Disney Skyliner (Gondola Transportation System) Read Post 1 Now Open!

Do we beat him with slide rulers and non-graphing calculators?

so unrelated to this thread, but Disney related and I think a fun story ....

When I was in college the mascot for our University was The Engineers. One spring break a group of us came down to Florida and one stop was at Pleasure Island and specifically for the Adventurer's Club. One of the CMs working there I guess knew that was our mascot and when she found out where we were from she kept yelling to other CMs - "watch out, or they will come at you with their slide rules!!!'

I miss the Adventurer's Club

This was probably answered in the previous 458 pages, but ....

Is it necessary to switch gondolas?
How does your gondola know where you want to get off?

Yes, you have to get off. Riviera is the only station where you can stay on the gondola and "pass through" to Epcot or to CBR, depending on which direction you're heading.

In my day it was an abacus

I just rode the skyliner. All 3 lines in both directions.

First impression is this will be a very good addition. They are smooth, fast, convenient, and offer great views. Only once did we find a line long enough to time the wait. The queue to Epcot from CB filled up at one point. It took less than 2 minutes to cycle everyone in. This was also the only time we were put in a car with others.

Unless you have no one behind you I doubt you have much of a choice, but I would recommend getting a gondola without characters on it. The view is much better. And you can’t really tell which car you are in once you board anyway. So they characters are really only good for seeing from outside.

The most important thing... the heat. We rode around 5:00 and it was sunny and very hot outside. The first ride from HS to CB was very comfortable. Lots of air coming through the vents. Some of the other rides we were not so lucky. I would think the movement of the gondolas would be what generate the wind, but the different amounts of airflow make me think you get more of a breeze going against the wind. Either way, you’re on there for such a short time I wouldn’t worry about it. It also is hot going through the stations

I did get a little Claustrophobic on the trip to Epcot. It’s by far the longest ride and we had 8 people in the gondola. AND it got stuck for about 3-5 minutes just before the world showcase station which gave us a good view at the Rat construction. But since we had characters on the gondola pictures didn’t turn out at all. Even
Getting stuck in the air it wasn’t miserably hot. If it had been 30 minutes though I’d probably be saying something else.

It’s comforting to know I’m not the only one on DISboards who knows what a slide rule and abacus are and what they’re used for.:)

Ok, so I've been watching the Day 1 (?) Skyliner videos, and I have a stupid question...
Do they not play a message when it temporarily stops?

I saw one where it slowed to a stop, paused for a full minute, and re-started, all with no audio.
Now, yes, I understand that the stop and start is really smooth, but something like "Hey, this is a temporary stop" would be OK.
Ya know, just like when the Ghosts are causing problems at the HM?

They did play a message when we stopped.

Good point. We heard the "The ride has stopped temporarily. Please remain seated." message an awful lot on PeopleMover.

In the Cory video there was a CM at the Riviera station letting folks know that it would slow down for a bit but that they were still moving. There did not seem to be any message about what appeared to be an expected, routine slow down at that point.

My CM daughter just Facetime'd me as she was riding the Gondola. I think I may have been more excited than her.

You didn’t go to Lehigh University, by any chance?

One of my kids has been asking to stay at AOA for the longest time. The skyliner might actually make that happen.

So we've settled the A/C and door width concerns and now people are wringing their hands that these are going to turn into sex dens?

It’s so misplaced. Clearly the teenagers will just spend their whole ride vaping instead ;)

Hmmm... that reminded me of our ski trip last winter at Whiteface mountain. We rode the gondola a few times, and more than once we noticed a very strong "skunky" smell... if you know what I mean. The windows were open and it was a cold windy day... but that stuff has such a strong smell.

I suspect the ski and snowboard crowd is more likely to partake than the typical Disney guest... but I would be surprised if this didn't happen from time to time. So, I wouldn't be worried about sex dens... but I would be a little worried you may get a "skunked" car on your return trip from the park :)
