I love credit cards so much!

I have the Chase Marriott. It’s a solid sign up bonus and card. Though I think I got 100K. I’ll prob keep it for a year for the free night. But IMO the Spg ones are better (biz and lux) because of the bonus categories. It would be on the chopping block first. I’d prefer the Hyatt actually because I feel those points go further and you can transfer URs too. But if you have a specific redemption in mind it’s a good one plus there is more opportunities to get more miles unless you fall into that crazy algorithm (I do I can’t get anymore starriott sign ups for a while).

I'm planning to do Hyatt for DH, and (so long as Amex doesn't start hating him), I was planning to do SPG Luxe with them since he's never had any Marriott card. I'd like to have that and whatever the high end Hilton card is (Aspire?) so that I can time it to have high status when we're in Japan. I might wait and see if I can get a higher offer on the Marriott personal or get a mailer for it though.

I’ve adopted this exact strategy with my BGR. I could have easily hit the $5k MSR in one month, but I’ve distributed that spend across my other Amex cards, and added Amex Offers to use on my lesser used cards, to even out my spend on the MSR card and across my Amex portfolio. (I’ve got 9 open Amex cards, and I’m putting some spend on my wife’s 2 Amexes too. It’s become a real pain managing all these cards, being careful not to overspend on any, and it kills me a little to use an Amex for something when there’s a better bonus category on one of our Chase cards.) So instead of my BGR statements looking like $5k in a month with a steep drop off, it’s more like $800, $2,100, $1,400, $700+... Of course this means putting off the bonus posting, if it does at all because you never know these days. I’m a bit nervous. When I finally hit MSR on my BGR later this month, I should have at least put several thousand $ of spend on my other non-MSR Amexes. Fingers crossed that’s enough to keep Amex happy and get me the 50k MR.

With everything we’re learning about Amex, I’ve become very reluctant to recommend their cards to anyone who isn’t planning to continue spending on their Amex, even if there are better bonus categories on other cards and big signup bonuses on new cards; or is planning to cancel the card after just one year to avoid AFs.

I’m really feeling @GlamMistress’s earlier post, almost like I’m a captive in Amex’s ecosystem. There are several more Amex bonuses that I want, so I’ll play their game a little while longer. I’m putting most of our spend on our Amex cards when not working on MSR. There could be worse currencies to be earning than MRs, Marriott, and Hilton, all of which I have plans to use, but there are so many opportunities lost if you want to keep on Amex’s good list.
For what it’s worth I just got both of my bonuses for BBP and PGR no problem so I think you’ll be fine. I just posted my list and I hit amex hard aug-dec. I can’t remember did your DW get the pop up?

What’s it at 75K? Maybe do the Hyatt for you instead because I’m pretty sure you can combine them and that’d be a nice stash of DH gets it soon. I’m eyeing that aspire too for DH or me. Haven’t even dabbled in Hilton points yet!!!

Yes, 75k right now. That's not a bad idea on doing the Hyatt for both of us. I need to pull up that DoC page that tells you which combination of SPG/Marriott cards you can get so I can figure out a plan for DH. Really only need Hilton points for our (hopefully) Hilton Tokyo Bay stay for Tokyo Disney!

So many points to get, so little time... and DH's Citi AA biz still isn't here!! I don't know what's taking so long, I got the benefits mailer, but still haven't received the card. I was hoping to use it at the vet's office tomorrow morning for my dog's annual checkup.

In light of recent Amex troubles, I'm really considering getting the Marriott personal card for myself with Chase. I'm 3/24, will be 2/24 in June. I'd like to bump up our Marriott points for our trip to Japan next year, so why not? Anyone see any issues? I currently have Marriott biz (will cancel in a couple weeks) and have the SPG biz, which I will keep long-term.

