Three Cheers for Minnie Ears: A March 2019 Trip Report *Updated 7/15*

Subscribed! :D Love your TR and you wasted no time in getting a lot done! :D

P.S. Crystal Palace is awesome! pooh:

Yay, thanks for reading! I agree, Crystal Palace is the best!!

And it will probably be much smoother! I'm totally psyched to give it a try this fall!

Good point- as much as i love Space Mountain, it seems to get rougher and rougher every time! Tron is probably going to be so smooth!

Joining in!

I'm sorry to hear about your MS diagnosis and the struggles you've had. You certainly deserved this fun trip!

Sounds like a good first night!

Love the matching outfits on your MK day. Sounds like EMM was well worth it and that the rest of the day was going very well! Such cute pics from Crystal Palace!

Thank you! :) EMM was 100% worth it- I'm glad I took the plunge and booked it.

Joining in and, as always, enjoying it all! I have MS as well. You and I are fortunate it was diagnosed - a lot stay on the not diagnosed side of the fence.. I do think your way of discovering was scarier than mine. Mine was related to trigeminal neuralgia so just pain - losing sight in an eye .. sheesh. All of that Disney walking keeps me going now :thumbsup2. I have had it for years (RRMS), am thankful as well for the insurance victories, and man have I gotten used to needles. :rotfl2:. My beautiful wife actually went back to school and became a RN, but it doesn't make the shots any better. Keep up the fight - you've got this!

Welcome! Always nice to hear from someone who understands the MS experience- I don't know anyone in real life who has it. I also have RRMS, and you're right that being diagnosed is actually something of a blessing- I've read of people who go years, decades even without being diagnosed. in a way, having such a scary first symptom was a blessing in disguise as well, because it made things move VERY fast. I got to the doctor right away and got an MRI the same week- which was enough for them to diagnose me.

Sending you good vibes for the future- It's a battle but you're right, we've got this! :)

Following along now and all caught up! I'm so glad I found your report because I also have a sister's trip planned and we're staying at Pop, so I'm super interested to see how you liked it there.

Southwest’s baggage claim is in terminal A, whereas DME picks up in terminal B. Translation: lots of walking and lots of backtracking.

Ugh, we found that out in January! It's such a pain, and we had to do it with two small kids and like 400 pieces of luggage :scared:

I really appreciated the hard floors as opposed to carpet. I HATE carpet. It's hard enough to keep clean in a home, I don't have any faith in hotels keeping it clean.

I feel the same way! Carpets are gross.

We ended up waiting almost 45 minutes… A serious dent into our Disney Springs time.

Ugh, that's awful!

But, I narrowed it down to one pair of ears and one fun shirt.

I love that shirt! I wonder if I could get my sisters to matching shirts?

The little girl running away has the right idea, lol.

:rotfl:

He was a ton of fun! He was confused by our shirts and asked me to explain what “bows before bros” meant. I told him I simply didn’t have enough time to make him understand. He agreed.

:rotfl2:

The Crystal Palace also has a special place in my heart because nearly 19 years ago, Eeyore and I took this picture there!

That's so cute!

Eeyore looks adorable as usual, but I don’t love how my face looks in this pic. As you can see, I mirrored it and slapped a filter on it to see if that made me like it any more... But, it didn't.

Aw, I think you just look so happy!

Can't wait to hear about the rest of your trip!

Yay, glad to have you along! Sisters trips are the best! :) We loved Pop- I was unsure how I would feel about it but I would 100% stay there again!

Aaaand I'm back! I meant to post an update this weekend but then life happened. You know how it is. Anyway, it's fitting that I finish up our first park day exactly one month after we were there!

