Another week, another shooting

You know what disturbed me the most about this (besides the fact that people were killed and injured)? It is that I wasn't very disturbed when I first read the headline this morning. I was scrolling through msn news and saw the story, and it didn't send shock waves like it usually does. I was apalled at how desinsitized I am becoming to news like this. Because it seems like it happens weekly now.

I wonder when we as a society will start to value human lives again? I am so sorry to the victims and their families, and hope they may find peace somehow. I can't imagine what they are going through.

It hadn't been posted because everyone knows how the next few pages of this thread will go, and then it will be locked. Just find the last shooting thread and re-read it, and in your mind every time it mentions the location or the # of victims, just substitute the latest details. Close enough. Really, no need to have a new thread every time this happens ... we don't have a new thread for every car crash that occurs.

It is sad that you view this as common as a car crash, and that we are so divided as a society that instead of following the rules and having an adult discussion, we have to turn it into something that gets locked.

For the record, we do have threads for many car crashes that kill a large number of people.

To equate this to a car crash is absurd.

Every mass shooting should be discussed until there are no more.

It can’t really be discussed in this forum without breaking the rules though...

I JUST mentioned to my husband that it was like a little blip on the news this morning and that. I was saddened that I wasn’t more bothered by it, I’ve become kind of numb to it I guess.

what I want to say I cant, due to Dis rules, so this is my opinion

America is like an alcoholic or drug user, interventions and rehab wont work until there is a self realisation of a problem and a genuine and real wish to get healthy and well

Yup

I am not numb to this tragedy, however I am exhausted by the direction the discussions take. I have deliberately not read much in FB because of the remarks that will be made.

I am not going to participate in the closing of this thread, so I also will keep my opinion to myself.

I too was surprised by how "normal" this seems nowadays. I read the details and moved on to the next story. And yes this thread will be predictable - lots of thoughts and prayers. When we should have action and change.
Doing nothing will just see this trend of shootings continue.

Yep. And I don't think it is just the rules of this board making it feel that way, as some suggested upthread. It seems to me like every subsequent shooting gets less traction, both on mass media and conversationally on social media. It is like we as a society have truly accepted that there is nothing we can do to prevent these things, so we just cluck our collective tongues about how sad it is and move on to the next thing, much as we would a plane crash or particularly tragic car accident.

I took the car crash remark to be that unfortunately these incidents are becoming all too common and as already been stated in this thread, we as a society are not viscerally affected now by every horrific incident as we should be. This one hits close to home as I have 2 in college and I could picture them and their friends as being victims.

And yes every mass shooting should be discussed. But our society is not at a place of being able to have a civil discussion on many matters. And that is truly unfortunate and sad.

Those of us on the Dis discussion boards have tried to have many discussions on the topic, but it hasn't worked and there are rules on these boards that prevent some of the discussion from happening.

Hoping for a day when we do not have to worry about mass shootings and loss of life

Seems like this thread will go just as many of those in the past have. Some passive aggressive posts draped in innocence will be made and finally someone will take the bait and it will end up closed. Same old, same old.

I try not to, I don’t WANT to be, but I’m only human. I do what I can to solve what I perceive to be the root of the problem (VOTE!) but...

move to my country, while we do have crime and bad things happen, we DONT have mass shootings, our children are safe in schools, you can go to a nightclub or bar or cinema or outdoor music event without the fear of a white man with mental illness killing people with a legally obtained gun.

To equate this to a car crash is absurd.

Why? Every time I get in my car and get on the road, I am taking the small risk that I will be in some terrible car crash that ends my life - maybe a distracted, tired, or intoxicated driver.
Every time I walk into a school, museum, restaurant, shopping mall, concert, grocery store, church, airport baggage claim, etc, I am taking the small risk that some random gunman starts shooting and ends my life.
Just a fact of life.

I didn't investigate further to verify this, but I saw on one site that at least one of the people at this bar was also present at the Las Vegas massacre. That should be a wake up call to anyone who thinks a mass shooting can't happen to them because the risk is so low. Doesn't seem that "rare" if someone has survived not one, but two mass shooting incidents in two different states, in 13 months time