Depending on when you got the SPG Biz bonus you are probably good -
Bonus is not available if you
"are a current or previous cardmember of either The Starwood Preferred Guest® Business Credit Card from American Express or the Starwood Preferred Guest® American Express Luxury Card, and received a new cardmember bonus or upgrade bonus in the last 24 months;"

So if you got the sign up bonus more than 24 months ago you are supposed to be good to go.

I hate when cards are delayed!!!!

It’s become a real pain managing all these cards, being careful not to overspend on any,

This is me now. I have 19 cc's with payments due this month. If my dh knew, he would croak. And I do feel like I am spending more to keep Amex happy and use offers that are, many times for me, something I would not have purchased if not for the offer and my desire to use the offer plus put spend on the card. I need to back off a bit on my spend and I will be in a cancelling frenzy for the next 8 mos with Amex cards, with the exception of the couple I will keep. So, I may never get another Amex again after that as they will put me on their naughty list.

I also realize that, for us, the spg cards were maybe not the smartest move. I got caught up in the FOMO here (no one's fault but my own!) thinking I *needed* those cards. In the end, there aren't really too many properties that I think we will use the points at. I was able to redeem a boatload of points and get the N&F package. The 7-night cert isn't too valuable but I love getting the 120k SW RR's. So not a total loss at all!

I'll find somewhere to use the points (and the cert hopefully) but it is a lesson to make sure you have a use for points before just blindly going for them because everyone else has a good use and therefore, thinks they are great. Each of us travel differently, have different family sizes, are in different seasons of life that may limit our traveling, etc. I get a bit mad at myself for using up so much Amex 'grace' (??) getting all those spg cards but I learned a valuable lesson so I'm glad for that.

I agree with this completely. There are two or three more AmEx cards I'd like to get so I'm going to prioritize spending on AmEx for this year and then not worry about whether I am on their good list. On the other hand, I have gotten the ones that I most want so my plans won't be totally derailed if I don't get more.

Trying to figure out my longterm strategy for airline points and had a question. Is the SW bonus restrictions separated by personal/business cards? Trying to decide when I can apply again (churn!) these cards. Here are my card dates:

SW Biz applied 12/04/17, bonus rec’d 02/11/18

SW Premier applied 01/10/18, bonus rec’d 03/01/18

If I’d like try for the CP in 2020, assuming the rules don’t change by then, I could apply for SW biz on 02/12/20 (or a few days after) and Premier/Plus 03/02/20. Do I have that correct? Or would I need to wait for 24 months after receiving either bonus?

Side note- it was really hard to put in the extra zeros to format the dates in MM/DD/YY format but I did it just for @SouthFayetteFan :teeth::)

Ah, I thought personal cards only affected other personal. Didn't realize business cards could affect the bonus too. So looks like I'm out on Chase Marriott.

So looking at this list- https://www.doctorofcredit.com/specifics-of-chase-american-express-limiting-spg-marriott-bonuses/ does this mean I could get DH the Amex SPG Luxe, and then get him the SPG Biz? I'm not seeing the Luxe included on the exclusions list for SPG Biz.

R-C at St Petersburg or Naples. If I were paying cash (I know...) Don Cesar on St Pete Beach (it's pink!).
Ritz Carlton Naples (not the golf resort) is gorgeous. I eat at their beach hut often when I visit my parents and stayed there as a child before my parents bought a house in Naples. But holy cow is it expensive!

And finally caught up! Between crazy busy at work and getting ready to go to WDW I had not read for a couple days.

I vote for a new thread if this one is locked. Because this thread is a monster. A good monster. But still.

I posted earlier how I had a weird call upgrading DH's Freedom back to a CSR. Rep would not say if she would do it and call ended with "you will get a letter." BUT then yesterday I get on his account and it is a CSR. So go figure. @GlamMistress @palhockeymomof2 if you call and then just have DH on speaker phone while you do most of the talking it works. Even if you are following DH around in your attempt to get them to talk.

And the sad news whole reason if I have time to catch up and post is that we just got notice our flight to MCO is delayed 2.5 hours. So now we will be getting in at 2 am. I guess it is the snow you all are talking about on the east coast?

