Culture Shocks and Disney Magic... in Asia!!! A TR on all Asia Disney Resorts! [Update Dec19!]

Day 6 [part 5]: Finishing off our First Night in Tokyo DisneySea

One of the things we noticed so far with our partial day in the Tokyo parks… there aren’t actually THAT many families in the park! It was a LOT of groups of school kids. So that means… that especially at this time of night… there weren’t that many kids in Ariel’s Playground! So of course, us Big Kids went and explored!

Here we go! YAY!
XqSSFpe.jpg

A general map of the place!
onOm1Ke.jpg

We found Prince Eric’s Statue!
uIbROcp.jpg

An area where there is a sign with Flounder on it
8mXshJC.jpg

It looks like the sign is telling us to pretend we’re flounder, and bounce off the “sails” ?? Yeah we think so. So there is a head cut off Glendon in that photo getting ready to bounce haha. If you really go at it, it’s actually a silly kind of fun! If only the sails went on a little bit longer haha. Mind you I guess we’re pretty big kids to be bouncing through there.

There was this one dark area that people were laughing and having a good time, so we decided to go over. It was basically just a small dark cave section. We had no idea why they had so much fun… except that there were remnants of some fluorescent green light fading out on the walls. WE COULDN’T FIGURE IT OUT WHAT DO YOU DO IN HERE?? We thought, okay maybe it’s glow in the dark! So we turned on the flashlight option on our phones and shined them right on the walls. Nothing. WHAT DO WE DO? Okay it’s not that hard. It’s actually quite simple. Just touch the wall. Hahahaha. So yes, we laughed ourselves silly at how we couldn’t think of that to begin with. Then we went and drew happy faces everywhere.

And Brian wanted to write his name haha
qndCfvI.jpg

Then there was this section where it was a full on rope bridge
59OXzEw.jpg

It looks so cool!
tJu2y6Q.jpg

And look how cute this underground theme is!

Oh I guess Ariel’s playground is kind of themed around bits of a sunken ship underwater, with lots of Ariel’s treasures around and underwater creatures everywhere!

Haha here is Jenna in the lookout tower
AhOASiW.jpg

Look at the multilevel of this playground!
8HlanWA.jpg

We were all exploring basically on our own, so finally I went to find Glendon.
I found him.
n9xVHhE.jpg

Hahaha I guess he finished exploring faster than us, because there he is sitting on a bench holding onto our new Giant Head Chip. Not really sure what’s going on with the group of people on the other side of the photo though. Time for us to go though, we were starting to get hungry!

AHHH! The store is called Sleepy Whale Shoppe. And it has a smaller sign on top that says “Shhhh”
PrnFejC.jpg

Look at its eye now! It’s closed!

We made a quick bathroom stop on our way out of Mermaid Lagoon. Look at this cute purse holder
QXHC1Jo.jpg

(No idea why I thought it was so neat, to be honest)

We had already decided earlier on that we would probably eat dinner from the Casbah Food Court in Arabian Coast. They have three places to order from inside: Flying Carpet Curry, Royal Tandoor, and Noodle Charmer. I’m a little bit confused why there were three food places inside… As far as we could tell, the menu was the same for all of them?

The theming is CUTE
ufc8f5t.jpg

Closer view of the menu
dEySw3g.jpg

We all ordered the Chicken Curry with rice and naan!
1mjue1y.jpg

(I think… Glendon also order a single chicken wing?!)

YAY! Look at the ceiling!
UJCtymg.jpg

I was obsessed with the tray…
YxelDrj.jpg

Because.. they have their own branded trays here per location!

Food was tasty. Nothing super exciting fantastic, but a basic curry meal. It was actually hot, which was a huge improvement over our disappointingly warm lunch! If you’re a huge lover of Indian curry, this is very very basic haha. Mild, not spicy, not deep in depth of spices… but I don’t know it was comforting on such a cold day. Kind of exactly what we wanted in that moment. We were happy! Our favourite thing about the place was definitely just how beautiful it is here!