Day 1, Part 3: Caffeine to the Rescue and a Fireworks Spectacular

By this point, we were feeling a bit run down. It was smack dab in the middle of the day, the crowds were buzzing, and the sun was at its peak. Wait times were high and I wasn’t having much luck with scoring another fastpass. The next hour or so are a bit of a lost time- we spent it wandering around, checking out stores, trying to find any sort of direction. It was sort of nice to just sit back and enjoy the ambiance and not rush from ride to ride.
We eventually took a ride around the Rivers of America, which ended up lulling me into feeling much sleepier than I wanted to. We ended up sitting RIGHT in direct view of the sun, which make us feel even more tired. But, I figured it was nothing a rocket around the solar system couldn’t fix. My refreshing skills came back with a vengeance and I got us another fastpass for Space Mountain, so we made the trek over there.

R21hhWo.jpg

I was sleeeepy.
Even a galactic journey wasn’t enough to wake me up, so I decided the only way to get over the hump was to pay a visit to the main street bakery- aka, Starbucks.

On the way, we had the first of many encounters with the mickey street party parade and the song that haunts my eardrums to this day.

3ycMdLN.jpg

C’mon everybody put your ears on…. It’s a good, good, good, good time!
We watched the float pass by and continued to Starbucks. The line wasn’t as long as I expected, and soon enough we had our trenta mango dragonfruit refreshers (yummy). I never get anything above a grande, but figured I needed MAXIMUM SUGAR JUICE to get me through the rest of the night.

We settled on a bench in the hub, which was nice and quiet compared to the crowds in the rest of the park. And soon, something caught my eye.

NzLhn7r.jpg

It’s Phineas and Ferb! And yes I didn't bother to zoom in... Just squint a little and you'll see them.

I almost couldn’t believe what I was seeing, since I’ve never seen them in the parks before. They walked around with a few handlers and a growing crowd of fans following them. We saw a few rare characters in the hub, and my assumption was that they were “learning” since they didn’t stay for long. But who knows!

Once the full contents of our Starbucks drinks were well on their way to terrorizing our bladders, we got up and set back out to conquer the park. We had time to kill before we could check in for our fireworks dessert party, so I got us a Dumbo fastpass.

NklEx3U.jpg

Whee!
I swear we have the worst luck with Dumbo…. Our elephant refused to fly, which is a problem we’ve had before. But eh, it was something to do.

It was finally time to check in for our fireworks dessert party reservation at Tomorrowland Terrace. I opted for the terrace party as opposed to the garden party because I valued getting to sit in a chair over having the "perfect" view. If I wanted the perfect view, I would just watch the show on Youtube- a good experience is more important! After a day spent on my feet, I thanked my past self for making that call.

We checked in right at 6:50, and a few people were already seated. I was worried we wouldn’t get a good table, (if you haven’t noticed yet, I tend to worry a lot) but we were shown to one right on the rail!
GnPoM9l.jpg

The cast member asked "is this one ok?" and through the tone of her voice I could tell she knew the answer was YES! Within just a few minutes, i could already tell I was going to love, love LOVE the entire experience. We immediately went and made our plates, determined to try out everything and get our money's worth.

I1eBEpo.jpg

My first (of several) plates. The brownies were my favorite. Sure, they were probably just your standard Betty Crocker box brownies, but they were good!

I liked that we checked in so far in advance of the show because it gave us time to eat, go back for seconds (and thirds), and get a hot drink before the action started. Plus, we had plenty of time to soak in the amazing view and the amazing experience. Enjoying a cup of tea with a great view of the castle instead of being herded around like cats trying to find a spot for the show was amazing. Just looking at the pictures makes me want to send myself back in time and live through it all over again!

oZU7Ioz.jpg

Send me back!!!

After the sun went down, it was finally time for the show. I put my phone on the table and snapped a few pics at random points, but they DO NOT do the view justice AT ALL! The perspective is way off. I wish I could’ve used my eyes to take a pic instead, because the view was amazing. The fireworks were so close, and we could still see most of the projections. It was so amazing to watch the show from the comfort of our table in a nice secluded spot without being pushed, and without having to worry that the person in front of us was about to pull out an iPad or put their kid on their shoulders. It really felt like a private show… As long as I didn’t look to my right or left and see the tables next to us. So, mostly a private show.