I am hoping this is not a sign of a not great trip. Girls have all been fighting off being sick, work and school is so busy, my husband's knee has been bad. And this is our first DVC trip. Split stay at AKV Kidani and BLT one bedrooms. I really hope I don't find out that I dumped all this money into DVC and do not even like it. Starting everyone off completely exhausted is not good.

And credit card news...applied for Hyatt card for DH and still pending. No calls at all. It has been 4 days. Geez.

Goes back to my conversation starter about diluting earning too.

1. A point is worth nothing if it isn't redeemed.
2. You need enough points for a good redemption.
3. Often average spenders do best focusing on smaller buckets of points.

This is what I've decided after doing this for nearly 6 years now. Churning is harder the longer you're in the game. Perhaps I'm moving toward quality (MR and UR) and maybe less quantity (single program currencies).

We’ve got sizeable (6 figure) buckets of UR, MR, Marriott, Hilton, United, and Hawaiian, but I definitely agree my focus has been on “quality” currencies like UR and MR that are transferable to airlines, hotels, or cash. We have some stray points in IHG, JetBlue, and SW that are all but useless for redemptions in their current amounts.

I’ve distributed that spend across my other Amex cards, and added Amex Offers to use on my lesser used cards, to even out my spend on the MSR card and across my Amex portfolio.
I’ve started doing this, too. For anyone who has old AMEX cards and is thinking along the same lines- are you keeping spending on old AMEX cards at their historical levels, or spreading spending evenly across all cards?

I have a Delta card from 2004 that, since I got a CF in 2007, has seen very little spend. I’m trying to decide if I’m better off putting it into rotation more, or leaving it at its decade-long pattern and focusing spend on newer Amex cards instead. Right now I’m leaning toward leaving it alone with just its small monthly recurring charge, giving me one less card to think about.

Only one I know for sure is CC funding does not meet the DD requirement. Some bank transfers count, I have heard Chase mentioned as working but unsure on Discover or Cap One.
How do you know if something counts as a direct deposit with PNC?

Anyone have any amazing beachfront hotels in Florida (preferably gulf side) they've stayed at/dream of staying at with points? Looking for our 15 yr anniversary...
We loved the SandPearl Resort in Clearwater Beach. The hotel was absolutely beautiful, their breakfast is delicious and the best part was getting upgraded to a fabulous 1 bedroom suite with ocean and bayview balconies. Trying to decide if we stay there again when we go to FL in June or try someplace new.

So I read and read and read and google and research and I still don't "get" the whole AMEX thing. I look at the cards (gold, lux, blue, green, etc) and they don't seem that lucrative. No big sign up bonuses. Is there a write up somewhere where I could learn WHY people love them so much?

*DH just got approved for the AMEX Hilton Ascend for 150,000 Hilton points so I'm wondering if I should be ready to *do* something with this and his next card should be another AMEX.....I want to be prepared.

Any ideas about further discounting a ticket transaction on Undercover Tourist?

I did the staples $200 GC thing on a couple cards, intending to use them to buy Universal tickets on Undercover Tourist. Seems that you can only use 1 payment method at a time on UT. Any tricks to aggregate Visa gift cards so that I would have more $$ on one card? Tricks to get UT to take more than one card per transaction? Not a big deal if I can't use them for my tix, I can just use them on routing spend or on my hotel room, but I was trying to come up with a way to get some kind of discount on the UT transaction.

I just bought tickets from UT last week. I had about $750 in rewards in both mine and DH's Barclay Arrival Cards. So, I wanted to split the payment so I would not have to pay out of pocket. I needed 3 tickets total cost about $1500. I called UT and was told they can only do 1 form of payment. So, I ordered 2 tickets from my card and 1 from DH's card. Will have to pay some out of pocket on DH's card but now still have about $250 in rewards on mine to use.
