Disney Announces it is making "The Nutcracker And The Four Realms" Christmas Movie

Sounds like it's first weekend was a bust. I said the same thing about A Wrinkle In Time, but Disney really needs to stop making super creepy trailers for their "family friendly" movies. My kids get nightmares just from the teaser. I'd imagine there were a lot of other families with children who felt the same after watching this preview - and decided against going to see it.

It may have been a bust, but it’s actually a pretty good movie. Not my favorite Disney movie of the year, but I’d watch it again if I had the money to go to the theater twice for the same movie.

I plan to watch it. It looks visually stunning, eye candy. :) I'm sure the story will be entertaining enough for us to enjoy it.

Oh, I don't doubt it's an amazing film. I'd love to see it myself. Wish I could get my kids to be interested in it - instead of creeped out. For that, I 100% blame the trailer, lol. Just my educated guess that a lack of appeal to children is the reason it fell flat... and Disney really needs children to be excited about it if it wants to recoup on it's investment.

I think they released it 3-4 weeks too early. It should have been released Thanksgiving weekend at the earliest.
That would conflict with WiR2 and Mary Poppins. They probably had 1 too many large budget movies in the slate for this time of year.

But, WiR2 and Mary Poppins aren't holiday movies. They should have made Nutcracker the holiday season movie, and move one of the other 2. Probably WiR2, but that's just because I remember when I was little Mary Poppins being on TV every holiday season. Though, now that I think about it, maybe that was Easter?

Or was Wizard of Oz every Easter, and Mary Poppins every Thanksgiving? I forget which was which.

But those movies are dropping in high movie attendance periods. That's more important. They took the weakest of the three and moved it to the least desirable spot. Thanksgiving week is huge for families, therefore WiR2 gets the spot. And Christmas break is massive, so you put your really money winner in that slot, and that is Mary Poppins. Putting 4 Realms in those spots would have done more damage, since it isn't exactly lighting the world on fire as being a good movie. Put good movies in the best slots, the movies that are more iffy get the iffy slots. And that's what happened.

I saw it on Sunday. It was ok, not outstanding. Kind of reminded me of Narnia. I didn't like how it was filmed, kind of grainy.

It just seems that Disney has too many movies that can potentially compete with each other. There is only so many "family" movies you can produce in a given year. Families probably only go to the movies a few times a year anyway.

So . .I am just not sure why Disney bothers with these seemingly "pet" projects. They just don't seem to have an audience compared to all their other, more successful, films.

I agree...

A few weeks back, we started looking at what movies we might go see this holiday season (as in your example we only go a few times a year, really just one or maybe two)..

With a 10,6, and 4 year old we had choices of Nutcracker, Grinch, WiR2, and Mary Poppins...with our makeup, Nutcracker didn't really have a fair shot, especially with the bad reviews.

It's the same as any studio though. Why do they put out certain films that look like surefire misses? It's because they didn't set out to make a film that would miss, but sometimes, as the process comes through, things just aren't where they need to be. Sometimes there are delays and other factors that affect a film. Sometimes the dates move, and what could have been big on a different date now suffers upon release. In the case of this movie, extensive reshoots were needed, but the original director was unavailable, so a second director came in to finish it. Honestly, that's never a good sign. It happens.

Disney has had a run of a few years with a string of mega-hits, but that was unusual. Things have come back down to Earth a bit and I'm sure they will consider that as they determine future year's slates.

Because like Frozen, they never know when one is going to blow up, and they're usually deep into it, before they realize they've crafted a stinker. Better just to dump it out in the theaters, and steal at least a few dollars from their competitors. If Disney's main competitor is itself, everyone else is struggling for oxygen.

We saw it in Dolby Cinema at Disney Springs. Imagine Alice in Wonderland mixed with Narnia, minus Johnny Depp...mix in a little of that oz movie...

It’s a beautiful movie, but the story was lame.

We saw it this weekend. My kid loved it (he's 7). The scenery and costumes were beautiful, but I agree the story had some holes.

Considering taking the family to see this over the weekend but have been hearing very negative things? Is it worth it or would I be better off saving my money for another film?

Curious on family reviews too. I’m intrigued but I think my 4 y/o would be terrified. She didn’t want to see the in park sample screening. Lol

My Daughter a HUGE Disney fan and buff who is a Jr in College absolutely loved the movie, she went with my wife last weekend to see it. My wife thought it was terrible and had way too many holes in the story line to make sense. I refused to see it(my daughter and I usually go to these as Dad/Daughter nights) but I had no want to see this, and feel better about my decision after my wife told me about it.