After dinner, since we were in Arabian Coast, we decided that we NEEDED to go on the top level of the double decker carousel. Especially since there was no line up! All the animals are kind of a fun mix. You have your classic palace horses, but you also have some Arabian elephants, and even a Griffin! I don’t really know why.

Glendon and I being total weirdos
OyDJUNr.jpg

6T6Tw1o.jpg

Yes, I decided I HAD to ride the Griffin
UyK3jKM.jpg

And here is Jenna and Brian. Jenna is riding a Genie haha. And Brian’s just on a horse
wfZBK7H.jpg

Views:

Truthfully, you can’t really tell that you’re on a second floor of a double decker carousel. You still have a floor below you, so instead you feel more like you’re on a super indoor carousel haha. It does look cool from outside though. Very grand.

JK You can’t really see it at night time HAHA oops (need a better low light camera than my phone)
uZaRB3g.jpg

We were really excited to walk through again in the daylight to be really able to take it all in again. Everything looked great at night, but imagine it in the daylight!!

(I kept singing Arabian Nights to myself the entire time we were here)
uSB6nok.jpg

Aha! Another gift shop! Agrabah Marketplace
xkqTBQG.jpg

YEAH who else loves loud shirts!!!
KIhU7MA.jpg

OH MY GOD I FREAKED OUT AT THIS.
It is a keychain. OF MY DINNER!!!!!
F9NKPCq.jpg

EXCEPT IT’S EVEN BETTER THE MEAT PIECES ARE MICKEY SHAPED. I actually CAN’T GET OVER THAT THIS IS A KEYCHAIN OF MY DINNER! (Literally my reaction in the store. I’m sure surrounding people were giggling at me. I was going crazy at this. For real.)

ALL OF THE FOOD KEYCHAINS WHAT
DONALD TUBE BUN
KceryAJ.jpg

EGGS AND HAM IN PAN. POPCORN BUCKETS.
Qv1wEei.jpg

OKAY HOW HOW HOW THEY ARE SO TINY YET SO DETAILED!!! Yeah I still can’t contain myself about these. They literally look like you took the actual thing and stuck it in a shrink machine and then you attached it onto a keychain. Okay… who could’ve thought one could get obsessed with food keychains…

Okay, freakout over. But LOOK AT THIS AUTOGRAPH BOOK
jXCvCfM.jpg

APRIL, MAY, AND JUNE?! LITERALLY have never seen stuff with them on it.

Okay… okay… merch freakout actually over now…

Would you believe that Glendon managed to convince me that I didn’t need any of it?

Upcoming… Good night DisneySea!

All caught up again. The Japanese seem to enjoy strange merchandise!

Did you show a picture of the Giant Chip Head? Did i miss it?

So what did the curry taste like? Did it have a strong smell of curry powder? Or was it more like a Chicken Tikka Masala?

So...guess what - I'm planning my own Asia trip now! After going to Disneyland Paris this summer I really wanted to check out Tokyo disney. I thought I'd save the Chinese parks for later, but then I saw the Halloween decorations at Hong Kong, so wanted to check that out. And then it seems silly not to just go to Shanghai too so I don't have this one last park that I haven't visited! I'll need to re-read your TR more in-depth to get more tips!

Haha definitely strange merchandise. Lots and lots of characters on everything!

Giant head Chip, I didn't get a photo of on our night. I'm not sure if you watch the videos I upload at all but there's just a super brief overview of it when I was filming Mermaid Lagoon. The closest photo from this night would have been when we walked up to play the games and I took a photo of the game and you can see the prizes in the background. I think I have photos for future posts though!

