Japan Trip Update/Report

Trip Report-Day 13

We woke up and checked out of our room around 9:50 am (right before check out lol). We waited at Kyoto station for about 2 hours before our Shinkansen left so we sat in the waiting room watching YouTube and listening to music. Our Shinkansen left at 12:32 pm. There was tons of coughing on the train so hopefully I don’t get sick. Finding the Keiyo line was easy enough and we headed to Maihama station.

We bought a 2 day monorail pass because we aren’t going to the parks until Tuesday. We took the monorail to the Hilton and checked in. The hotel is so close to bayside station. We booked a King Celebrio Ocean View room and the room is very big! There were some big stains on the white chair and blue couch in our room. I was able to wipe the chair off easily so they clearly just didn’t clean it. The view of the bay is gorgeous! We have a huge window overlooking it. The room itself looks pretty modern but just not cleaned well (I’m sure it gets used A LOT). There are lots of drawers and storage space. There’s a cool feature to play music through your phone into the bathtub!

We decided to go to Ikspiari for dinner and check out the Bon Voyage store. We ate dinner at Outback Steakhouse. I really wish you could tip in Japan because our server was probably the best server I’ve ever had. I had a sirloin with mashed potatoes, veggies, and Caesar salad and it was really good. Syth got a bacon burger that he said was also really good. He said he didn’t know he could miss eating a burger so much.

After dinner we wandered over to Bon Voyage. I had a whole list of merch I wanted to buy and I was actually able to get almost all of it there. The Duffy stuff I’ll have to get in disneysea. We spent a decent amount of money but I don’t regret any of it lol. Dh and I each got a passholder. I’ll include a picture on this post of everything we got. We each brought umbrellas but they’re both pretty crappy so we bought two new ones and they weren’t that expensive and say Tokyo Disney on them. Now we’re in our room watching Robin Hood the cartoon since neither of us remember seeing it.

Some things I’ve noticed: Our hotel has LOTS of westerners. There’s a huge group of young adults from a French sport college, but when we went to Ikspiari it was almost all Japanese. It’ll be interesting to see what the parks are like

I can’t believe our luck but it’s showing no rain for the next four days and the temps stay close to 70. It’s been raining consistently since we got here and it’s only 62 so it’s a cold rain. I’m very glad I bought sandals and the umbrella.

Trip Report-Day 14
I slept in this morning until about 10 am. Syth went down to breakfast without me at 9ish and said there was a huge line (people from that French college). He finally realized he could go around them to the priority line since we’re gold members with Hilton. We get breakfast free every morning with being gold but probably won’t use it every morning. We also realized there’s a fridge in our room but you have to pull really hard on the door for the cabinet to open.

We went to ikspiari to buy our park tickets at the ticket counter which was really easy to do and there was no line. We then ate lunch at a ramen place in the food court. We were going to go to a movie but it costs $17 which is way more than we would pay for a movie. Instead we rode the monorail around the whole loop and got to sit in the front where you can see out. That was fun and we consider it our first ride lol. We stopped at the Disneyland hotel to look at the lobby and it’s so pretty. We plan to look at the Mira costa during one of our disneysea days.

Other than that we really didn’t do anything today. I laid around in bed a lot trying to get rested for the next four days and didn’t feel like being out in the rain. I’ve been watching it out our window and I can barely see over the ocean because it’s so foggy. Syth and I went over our plans for tomorrow and what it’s gonna look like. We’ll be doing a lot of ibacktracking but I think it’ll be worth it to get everything done so our second day a disneysea will be more relaxing.

Yeah if I knew ahead of time my schedule and there was little chance of it changing I would reserve my seats at the airport when I land. The only ones you’ll need is tokyo-Kyoto, Kyoto-Tokyo, and Kyoto-hiroshima. All of the other ones you don’t need a seat reservation. We have the ordinary pass and the seats are great. I’m really not sure what the benefit of the green car would be. I guess it’s more comfortable but we were very comfortable in the ordinary cars.

No I couldn’t find any information about the closing of the rest house. I wasn’t even sure for a long time that the building was the rest house because it’s behind fences and has no signs on it, but it showed that it was on google maps.

We did go to the Hondori shopping district and it’s literally like every other shopping place in this area. They all get really repetitive. We did our shopping in Tokyo and aren’t big shoppers in the first place though. I’m saving all of my money for Disney. I’m not really buying souvenirs outside of Disney except I got some postcards for my relatives. Dh and I have been buying a lot of snacks to try too. We took the streetcar after leaving the Hondori street and they come pretty frequently. You just have to get on the right one because they don’t all go to the same place.

Thanks as always for all the info... So for our trip, I will need to make reservations. From Tokyo to Osaka - Osaka to Hiroshima Round trip day trip - Osaka to Tokyo, will I need to make reservation for Osaka to Kyoto Round trip... for a day trip?

