The Running Thread - 2019

ATTQOTD: No one in my immediate family is a runner. My dad ran "back in the day" and was SO excited about the marathon, mentioning he always wishes he would have done one. I would really love if my sister would take up running... she also loves Disney and I think we could tour the runDisney circuit together :)

I was chased off last week. I have successfully parked for free at resorts having the fun runs, so if you have a car you could head over to POFQ on a Sunday. You could just do laps on your own, or do your laps and then join the fun run and eat tasty fried dough. I think in the AM you could probably sweet talk most of the not-on-the-monorail resort parking people to let you park and run.

mmmm fried dough!

I think even if I don't run there we may need to head over to POFQ via boat launch that weekend to get some beignets. I like this idea!

I've done a couple 5ks with my dad and he seems to enjoy them. My husband did a couple 5ks with me but didn't really enjoy it and hasn't gotten back to running. But thankfully I have a couple friends that are into running and are a similar pace so that works out.

QOTD: Do you have family members that run? Do you run with them or just have general running discussions with them?

My younger brother runs, sort of, sometimes. He lives across the country from me so we don't often run together, though we did Dopey 2017 together. We don't really have general conversations about running though.

15 - @Wendy98 - Boston Marathon (2:59:59 / N/A)

Yeah, I might want to change that goal. As much as I love to hit sub 3, this year's goal will be to finish and not completely embarrass myself by having a breakdown on the course. This will be my 6th Boston, and the 3rd one I will be running injured. My back problems which have plagued me for years, have really wreaked havoc. I have a bulging disc at my L5. While this is uncomfortable, I seem to manage it. However, it has created nerve damage down through my hips, glutes, and hamstrings. I have been so slow the past few months because every run hurts. I can get by with slow running, but any time I try to add speed, well, I can't. I have been seeing a specialist orthopedic the past 3 weeks. I have been on an accelerated treatment of PIT injections (Perineural Injection Therapy), once a week. I had my 3rd one yesterday. Jury is still out if it has done anything. Even better, it isn't covered by insurance and not cheap. This is just to get me through Boston, then he recommended I see the spine specialist when I get home to figure out the back situation.

And then there is the weather situation. After last year's weather, I said I would never do that again. I have never been so cold, wet, and miserable. Monday is looking like it has the potential for a repeat, but maybe not as cold. I am hoping it is more like 2015. No matter what Mother Nature throws at us, I KNOW I will be out there. This is the greatest race in the world and my favorite weekend. I will not waste the opportunity. I will still get teary eyed at the start and cry at the finish (and hopefully not cry during!). So while my goal will not be centered around time this year, Boston is just as important as ever.

I leave tomorrow. I haven't packed, still need to get my house together for my babysitters, and need to stop checking weather forecasts.

My family runs or has done races/been runners for years. Siblings ran CC so I ran CC basically. None of us race a ton though. Sometimes I'll run with my brother, but he is much faster. I know I can talk running with them anytime.

Just wanted to share some pictures with yall. Over the last week for some reason or another people have brought babies over to the office.

I kinda wish the kangaroo would be a full timer lol. We do have a little cat outside the office named Smokey. I am not a cat fan but I do like that one. It's all a sign.. I think.

We are getting ready to book another cruise with Carnival. Every time I price Disney cruises and just can't bring myself to pay 2 or 2.5 times the price for an equivalent cruise.

My family was just looking for a large-ish group (4 families, 4 rooms, 5 kids under 11) and there wasn’t even a comparison between Disney and other companies. I’ve been on a Disney cruise and loved it, but it wasn’t significantly different than the cruises I went on when I was younger on other lines (this was 2017 and I hadn’t been on a cruise since 2000). This time around we just couldn’t get past the price and I’m pretty sure that will be the case if we cruise again in the future.

ATTQOTD: My sister runs as well. We both just signed up for our 7th Dopey today. We run together a little; but she’s faster than me and is a metronome while I like to explore all of the paces. She also lives 6 hours away from me, so we don’t get to run together often.

ATTQOTD: No one else in my family runs...not until you go as far out as cousin's spouses. :) The downside of this is that no one really understands the ups and downs of training and racing. The good side of this is that pretty much anything I run is impressive to them. :)

I have a few coworkers and tennis friends that also run. Until this past Cherry Blossom race, I had not run a race (or even training run) with any of them. I tend to like to train alone. We do, however, chat sometimes about running stuff.

That all is why I come here. :)

QOTD: Do you have family members that run? Do you run with them or just have general running discussions with them?
I do not have any family members who run. I did get my mother into walking several years ago (she now walks 5.5 miles around her neighborhood with a group of neighbors every morning). She did participate in the Tinker Bell 5k and 10k with me a few years when it was on Mother’s Day weekend. So, while she is not a runner, she has a vague understanding of what this runDisney thing is all about!

QOTD: Do you have family members that run? Do you run with them or just have general running discussions with them?