I'm not really sure how to describe the curry! I think kind of a in-the-middle kind of taste. Kind of the flavours of chicken tikka masala... but it's not spicy at all

haha! That's what we say too whenever we think about planning another trip to Tokyo. Well... you're already there might as well do small trips to do the other parks too right? Unfortunately no Tokyo in the near future. The most we have is doing an extended layover in Shanghai in January. Originally we were going to transfer through Hong Kong so we were going to do a day in Hong Kong Disneyland but then our flights changed so now we're doing Shanghai Disneyland instead haha! No time or budget to add on Tokyo though

I just binge-read your whole trip report and am totally loving it!! I've never visited Asia before so I especially love all the cultural details and differences you've reported on, and of course I love seeing the parks! I can't wait to continue following along on your adventures!

Day 6 [part 6]: Goodnight Tokyo DisneySea!

On our way out of the park, we cut through Mysterious Island. And of course, we checked the wait time for 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Another waaaaaaalk on!

I tried to take a shot through our window of the “submerging” effect.

Then I tried to take some photos of the things you can see??
jTPfRol.jpg

There is an underwater creature…
67ibJsz.jpg

I don’t know why I tried to take photos with my phone under there haha. Those were all terrible!! Anyways by the end of our ride we realized that we were extremely exhausted. (The original plan for this day was to rest at the Sheraton Tokyo Bay for a day nap, transfer to the Tokyo Disneyland Hotel, then have an easy day resort exploring and visiting Ikspirai, their downtown Disney. But alas, the call of the parks.)

On our way out we wandered into another shop.

Look at this wall of Nanoblocks!

and I LOVE THESE LOUD SHIRTS

The middle one says Tokyo DisneySea in Japanese

And on our way out we caught bits of Fantasmic..
IdpiKFC.jpg

From what we could see, it looked like a pretty fun show! We definitely didn’t have a great view as we were on our way out already (the entire surrounding area around the lagoon was already packed even before we entered the gift shops… there was no way we would have been able to get a good show even if we stayed tonight.) But it gave us something to look forward to on our next DisneySea night!

My official Instagram story goodnight photo to DisneySea

And we hop back onto the monorail… I got to sit next to these cute guys

(omg my cold red nose…)

And here we are! The nighttime view of the hotel! (Technically this is the backside since we’re on the monorail side)

The staircase to bring you up to the lobby has this gorgeous Alice mural
wGDiAcs.jpg

(Can someone make a replica of this for my personal front entrance please??)

A view of the lobby

Since our room wasn’t ready earlier when we had brought over our bags, we had to officially check in and grab our room keys. There was a bit of a line up since I guess lots of other people were doing similar things as we did… activities during the day while the rooms were getting ready, and all checking in now. They also needed to verify each of us with our passport. By this time we were extremely tired. The fun part about Tokyo Disneyland Hotel is that not only do they have a gift shop, they also have a Japanese convenience store that’s open a little later as well. We picked up a couple of snacks, beverages, and small grab and go food items to bring back to our room!

So again, in this hotel, we didn’t have any queen beds. Our room for 4 adults consisted of 2 double beds, and since they don’t consider double beds suitable for sleeping 2 adults, we also had a single pull out in a chair-couch, as well as a single day bed. We were sooooo tired that we brought all our bags in and exploded. So we all forgot to take room photos before exploding!!

All I have for now is a photo of our day bed (which basically became our luggage storage and sorting area)
7yl5E5d.jpg

Also I was super stoked about my bag of matcha cookie biscuits from the convenience store
qMnioEQ.jpg

(I kept a handful of these in my bag everyday for emergency “I’M GETTING HUNGRY AND GRUMPY” snacks)

Our room keys are so cool though! Personalized with date AND names
E0WWD9L.jpg

And that was it, we were sooooo tired even thought it was still before 11pm. But we didn’t have a real sleep since technically this was a travel day! Plus we needed to get to bed early so that we could wake up for our Happy 15 for the next morning at Disneyland! We had a big game plan ahead of us! This park is their one that’s most closest to the American parks (Magic Kingdom and Disneyland) buuuuut obviously with their exclusive rides and Japanese style everything. We couldn’t wait!

Up next… DISNEYLAND!