My friend that is going in November their group is going to Hiroshima so I will get her to check it out, about the Rest House...

Good to know about the shopping district, will most likely be looking for a spot to eat...

I think that’s not possible. At least not at the Haneda JR office. When we exchanged our vouchers for the rail passes we tried to get our reservations, but they didn’t do it. They have a policy to only get you a reservation for trains within the next 3 days or so. I think they try to minimize wait times by not doing everyone’s whole trip worth of reservations.

We were at TDR first and just went to the Maihama station one day and took care of it there. We had a sheet of paper with all the trains with time and train number and from where to where written down and gave this to them. Was quick and easy.

Thats a great tip... Thanks...

You won’t need to reserve seats between Kyoto and Osaka. We actually just took the limited express which has some non reserved cars but you could take the special rapid which has no reserved seats. It really depends on your timing because they both run pretty frequently between the two.

Trip Report-Day 15
Syth went to breakfast again this morning and had an incident with the college group. He said there were about 50 in line and he went around into the priority line. The staff still let about half of them go before him. He said the staff couldn’t keep up and ran out of food because there were so many of them.

We got to the park close to 7:30 am and there were already quite a few people but we expected that. Everyone was sitting on the ground but we forgot our leisure sheet so we stood. They let us in right at 9 am. Here’s our step by step process:

  • Got a fp for journey (9:20-10:20)
  • Rode journey (walk on)
  • Rode 20,000 leagues under the sea (walk on)
  • Got a fp for tower of terror (11:25-12:25)
  • Bought caramel corn (I really liked it, syth said it was just okay)
  • Rode journey with our fp
  • Bought Chinese chili popcorn (syth really liked it, I didn’t try it)
  • Tried to get an Indiana Jones fp but couldn’t because of our tower of terror fp
  • Went to Arabian coast and rode sinbad (relaxing and awesome animatronics with really catchy songs, walk on)
  • Paid 500 yen to do the Arabian coast games. The person probably thought I was terrible but I was losing on purpose to get a pin lol. We chose the Chandu pin which is so cute
  • Rode the carousel (walk on)
  • Bought sea salt ice cream (syth liked it a lot, I thought it was just okay-tasted too much like a poptart)
  • Got a fp for Indiana jones but couldn’t use it because of our lunch reservation
  • Rode tower of terror with our fp (this took about 20 minutes even with a fp) We were able to keep the fp by just saying we wanted to keep it. They punch a hole in it so they know you’ve used it. Our favorite ride so far.
  • Got a fp for tower of terror because we liked it so much (5:55-6:55)
  • Went to our lunch at Magellan’s-12:20 pm
    • We asked about eating in the bookcase but they said it would be a 40 min wait. I did get a video of it closing though.
    • The portions here are small but the taste makes up for that. I had the potato soup, pork, and cheesecake and it was all very good. Syth had chicken soup, lobster, and cheesecake. He said the soup was like it was from a can, but the lobster was very good and had a good sauce.
    • They were really good about filling water and brought our courses quickly but not to rush us.
  • Fortress explorations (pretty fun, you have to shoot the cannons lol)
  • Watched tanabata greetings from the top of the fortress. It was decent but I wouldn’t wait long to watch it. We had no one around us up there which was nice
  • Got a fp for Nemo (2:50-3:50)
  • Rode aquatopia (15 min wait)
  • Watched a marching band and they were so fun! They played Beatles songs first and then asked people for a Disney movie and played a snippet from it.
  • Rode Nemo with our fp (super cute! People will think we’re crazy but we both liked this more than journey, it had a star tours feel to it)
  • Went to the Venetian gondolas (20 min wait)-these were really fun and the guy on our boat was a great singer!
  • Went to an atm to get some yen out. The popcorn and drink carts only take cash.
  • We tried to go into Mira costa but they said we needed to be checking in.
  • Checked out the Mcduck store for Duffy’s Sunny Fun merch. I didn’t buy anything then because it was supposed to rain later.
  • Bought alien mochi by the SS Columbia-it was okay but I wouldn’t buy it again. I liked he strawberry flavor the best
  • Made wishes at the Tanabata area. That was fun and I like that they do that for the event. We wrote a wish on a Mickey head and tied it to the pole with the rest of the wishes
  • Bought garlic shrimp and strawberry popcorn. I loved the strawberry and syth liked the garlic shrimp but thought the Chinese chili was better
  • We walked through the Teddy Roosevelt lounge
  • Watched part of the New York show which looked pretty fun. The line for that show was huge before it started
  • Took pictures in Toyville of toy story mania
  • It started raining so we waited in the fp kiosk area for tot waiting for our fp to start at 5:55
  • Went to use our tot fp but the line was backed up further than before when we rode and we didn’t want to be late for our big band beat show at 6:20. We gave our FPS to two teen girls who looked really happy.
  • Walked into big band beat at 6:20 pm. We got seats in the second section back, first row, on the far left side so didn’t have anyone directly in front of us. This show was AMAZING!!! I loved it so much! I play drums and watching Mickey actually play the drums (not just pretend) was so cool. I loved all of the broadway dancers and the music was great.
  • I finally went back to Mcduck’s and bought a Gelatoni plush and a Duffy’s Sunny Fun hat. It was pretty pricey but I like them both a lot.
  • We ate dinner at Vulcania in Mysterious Island.
    • It’s Chinese food. I had fried chicken in soy sauce and vinegar with white rice, both were yummy. Syth had sweet and sour pork, chili shrimp, and spring rolls. He said the sweet and sour pork was the best of the three. The theming is really neat and the floor actually shakes since you’re inside of a volcano.
  • We decided to leave after this because we’re waking up early for Disneyland tomorrow.
Overall, we had a fantastic day! We were able to get a TON done in one day and left two hours before park close. Our favorite things were: tower of terror, Magellan’s, and big band beat.

