Oh no! Notre Dame is on fire

I know it's too soon to assess the damage, but I sure hope the priceless stained glass windows survive.

Ronandannette, I think Paris is six hours ahead of Eastern Daylight Time.

because I saw the outpouring of grief and sympathy here on this thread for Paris, from open minded, cultured Americans, who actually understand the huge loss to world history, and then on Twitter the self absorbed, uncultured who I just unfollowed!

Guess you wouldn't have gotten as much social justice warrior cred if you left off the American label.

It really gets old.
I read the fire started just before 7pm Paris time, soon after it was closed to the public for the day. The report said an average of 30,000 people visited daily.

Devastating any time, but this is also Holy Week for observant Catholics.

I visited way back in 1987.

As sad as it all is, loss of life or people being harmed would make this much more tragic. It's a lot easier to lose stuff than people -- even with all of the history and art.

right now its 10pm in Paris, which is 6 hours ahead of New York

Catastrophic fire engulfs Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris
By LORI HINNANT and SAMUEL PETREQUIN9 minutes ago

PARIS (AP) — A catastrophic fire engulfed the upper reaches of Paris’ soaring Notre Dame Cathedral as it was undergoing renovations Monday, threatening one of the greatest architectural treasures of the Western world as tourists and Parisians looked on aghast from the streets below.

The blaze collapsed the cathedral’s spire and spread to one of its landmark rectangular towers. A spokesman said the entire wooden frame of the cathedral would likely come down, and that the vault of the edifice could be threatened too.

“Everything is burning, nothing will remain from the frame,” Notre Dame spokesman Andre Finot told French media. The 12th-century cathedral is home to incalculable works of art and is one of the world’s most famous tourist attractions.

The cause of the blaze was not known, but French media quoted the Paris fire brigade as saying the fire is “potentially linked” to a 6 million-euro ($6.8 million) renovation project on the church’s spire and its 250 tons of lead. Prosecutors opened an investigation as Paris police said there were no reported deaths.

Flames shot out of the roof behind the nave of the cathedral, among the most visited landmarks in the world. Hundreds of people lined up bridges around the island that houses the cathedral, watching in shock as acrid smoke rose in plumes. The fire came less than a week before Easter amid Holy Week commemorations.

French President Emmanuel Macron was treating the fire as a national emergency, rushing to the scene and straight into meetings at the Paris police headquarters nearby.

Deputy mayor Emmanuel Gregoire said emergency services were trying to salvage the famed art pieces stored in the cathedral.

Built in the 12th and 13th centuries, Notre Dame is the most famous of the Gothic cathedrals of the Middle Ages as well as one of the most beloved structures in the world. Situated on the Ile de la Cite, an island in the Seine river, the cathedral’s architecture is famous for, among other things, its many gargoyles and its iconic flying buttresses.

Among the most celebrated artworks inside are its three stained-glass rose windows, placed high up on the west, north and south faces of the cathedral. Its priceless treasures also include a Catholic relic, the crown of thorns, which is only occasionally displayed, including on Fridays during Lent.

The cathedral was immortalized in Victor Hugo’s “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” published in 1831, and has long been a subject of fascination in popular culture as well as the traditional art world.

French historian Camille Pascal told BFM broadcast channel the blaze marked “the destruction of invaluable heritage.”
“It’s been 800 years that the Cathedral watches over Paris”, Pascal said. “Happy and unfortunate events for centuries have been marked by the bells of Notre Dame.”

He added: “We can be only horrified by what we see.”

Associated Press reporters at the scene saw massive plumes of yellow brown smoke filling the air above the Cathedral and ash falling on the island that houses Notre Dame and marks the center of Paris. As the spire fell, the sky lit up orange.

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo is in despair at the “terrible fire.” Hidalgo said in a Twitter message that Paris firefighters are still trying to limit the fire and urged Paris citizens to respect the security perimeter that has been set around the cathedral.

Hidalgo said Paris authorities are in touch with the Paris diocese.

Reactions from around the world came swiftly including from the Vatican, which released a statement expressing shock and sadness for the “terrible fire that has devastated the Cathedral of Notre Dame, symbol of Christianity in France and in the world.”

In Washington, Trump tweeted: “So horrible to watch the massive fire at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris” and suggested first responders use “flying water tankers” to put it out.

Cardinal Timothy Dolan, the archbishop of New York, said he was praying “to ask the intercession of Notre Dame, our Lady, for the Cathedral at the heart of Paris, and of civilization, now in flames! God preserve this splendid house of prayer, and protect those battling the blaze.”

I’m hoping they can save the front facade and the beautiful stained glass...even if they can, there’s already been such a great loss...I’m just stunned.
Oh yes, the sculptures of the Kings of Isreal over the front entry is an absolute marvel - I do hope they and much of the rest of the marble is not damaged beyond reparation.

What a sad thing to happen, especially during Holy Week. I am sitting here watching the news coverage, with tears running down my cheeks. It was such a beautiful building. I hope they can save some of it, but only time will tell. I hope there were no injuries or deaths. The news says over 400 firemen are on the scene trying to fight the blaze. Such a terrible terrible day for France and for the world. :(

Fires caused by renovation has destroyed or devastated many buildings and ships.
That's so true. Across the street from my house, my neighbor was renovating and their young son started playing amid the tools, etc. Something caught fire and they were out of their house for over a year while a more major renovation was conducted.

It's devastating no matter the history or the size of the venue.

I've been to cathedrals all over, but I've never made it to Paris (yet). I feel a personal loss knowing that I won't ever be able to step over the threshold into that church.

My prayers are with the clergy in that cathedral and for the diocese of Paris... for the people of that parish and for the people of France... and for the people who worked in the church every day so that tourists could enter and marvel at the masterpiece that was.

So far, there is no news of injury. I pray that it remains a constant throughout this event.

I’m here now and I saw the outside of the cathedral yesterday when we were passing by. We remarked on the scaffolding.

We had a tour set up for Wednesday. I’m sick with disbelief.

It's getting more intense. The Paris fire chief is not sure if they can stop the fire from spreading.

“There’s a risk that the great bell falls. If the bell falls, it’s the tower that collapses. There are firefighters inside and outside. The next hour and a half will be crucial,” he told reporters on the scene.

This is so tragic for all of us. This was 800 years of history and devotion, destroyed. I attended Evensong here whenever I was in Paris. I’m heartbroken.

Yes, just saw that they aren't sure if the towers will survive. I sure hope so. Please, no more loss.

Have a friend there who ran the marathon yesterday there. Another friend and her family are there too. Told them now you can take before after shots. They took great pictures yesterday. Soo sad. It’s history in the making now. This day will be on some stone somewhere

My daughter says her French teacher cried most of class today.

I was wondering the same thing.

This is sad for sure. I know that this was on our list of places to see this June when we're there. Hoping that it doesn;t become a total loss.

We will be there in June for the first time and are so disappointed. Glad no one was hurt.