E13EGv1.jpg

Ooh!

33WYOmG.jpg

Aaah!

2GwQ2wl.jpg

Fireworks!

N7x502K.jpg

Whee!

Again, please don't judge my photos, and please take my word for it that the view looked MUCH better in person. Anyway, Happily Ever After was just as great as I remembered. I always tear up for the 10ish seconds that they play “You’ll be in My Heart” from Tarzan…. One of my favorite Disney songs! And the Pirates of the Caribbean part is the BEST, in my humble -definitely-not-biased Pirates fan opinion.

Also, Tinkerbell flew RIGHT over us. I didn’t realize that’s the way she went- when we sat down the cast member said, “good news, Tinkerbell is flying tonight!” but I didn’t make the connection until she was literally flying towards us! It was so cool!

We LOVED the show, but to me, nothing come close to World of Color over in DCA! Although I haven’t seen it in a few years, so I have no idea if they’ve changed anything…. But in my memory, it’s perfect! I’m basically opposed to camping out far in advance for a show, but I’ve proudly waited an hour to see World of Color from the perfect angle and didn’t regret it for a second.

It was so hard to say goodbye to our fireworks party experience, so we stuck around for a few minutes and watched the crowds dissipate. Then, it was time to head out for – what else? – another FP ride on Space Mountain!

(to be continued..... in the next post)

Day 1, Part 3 Continued
Before long, we were blasting off in our rockets.

MuY9oYC.jpg

We redeemed ourselves by doing the “Wakanda forever” salute correctly this time.

I had no luck making any more FPs after we got off, because the app and mobile site both said distribution had concluded for the day- even though the park was going to be open for 2 more hours. I swear on our last trip I was making FPs right up until close. Maybe something’s changed, or maybe that’s just a reality of visiting at a busier time. In any event, the wait times were looking fairly reasonable, so we spent some time revisiting Fantasyland for the first time since the wee hours of the morning. I didn’t take any pictures though.

We decided to call it a night around 9:50, and started the trek out of the park and to the buses.
FoB7QjT.jpg

A blurry pic of us saying our goodbyes to main street.

And just like that, our first day was done! I was so wired from the Starbucks and the tea I had during the dessert party that I didn’t fall asleep for hours. From the moment we stepped off the bus at 6:40 am to the moment we left at 9:50, we logged a total of 15 hours in the park! This was BY FAR the longest continuous park day of the trip, because after this we took a LOT more breaks. But, there’s no better way to start the trip than with a little overkill!

Touringplans predicted this day as a 6, and ended up calling it a 7, which I suppose felt about right. It was busy, but it wasn’t overwhelming. We didn’t have the slam dunk success with the refresh method that we had on our last trip- it took longer to find what we wanted, and sometimes the availability just wasn’t there. But, I would still consider 4 rides on Space Mountain in one day to be a success!

Next up: Somehow finding the energy to rope drop Hollywood Studios!

Thanks for reading! :)

Great - now I have it stuck in my head too (it's the music for the new Disneyland fireworks show too) :p

I think as part of Mickey's 90th Birthday celebration they have duos of characters in the Hub/Town Square every day. They rotate through them, I don't remember the exact schedule though!

we used to sit to watch wishes at that same spot before they made it a dessert party so i know what a view you have. so cool when tinkerbell flew right above us!! can't wait for the rest of your trip. love your ears!!

What a great seat!!!

I had the same problem that night. I was trying to pick up single FPs across our 5 bands and having no luck. There was a pie-in-the-sky scenario where Hubby took the kids back to the room while I toured for an extra hour or two. It didn't pan out because they had completely fallen asleep in the strollers, but I couldn't get any good FPs anyway. I was either getting distribution done or only seeing IASW, and that was before 8pm with the 10pm close.

I had no idea they used that song in Disneyland too lol- it's such an earworm!! I do like it though. And good to know re: Phineas and Ferb. We saw a couple other rare characters later in the week that must've been part of that event too.