WOW... you guys really did do a-lot... sounds so amazing... Thanks for adding in all the snacks, I never know which snacks to try... I can't wait to check out your pictures...

Other than the problems with Breakfast how are you liking staying at the HTB?
How long is the monorail ride? and what are your thoughts on it?

It was fun to try the snacks for ourselves. I really didn’t think the mochi was that great. It was how people described it though. My favorite snack was either the caramel or strawberry popcorn and syth’s was the Chinese chili popcorn.

Besides the issue with the college kids HTB has been pretty great. Our room is big and we love the view of the bay. I’m hoping one of these days is clear enough to see Fuji. Thursday is supposed to be sunny so we’ll see. On our way back from the park today there were giant tour buses full of school kids checking into the hotel. They even had special staff holding elevators for them. I really hope they aren’t going into the park tomorrow. We talked to a guy in the elevator from California and he said he saw another hotel packed with school kids too. I’m not sure what they’re here for, but it explains why the hotel was sold out.

When I met my friend Maggy (who lives in Tokyo), she said the kids are all on field trips because I was wondering the same thing. They come from cities/towns outside of Tokyo. A couple of times in the evening, there would be a huge line of them waiting to get on the elevators but the staff/chaperones only used 2 of the 4 elevators so regular guests didn't have to wait.
I remember the first time walking into the hotel lobby and they were all over the place. I felt like I just walked into an anime.

So they don’t go to the parks? Lol

You’re right about the elevators. The staff were holding an elevator for day guests which I thought was pretty awesome of them

Any idea how long *field trip season* lasts, lol? We'll be at Tokyo Disneyland June 16-19 next year, also planning to stay at the Hilton Tokyo Bay.

I saw them at the hotel in the mornings and evenings mostly. Oh, they are ALL in the parks!! Rowdy kids having fun! Plus it was awesome to see a group of boys all wearing some kind of 'ears'.

Oh darn okay. I didn’t think they’d come into the parks. Yesterday we had four teen girls in front of us to get in the park and they let a group of teen boys join them. I was SO mad.

Just thought I’d post what it looks like at 7:50 for a 9 am opening

Walked into big band beat at 6:20 pm. We got seats in the second section back, first row, on the far left side so didn’t have anyone directly in front of us.

Did you win the lottery for those seats? Or did you just get in the "standby" line? The standby line always seemed to be crazy long (and cut off) whenever we have considered seeing Big Band Beat without tickets.

I wouldn't worry too much about the students - we had buses and buses of them arriving at the Hilton when we were there in May. I didn't notice them too much in the parks as they don't all travel together in huge groups. And I find their enthusiasm endearing (especially as they're teenagers) - most of them will wear ears or hats - the crazier the better!

The one major drawback is when they arrive and flood the convenience store in the Hilton. It took me a LONG time to buy an ice cream one night as they'd obviously just arrived and were all buying a late dinner.

Everyone was sitting on the ground but we forgot our leisure sheet so we stood

Can't you just sit on the ground? Or is it because you're in Japan and people sit on those sheet things? So confused, it's just pavement and it's probably cleaner than WDW and DLR both of which I'd sit on the pavement or a curb if necessary.

Just thought I’d post what it looks like at 7:50 for a 9 am opening

I have to say that the Early 15 is probably one of the greatest benefits by staying at a TDR hotel. I literally walked out of the hotel under the monorail station and straight to the gates with no one in line. Everyone else had to enter and wait at the far left side. BUT I would still stay at the HTB over the DL Hotel.
