "just" 10K but I want my 10K.

I only tried via SM, though. I'll call them later & see if I get anywhere.

Bummer. I've read that Barclays doesn't do matches; they didn't match DH's AAviator when he got it a couple years ago. Good luck if you call them!

Oh wait, I'm remembering wrong! I think they'll match if it's been less than 30? 45? days since you applied with a lower offer. Is that what you mean, or is it the 10K for adding an employee you're talking about?

On a mobile device or laptop? I have tried multiple times on my iPad but find nothing. I find a screen that says book your free night or something like that but then it just takes me to a regular booking screen. I have already booked with points but it’s a cat 4 so the certificate should apply.
ETA if I try only 1 night I do see an option for free night but not for 2 nights even though I had enough points plus free night.

It looks like it has to be 2 separate functions.
I booked mine as a separate night and booked 2 points nights together for 3 nights for next summer. I haven't had a lot of luck calling the main number - they sort of defer to the hotel you are booking. The hotel has combined my nights into 1 stay when I've checked in. I've never actually called the hotel directly, but then what I've been doing has worked.

In using free nights with most hotels, I've found that usually they are stand alone and I have to do cash, points rooms on a separate ticket. That is probably what I'd want anyway in case of changes down the road. I have seven yearly free nights, Marriott, IHG, Hyatt, plus Radisson points that I juggle, along with DVC points.