Glad to hear it wasn't just me. It was a problem we encountered here and there throughout the week. So maybe it was a crowds thing or maybe it was just MDE being MDE. I had slightly more success using the mobile site on other nights, but on this night I couldn't get anything. It was a bummer.

Day 2, Part 1: A Morning with Character at Hollywood Studios
After our marathon day 1 Magic Kingdom extravaganza, it's a wonder we managed to get up and get ready to rope drop Hollywood Studios. But, we did. We caught the bus with no problems, and by 8:30 we were off the bus and about to undergo the awful, no good, very bad walk from the Pop Century temporary bus drop off to the main gate of the park. I think by now they have the new bus stops open- which is a good thing, because the walk was BRUTAL and a not-so-fun way to start the day.

C9JgZls.jpg

The ghostly looking skyliner cars were whirling by. They moved much quicker than I thought they would. Gotta say though, they're a big thumbs down for me. Putting the air conditioning debate aside, I have a very irrational fear of any sort of sky based transport.... Ski lifts, gondolas, sky buckets, the chair lift ride at the local zoo, anything suspended on a wire dangling me mercilessly off the ground is a no go. ESPECIALLY when you're going over water. Nope. Nope. NOPE. I’ve seen some speculation that bus service at Pop will go away to areas the skyliner serves…. I hope that’s not the case because I’d love to stay there again, and I’d hate to feel shoehorned in to taking the super scary skyliner.

So, anyway, back to the trip:
Bag check was busy but the lines moved quickly. Soon enough we were scanned in and in the park.
VuWVOE5.jpg

We weren't interested in being anywhere near the mad dash to Slinky Dog, and knew that Rock n Roller Coaster would have a much smaller crowd first thing in the am, so we hung back and didn't try to fight our way through the crowd. It wasn't long before everyone started moving, and we veered right while the masses went to Andy's backyard. Compared to the cattle call of ropedropping Space Mountain, rope dropping RNRC was much calmer. We walked at a leisurely pace and waited maybe 5, 10 minutes max before we were loaded into our super stretch limo.
ACXLdmw.jpg

Hard to tell from this pic, but this train was half empty. There was nobody coming behind us so I had time to stand and watch the launch, which never gets old.

This is the part where I'd share our ride photo.... But, when we exited into the giftshop we were greeted by totally powered down monitors. The pictures never hit our magic bands either, so I'm assuming the whole system was down. Bummer. But, it wouldn't be our last high speed race through LA. In fact, we returned twice that same day (spoiler alert).

On the way out, we stopped to rock on for a photopass session:
7dq5ySs.jpg

And we spotted another photographer just a few steps away, so we took some fun Tower of Terror shots:

5kgpGLx.jpg

lrpa25s.jpg

The scream photo is pretty much an accurate depiction of how we both feel about that ride.... I'll get on pretty much any roller coaster, but I do NOT do drop rides. I did the tower once, emphasis ONCE, back before they rethemed it in DCA and I promised myself I would never do it again. My sister did it once when we were little, at the urging of our dad (it didn't work for me, I was 18 when I finally allowed myself to be co-orced into riding) and she hated it too. So needless to say we weren't checking in to the Hollywood tower hotel at any point during this trip!
We also had a fun cameo from Tinkerbell:

C0JHUpS.jpg

When we reached the hub, we found - surprise surprise - another photopass opportunity.

Q7WWhwj.jpg

These pics took HOURS to show up in MDE. When I finally saw them, I forgot we had even taken them.

We had some time before our second fastpass at Midway Mania, so we decided to go meet some characters. We headed over to the animation courtyard, but nobody was meeting yet. So we went in to launch bay, which was somewhat of a ghost town.

We started off by meeting Chewbaca:

8XtHTuJ.jpg

*Insert Wookie noise here*

And then we met BB8:

6z7HvDV.jpg

Then we went back outside and met Pluto!

jr26wk0.jpg

Group hug!

