Disney Announces it is making "The Nutcracker And The Four Realms" Christmas Movie

Yea we had a hard time staying actually. Keira Knightley was pretty good as was Foy, but just to bored with the story.

Sounds like it's first weekend was a bust. I said the same thing about A Wrinkle In Time, but Disney really needs to stop making super creepy trailers for their "family friendly" movies. My kids get nightmares just from the teaser. I'd imagine there were a lot of other families with children who felt the same after watching this preview - and decided against going to see it.

The Nutcracker story is and always has been creepy, a borderline dream and nightmare. Because it has traditionally been done with ballet with little story or context for characters I think most watching just enjoy the beauty and don't think about it. Actually thought the movie's Nutcracker was a softer more lovable character than the traditional one.

I think they released it 3-4 weeks too early. It should have been released Thanksgiving weekend at the earliest.

It just seems that Disney has too many movies that can potentially compete with each other. There is only so many "family" movies you can produce in a given year. Families probably only go to the movies a few times a year anyway.

So . .I am just not sure why Disney bothers with these seemingly "pet" projects. They just don't seem to have an audience compared to all their other, more successful, films.

I think they released it too early ............ it is a Christmas movie and seeing it right at Halloween was just too early. I think moving it would attract those looking for Christmas with a bigger opening. Now it may just fizzle by time Thanksgiving passes.

Considering taking the family to see this over the weekend but have been hearing very negative things? Is it worth it or would I be better off saving my money for another film?

Depends on how many movies are in your budget this season, the ages of your party and what types of movies you like. Like which other movie would you have to give up to see it. :confused3

We saw it in Dolby Cinema at Disney Springs. Imagine Alice in Wonderland mixed with Narnia, minus Johnny Depp...mix in a little of that oz movie...

It’s a beautiful movie, but the story was lame.

Saw it Sunday and LOVED it!
- Absolutely beautiful visually, costumes, details, colors ...
- I loved the Tim Burton type touch, it works perfect with this story which is Christmas yet Haunting. It is supposed to be dark.
- Love that you saw the Oz too, another of my favorites. Many nods that I think were deliberate.
- Tchaikovsky is my favorite classical composer so loved the music (yeah know every note), was that me directing in the theater?
- Thought it was well cast and honestly the whole movie was waiting for Knightley only to finally realize that was her. Bravo.
- Seen ballet many times and NO character is ever given any depth of story ... there isn't time in a normal time frame ... they pop in and out.
- There is a story, but because it really is too long, I think they struggled with giving enough time without losing critical characters.
- So while I would have loved more depth in the characters/story, I also know there are too many characters to do in the couple hours. They should have cut out characters.
- To the folks (not here) that reviewed it poor because the "Main character the movie is named after" ... Nutcracker, got too small a part ... bless your hearts and don't review movies you know nothing about the story.
- I will buy it, watch it each year as a tradition and to pick up on all the details am sure I missed.

To be honest, I hadn’t looked at any of the ads until I just watched the one posted above. And now I REALLY want to see it! It was always a dark story... and it looks beautiful. Plus, I love the music.

That was my exact thought. Not to mention the fact that Disney's release schedule seems to be rather crowded, with Ralph Breaks the Internet and Mary Poppins Returns being on the not-so-distant horizon.

As for my thoughts on the movie, I thought the visuals and costumes were great, and the music was brilliantly done, as was the acting, but I already get the feeling that it's going to be rather underrated due to, as I've mentioned, the release being too close to two other Disney films.
