The Running Thread - 2019

@camaker forgot to ask how are those new pups doing? Need some cuteness updates.

The puppies are live wires! It’s crazy times around the house and they’re already 30lbs each. You can follow them on IG at thesydney_and_bellabulldogshow, too.

We actually have a cone of shame situation right now! They were playing in the backyard Friday afternoon when Sydney came up just dripping pools of blood onto the deck. She had completely ripped a nail out playing with Bella. I got her to the vet and this was the outcome:

We ended up replacing it with a donut because she kept digging the edge of the cone into the ground and tripping herself while walking. Honestly, I think the cone and bandage bother her more than the nail loss.

Sydney’s the calm one, though. Bella is just nuts!

Where are my fellow struggling Floridians? I have well and truly hit the wall and need a reminder that 1. heat stress is real and it's cumulative - and no, a drop in the heat index from 105 to 90 doesn't mean it's magically cool enough to feel any better, 2. that the heat really will break eventually, and 3. that this happens every year, and every year we get through it and see better times with less effort when it finally cools down. Because I keep telling myself these things and none of it matters: I am in misery down here, people!!!

I had a back-to-back weekend of 4.5 Sat and 12 Sunday. I did it all right: got out there long before sun-up, hydrated properly, electrolyted properly, slowed waaay down, aimed for shade wherever I could... and by mile 10 of my 12-er, I couldn't run more than 20 seconds at a time without feeling heat stress. I may need to not even look at HR for a while, because watching it keep going up and up in the heat, while my pace gets slower and slower, just stresses me out. I need a cold front STAT!

I don't know about you, but we have a cold front getting to us middle of this week in SE GA. Wed-Fri Lows in the mid 60s, with highs in the mid 80s

OMG enjoy every moment of that!!! Nothing here in West-Central FL: local weather person could only offer highs of 89 instead of 90 next week, lol!

I visited Mumbai, India last year, which has this huge smog dome over it. I was glad that I hadn't planned to try to run there, because it seems like it wouldn't have done my lungs any favors. So I'm sympathizing with your situation.

It seems to me like you need to safeguard your health first, because there will be more races later. You said that the treadmills at the gyms are busy. Do you have any facilities that have indoor tracks? In the US, some places have indoor tracks that are about 1/10 mile long...it's a lot of laps to get anywhere, but it might be better than nothing.

Thanks for the suggestion! Unfortunately no indoor tracks that I have access to here, as far as I know. Some schools might have small indoor halls but they wouldn't generally be open to the public due to security reasons. I think the school closest to me does have a hall that is occasionally rented out to the public - but I think it's not air-conditioned and so the air quality in the hall would be identical to the air quality outside of the hall.

Thankfully the air quality has gotten slightly better over the last day or so, and I managed to go for an easy 5k run outdoors today. I could still smell/see the haze, but at least it was tolerable (as opposed to a couple of days ago where even walking outdoors felt difficult).

Hopefully the air quality continues to improve and I can get back to regularly scheduled running!

I've been contemplating posting on this exact subject. I've been wondering if the heat does have a cumulative effect. At the beginning of summer (which happens in March now), it takes a couple of weeks to get heat acclimated and then I'm good. In previous years, I've ridden that until fall (which now happens in December). We still have 90s for next week and I think we hit 99-100 earlier this week.

This year, I just ran out of gas. It's mid-September and still hot as [insert curse word here]. Even my easy runs seem like death marches. It's like my body has said 'Enough'.

Does heat-acclimation have a shelf life?

The heat may be my fault since I challenged Mother Nature. (From a post in June.):
My attitude is: Bring it Mother Nature. You haven't killed me yet (although this can always be the year).

This is my first summer running through the whole summer, and while I wouldn't say I have run out of gas, I have noticed that while temps haven't budged much, the humidity has jumped around a bit the last couple weeks. After a few days with a drier heat, a high humidity day really takes it out of me. My average pace has been coming down from the worst of the summer temps, so I think trying too hard on a day that I should have gone slower is part of it tho.

Yes, that's it, exactly! I can only speak from personal experience, but even when I wasn't adding marathon training into my summers, I just feel chronically overheated every Sept. here in FL. It's like even if I'm shivering in my way-too-cold air conditioned office, I'm still feeling overheated on the inside: dull headache, worn out, no energy, feeling dehydrated, even while drinking plenty of water. I've always assumed it comes from no break in the heat for 6 months. But it also seems to be getting worse as I get older, so that's fun.

The freaky dry air has been doing a number on me, as my lungs get really wheezy in humidity lower than around 65%. So I think in my case, the drier air has maybe helped sweat do its thing more effectively, but I'm still slowed by not being able to breathe well. Add in ragweed pollen and Sept. is a hot mess all around.

Hey @OldSlowGoofyGuy.....that's exactly how I've felt most of the summer as well. And it's 92 degrees in Virginia right now. Yuck.

Answers to previous questions: I use Garmin to upload to Strava to track my activities. Also use Excel to keep my monthly mileage and race data. I've got all my medals but not all races offer medals so the spreadsheet is helpful.

I tried putting my phone in my shorts and it constantly pulls them down. I had an elastic belt for gels/keys that would keep it from falling but I lost it somehow. Now I use an armband for my phone but it's a pain to try and remove to take pictures and put it back. Guess that's better than having my shorts fall down, right?

I saw the predicted temps for when I wake up for the rest of this week and actually did a fist pump in excitement. Its supposed to be in the 60s and potentially 50s!

Pockets: I specifically look for running tights that have a zipper pocket in them. I got excited when I found a decent priced pair and ordered two. They do indeed have a pocket but it appears that I should be putting small pizza slices in them instead of my phone because that is how the pocket is shaped:confused3

I can cram my phone (without the case on) into them but it isn't easy zipping them up.

I've always gone for the biggest phone I can find, for the giant screen. It was never a problem until I started running - alas, active wear is not designed to fit phablets!

So sad the new Garmin still lacks phone function. :sad1:

Hi all- new to this group. I have done a ton of Run Disneys in the past incl challenges. I am not good at training- like at all. But I have committed to doing the *GASP* Dopey in Jan. How do you all stay motivated. I moved to Dallas last year and its so hot I have to do treadmill training. How do you all stay on track and motivated! I know there are a gazillion training plans out there so not looking for those- just the how to stay motivated and stick to a plan. Anyone else on the struggebus??

I’m new to this group too and the struggle is real! Just so much of life tries to get in the way, right? Anyhow my strategies: a) talking with fellow runners (in person or, on the DIS) and b) remembering how badly it feels to run a race underprepared. I personally can’t fake a half marathon (or even a 10k) so not a lot of wiggle room to skip runs. My problem this time around is all the other stuff - I’m not sleeping, eating or cross training like I should....