QAVgkDF.jpg

Since we're a bit outside the age range of the Disney Junior characters that met next to Pluto, we decided that our character spree would continue with Olaf:

dPUbVus.jpg

Somewhere in the midst of all this I found out that Midway Mania was down, and our fastpass was now good for anything. Rather than wait for it to come back online and brave the crowd of people trying to use their anytime fastpass, we decided to use it for something else. Since we had another HS day planned, plus after hours on the horizon, so it wasn't a huge deal if we didn't do everything at once. Ah, the luxuries of having 7 park days.

Since HS is light on attractions, it just made sense to use our anytime FP on another RNRC ride. We timed it so we could use the anytime FP and then our actual FP one after the other, which added up to 3 rides before noon! (See, another 3!)

But first, we stopped to meet Goofy:

ysXlfFN.jpg

Then, it was time to live out our groupie fantasies and follow Aerosmith on tour:

6gUuLbW.jpg

We made it a goal to do Wakanda Forever on each of the roller coasters. The frame kind of ruins it though....

The next time around, we decided to be unimpressed:

33wvg3S.jpg

Which is a very hard face to hold when you're being launched so fast!
Since we once again had time to kill before our Star Tours FP, we decided to eat an early lunch at Backlot Express, since it's so close. We mobile ordered, which worked out great, because the lines were already pretty long.

Our lunch was uneventful and not worth photographing. I think we both had chicken fingers.

The only thing of note was a group of Stormtroopers who came by on patrol as we were waiting for our food:

jmJmYS1.jpg

Once we finished eating, we went outside to watch the Jedi training academy. The kids are sooooo cute in their little robes. Didn't take any pics though, because they weren't my kids and that's kind of weird. Just take my word for it.

Then it was finally time for our Star Tours flight. Neither of us are really Star Wars fans, but Star Tours is one of my favorite rides. It's a lot of fun, the queue is fun, and the line is usually pretty reasonable.

After that, we were pretty much done with Hollywood Studios. It was a warm day, and we didn't feel like dealing with the crowds anymore. So, we decided to take a much-needed mid-day break, the first of many. After going so hard on our first park day, we embraced the "show up in the morning, chill in the afternoon, come back at night" model. Again, the wonders of having 7 park days.

I'll pick up there in the next update. See you then! As always, thanks for reading :)

I couldn't agree more. Let's not even throw in how the Florida weather will affect them...

Super cute character pics.

Wow, so much RnR. I'm totally jealous.

We had to do the TSL RD thing because kids. Oh well, one day we'll be able to focus on thrill rides, too.

Cute PP and character pics! Sounds like a good morning!

Thanks! It was a great morning. :)

Super cute character pics.

Yup. I don't know how the skyliner is ever going to run in the summer with the daily thunderstorms. Lord knows I wouldn't want to be anywhere near one in the rain!

Wow, so much RnR. I'm totally jealous.

We had to do the TSL RD thing because kids. Oh well, one day we'll be able to focus on thrill rides, too.

RNRC is one of our favorites- It was a blessing in disguise that Midway Mania went down because it was the only way we were going to get another ride on RNRC that day, given how bad the standby crowds were. Good on you for rope dropping Toy Story Land. I've heard too many horror stories to attempt it.

Love all the character meets - how fun!

The next time around, we decided to be unimpressed:

 Looks like the people behind you were in on it - they look pretty relaxed too!

I honestly can't wait to try the Skyliner! I think it will beat the heck out of waiting for a bus to come.

But, it wouldn't be our last high speed race through LA. In fact, we returned twice that same day (spoiler alert).
You girls really love your rough coasters! I'm the opposite of you though - I will do ToT without hesitation, but RnRC is a no-go!

I'm so loving your trip report. Such wonderful sister memories you're making. You had an awesome first day. Long but you accomplished so much.

I can't believe you were able to get up and make rope drop on day two. :thumbsup2
