The Running Thread - 2019

That lines up with my "back of the napkin" calculations. I looked at the last few years and the progression of the cutoff time and calculated that if the current trend in time improvements continued and was relatively linear, we should be looking at a cutoff this year somewhere around BQ - 1:23 or so. Definitely not a definitive number. Just an estimate. But I'm interested to see how close that calculation comes to reality.

Sounds very close to the number some people on letsrun came up with based on current acceptances, what they believe to be the acceptance cap, and rate of times under BQ/by second for those between 5 min to 0 min in the last few years. They stated BQ - 1:15 as their guess as of last night.

Is it easier to get a stationary bike at the gym? @DopeyBadger has recently been translating some of his running into biking for the same purpose of improving fitness and endurance. Although boredom is still a factor!
@sky13 if you do have access to a stationary bike, this is what I've learned from personal experience thus far.

1) Make sure you're doing a structured routine on the bike. I use TrainerRoad and highly recommend it. I've seen far better performance management/gains using a structured routine than simply getting on the bike and putting in time.

2) The effects on the heart are different between running and cycling. Running increase the size of the left ventricular which in turn increases stroke volume. Your heart can beat less and transport the same amount of blood/oxygen throughout the body (more efficient). It's a critical adaptation to becoming faster/maintaining running performance. I've seen personal evidence in my resting HR data and running Garmin VO2max data.

Evidenced in this graph which displays my running Garmin VO2max value (black line) and resting HR data (blue line):

View attachment 437141

In periods of high running activity, my resting HR falls. In periods of high cycling activity in the absence of running, my resting HR rises. It wasn't until running was added back in did my resting HR drop back down again. I believe this is be evidence of the increase in stroke volume and efficiency of the heart muscle.

3) From my personal data, it would appear the adding in cycling as a replacement of running in order to yield the same level of running performance would follow this formula for me:

Take normal amount of running
Subtract out the amount of running you can no longer do
In order to have the same level of fitness with run+bike+strength you need to do 2x the duration you use to run.

Example:

-I use to average 7 hours of running per week.
-I now average 4 hours of running per week.
-In order to have the same level of running fitness as when I did 7 hours of running per week, I now need to do 14 hours of run+cycle+strength. So that would work out to 4 hours running + 10 additional hours of structured cycling and strength work.

The succinct conclusion here is that running and cycling are not 1:1. A 60 min run can't be replaced by a 60 min cycle to yield similar running results over the long term.

Thanks both for the suggestion of cycling! I do have access to stationary bikes at the gym, but unfortunately they have the same issue as the gym treadmills (i.e. when weather is terrible, the bikes are as occupied as the treadmills).

Interesting reading though - thanks for that! It sounds like running is still the most efficient way of keeping up running fitness (as opposed to adding in cycling)? Though I guess the benefit of cycling is that it probably is less stressful on the feet/knees/etc...

But could you do both? Is the biggest issue that it's frowned upon to do a 60 min run on a treadmill? But 30 min on the treadmill is fine with everyone. Such that you could do 30 min on the treadmill and then 30 min on the bike? Or 30 min on the bike, 30 min on the treadmill, and then 30 more min on the bike (if time wasn't a constraint)?

I'd agree that with a fixed time limit 100% running will yield the optimal running performance in the absence of it causing injuries. Another benefit I've found from cycling is that the recovery timeline is much much faster than it is from running. A 120 min run and I can feel it the next day. A 120 min bike, and I could do another 120 min bike in less than 24 hours without much issue. So less wear and tear, but it takes a ton more time to get a body response from cycling than it does running. Seiler's paper on 80/20 (link) states that elite level athletes in different disciplines put in different amounts of training time per week. Runners are 10-15 hours, cyclists are 25-30 hours, and swimmers may be even higher. It's believed that cyclists and swimmers are more technical in repeating movements, whereas running is more load stress bearing. So this information makes sense with my feelings that I recover quicker from cycling and that my data show a 1:1 replacement of running from cycling does not yield equivalent running performance.

Lighthearted QOTD: Do you have a favorite piece of running gear that you will do whatever it takes to prolong its useful life? What have you done to keep it going?
ATTQOTD: It's not really a matter of keeping a favorite, but the fact that I refuse to throw away something that looks perfectly good... I have a very small head, apparently, and my favorite visors - Headsweats brand - fit just right when new. But their bands are elastic and not adjustable. And I live in FL: between heat, sun, sweat and needing to wash them after every use, the elastic gets stretched out and too loose to fit. Visor still looks new and works fine otherwise, so when it happens, I take a little tuck in the elastic and sew it to make it tighter.

Everything else is rolling along through years and years of use without issue, so no need to do anything to prolong use!

Sitting here darning a few holes in my running socks (that probably dates me right there) and I was wondering.....

The only thing I have at this point that I will rue the day when it wears out is a pair of Adidas 2011 Boston Marathon 3/4 tights. So far they are still going, but some of the trim stitching is falling out. I have already started looking for a suitable replacement.

I haven't been running THAT long yet. The item that I would say falls in this category is my 1.5L hydration vest. It's a specific CamelBak vest that I got in 2016. It's gotten a good amount of use and abuse, so the edges are starting to fray and chafe more than they used to.