My daughter and I trained together for the 2016 WDW 10k, and then for the 2017 Rebel Challenge. We don't race together, though - during a race, we each go at our own pace.

She went off to college in mid-2017, so I roped my younger son into training with me. He's a lot less focused than she is, so I end up doing my long runs solo and the shorter runs with him are more time together than serious training.

My wife took up running as well, although she can't run too much before her knees and/or ankles complain. We run together occasionally, but not often. She's running her first half in a couple weeks, and I'm doing the associated 5k as my daily training run.

My mom used to run laps around the high school track when I had football practice. So she used to do about 4-5 miles at about a 10-12 min/mile back in the early 2000s. When I picked up running in 2012, she got inspired to pick it back up again. She ran the Disney 5k in 2014, Disney 10k in 2015, Disney HM in 2016, Disney M in 2017, and Dopey in 2018 (age 61 I believe). She's done a smattering of races throughout the process with me as well. She plans to run the Disney HM in 2020. I don't run with her, but we have running discussions all the time. More so when she was really just getting into the longer distances. But she's SUPER stubborn. She hates the idea of "train slow to race fast" regardless of the data I show her. She likes competing on the treadmills with the local 20 somethings and "beating them". :rolleyes2 She has a hard time dropping that Type A, super competitive personality.

My younger sister picked up running slightly before I did in 2012 and ran 5k through marathon. But she's slowed down on running with hip, knee, and back issues. We've had a few conversations about running, but nothing extensive.

My wife, Steph, picked up running before I did in 2012 as well. She saw it as a means to get healthier. And she did well enough with it that it partially inspired me to try running as well in the summer of 2012 as a means to continue my weight loss. We used to "run together" because at the time we didn't have my daughter yet. I say "run together" because we would leave the house together and start running at the same time, but we ran at our own paces. We turned it into a little game where we'd both start at the same time and run for the same duration, but I'd have to go further. Whoever finished first had to add a little distance to the next run to try and even us out. Led to some epic sprints down the streets to see who would finish first. Used to do something similar back when we played 1v1 full court bball. She's done a few races, including some Disney HMs. But the running has definitely tapered off for her as G has gotten older. We used to trade off days of working out or day/evening. But eventually she decided it was too much for her. These days we do 80DO at 4:30am instead as our morning routine together (and G just sleeps). She listens to my running discussions whenever I go off on my tangents.

My daughter started run racing from the beginning with a diaper dash before she was one back in Disney 2015. She's done a few 100m races at Disney, a 400m race locally, a 1000m race locally, and we've got a few more planned throughout the year. She likes spectating and participating. We don't have in-depth conversations about running though as she's only 5. We've done one training run together and I imagine we'll do a few more once it gets warmer out.
Running truly is a family affair for you despite the different generations, distances and paces. I love that!

Are people allowed to run early in the morning through the disney springs shopping area? or do they have it closed off somehow? ...

I have read--on these threads--that Disney Security will not allow you to run through DS before it opens. You could try walking over to SS and doing the path that goes through there an OKW.

I was chased off last week. ...
DH and I were chased out of Disney Springs last year around 7:00. We were staying at Saratoga and ran around there and then about half-way through Disney Springs before security told us that we could not be there until the area officially opened. So, we ran back the way we came and got in a great run -- from Saratoga, to the Market Place, to somewhere past The Boat House and back the same route.

ATTQOTD: DH has been a runner since we met 40+ years ago. I started running with him about 6 years ago. He has been my mentor, encourager, cheerleader, etc. all along my running journey. No one else in my family runs, but a few acquaintances do. We don't really talk running much though.

@jmasgat @BikeFan @Wendy98 All the success at Boston! May it be a happy, safe, comfortable, great race this year!

What are the odds that it is the one out of San Juan on Sunday to the southern Caribbean?

I wish it was! We love the Southern Caribbean! Ours is out of Tampa to Key West, Mexico and Belize though. I hope you have a blast (assuming you'll be on that cruise, LOL).

ATTQOTD: I am an only child and grandchild, so my family is pretty small and consists of no runners. My husband, mom and dad all rides bikes though so they will tag along on my long runs and ride while I run.

ATTQOTD: 3 people: me, myself, and I
:P

Although someone in my extended family might be training for his first half - not sure

Here’s your race update @LSUlakes , I hadn’t announced to the board my intentions since I didn’t need even MORE pressure!

March 31 - dis_or_dat - Modesto Marathon - (3:40/3:26:14)

QOTD: Do you have family members that run? Do you run with them or just have general running discussions with them?

My wife has been running regularly now. We trained for and ran the full together this year in January at WDW. It was an awesome experience. We train separately now, but I do miss running with her. We talk about running a lot and that is fun too. We are planning to go back in 2020 and run in WDW together, but right now I'm selfishly focused on me trying to get faster by November for a marathon I'm doing in hopes of a BQ for 2021.