However, when I looked to see if I could get a new one, that version has been "updated". I don't like how they've changed the pocket arrangement. So I stick with what I have. I use extra BodyGlide. I've been considering getting moleskin to put along the edges of the vest where the most issues occur.

@dis_or_dat did you get your acceptance? i know you were way under so you got in but was wondering how soon you got your notification. I looked at the BAA website and it sounds like they did have more qualifiers than they have spots, so i am still waiting. I am hoping to hear something by tomorrow, worse case i am thinking by wednesday. I am hoping I don't have to wait through the weekend.

I got my acceptance last week, very quick response! From what I’ve read everyone who applied this week (including 10+ min below the cut off) will receive their acceptances at the same time, probably next Wednesday.

I agree with everyone else, seems like the cut off will be less than 2 min. I think somewhere between 1-1:30. I have a good feeling about your chances! :)

This sounds incredibly frustrating. I hope the charity website is improved for the future as I do not see much ADA-like activity happening in Japan.

Yeah I realize that which is why I wanted to get it done sooner rather than later.

My source of frustration has moved to Berlin who I tried to contact about having foldable hiking poles on my person strapped into my two liter camelbak. The poles are a corrective means for my episodes. I was just told that they aren't allowed in the start area but I just checked the list of prohibited items and hiking poles aren't on the list (the reason I was contacting them was to try to have some clearance to avoid problems with security). Flag and banner poles are but last I checked hiking poles are neither of those things. Either way, I'm wishing I had realized that sooner since I think my best bet is to take them to the expo with me and take this up with race relations because I'm starting to have doubts whoever is in charge of the contact form even knows whats on their website. If the answer is still no, fine, maybe they'll let me use my cane. But the 'its a prohibited item' excuse doesn't match up with with the information I have.

I am not particularly fond of Berlin's handling of disabled athletes (I was told over the summer that if we don't have a chair we were out of luck, but after this set of events I'm questioning that too). But I really don't care when someone tries to BS me which is what it feels like is happening here.

Closest thing I can find is an issue with it being in my camelbak? Since apparently its supposed to be drinks only but last year they allowed food so that doesn't make sense either?

ETA: Okay so just taking it up at the expo now since the response I got falls under ‘so strange it’s actually kind of hilarious’. At the very least I want them to explain their logic behind the response.

I could probably do both in the gym to be honest! Will see how things go. Time is a bit of a constraint though so the efficiency of running appeals greatly. I definitely agree that cycling is a lot easier to recover from though!

@canglim52 did you get your acceptance?
Still waiting 🤞🏻🤞🏻

For my run this morning the Temp+DP was 138! WHAAA?!? A T+D in central FL below 140?!? I'm going to have to break out the long pants it's getting so cold! :P

@PrincessV , there might be some relief for us yet!
YES!!! My Feels Like was "only" 89* when I ran last night... what a difference 10* makes! I mean, yeah, it was still hot, but it took a full mile and a half before the first sweat bead rolled down my cheek, lol! I see a forecast low of 74 for tonight; I'm excited to run in the early morning chill :)

@Kerry1957 Still planning on running DoLittle on Sunday? If so, I'll aim to get there around 5:30am. Looks like there are 400 runners between all the different distances. I'll be wearing this in all likelihood. Come say hi if you see me!

Yes. I'll be there. As we discussed, I'm looking to maintain an easy/long run pace for my last long run before the marathon. I'll find you before the race, and if we both stick to our paces I'll see you again just as I finish mile 4 and you finish mile 8.

I'll probably be wearing this...

Hey everyone. Just checking in. I keep saying I will get back into my regular routine and be back here daily. Sadly life is way busier this year than expected. And, now that I can run I have even less time, which is a good problem to have. I’m slowing building mileage and getting faster at the same time. I am about a month in of pain free running so the stretching seems to have solved the issue. Glad everyone is doing well. I do read even though I can’t post as often as I used to.

One more thing. I saw the 1/2 is still open for January. I thought about running it since it’s been over a year since my last race. But Disney prices are ridiculous as usual. I went to my prior TA that I used to get RunDisney discounts through, as recently as the 2018 marathon. They no longer have them. Does anyone know of any deals or has Disney gotten rid of all deals for races now?

I'm holding out hope for a marathon discount offered during W&D. They offered one at Peachtree for the marathon and Challenges, but don't seem to offer anything for half.

I was more referring to room discounts. For 2018 I got a deal through MEI travel for $300/night for the Contemporary. The cheapest I can find this year is $170 for Sports which is crazy.

Disney stopped the big group rates this year. You won’t see general discounts until later this fall. Those will probably be the typical 15-30% off.

Hi everyone!
I have officially finished my first race! And I should be super ecstatic about it, but I'm not. If you'll allow me to vent for a minute...
It was a 5k, a big local race around here. I was on track to meet my goal time. And about 500m from the finish there was such a bottleneck that I literally came to a complete stop. It took over 7 minutes to cross the finish line from that point.
So I'm a little frustrated to say the least.
But all in all it was a beautiful day and I completed the race, so I am trying to be positive about it. Thanks for listening :)