Day 7 [part 1]: Happy 15! It’s DISNEYLAND day!!! MONSTERS, INC!
[Reference: Map of Tokyo Disneyland]

Here we are!! Our official first FULL day at a Tokyo Disneyland Resort park! We had BIG plans for our morning. From everything that we’ve read, and from Glendon’s previous experience, we did NOT want to miss out on FastPasses for their top attractions. We studied the map before opening so that we would for sure know exactly where to go. The idea of only 15 minutes extra over the general public seemed a little bit insane to us, since we’re so used to Extra Magic Hours being at least 1 hour extra. But that’s just how busy these parks get in Tokyo. Your advantage is only 15 minutes… but crucial! Plus, just like early morning Extra Magic Hours, you still have to arrive earlier than the allotted time because there’s always a line for that too! (We decided to be there 1 hour early.)

Here we are!! At the gate!!!
eqtpWQO.jpg

Not too bad, we’re basically right near the front.

View of our hotel behind us!
I6XFJ7J.jpg

So if you look at that photo of the hotel, you can see the big open walkway area that we’re standing on as well. This is the area they rope off for hotel guests. If you’re not a hotel guest, the line up for the general public is just off to either side.

The first thing we noticed while waiting in line, is that every group, each person was dressed up in matching outfits. Granted, lots of the people in line looked like school kids in their uniforms, then with matching headbands or something. But everyone had something to match their friends! AND FAMILIES WITH BABIES DECKED THEIR BABIES OUT IN THE CUTEST CLOTHES EVER

Like… look at these Duffy babies!
iVYoDoT.jpg

Another thing we noticed this morning, the line for the general public was waaaaaaay more packed than our Happy 15 line. We were late in leaving, so instead of being a whole hour early to line up, we were only half an hour early. And we were still near the front gates. When we walked by the monorail, we noticed HUGE crowds getting on to head to DisneySea. It seemed like most people use their Happy 15 on DisneySea instead of Disneyland. Something to note for our DisneySea morning!!!

A fun surprise: 5 minutes before park open, characters come to the gate to wave and say hello! LOTS of characters!!

If you can hear in the video, Glendon says “oooooh no the fairy godmother!” (we have photos with her later…) If you’re not familiar… the thing about the fairy godmother in Tokyo… it’s not a face character. The actor actually wears a mask. And it’s extremely creepy and weird but definitely a MUST SEE haha. They also have lots of obscure characters, which is so much fun!

Here is a 3 little pig at the gate
hruLhqB.jpg

AND THE GATES HAVE OPENED! We discovered that what the characters at the gate were for… They technically welcomed you to the park, but they’re also there for you to have an extra 15 minutes of character interaction and photos before you’re with all the extra guests. But we were on a mission: Monsters, Inc. Ride & Go Seek. So we booked it to Tomorrowland! And by booked it I mean we did our craziest speed walk ever. They had cast members wearing the giant Mickey mitt waving at people, while at the same time holding up signs that say please walk, do not run. And yes, every time our speed walking was faster than speed walking, we were told to slow down. (Glendon was surprised by this as he remembered when he visited a few years ago with his parents, that parents would RUN with their kids. It’s actually a story his mom likes to tell me all the time. That parents would pick up their kids and sprint to the attraction they wanted to be at!)

When we made it to Tomorrowland, turns out they didn’t have any ride open except Astro Blasters! No one was going there and we were confused. We decided to follow the people and stood behind a line for the FastPass booths for Monsters Inc, Ride and Go Seek.

The machines are cute! They say Giggle-o-Meter on them
kTTk9ri.jpg

AND THEN THE MACHINES ARE EVEN CUTER WHEN YOU PUT YOUR TICKET IN FOR YOUR FASTNESS! (The machine officially opened when the park opened. It was a little bit stressful because we knew the huge crowds outside were now streaming in and likely coming to exactly where we were.) So when you go to put your ticket in (these machines are just like the paper fast pass machines at Disneyland in Anaheim) except they’re all special to the ride. Like how these say Giggle-o-Meter on them, when you go to put your ticket in, it laughs and spits out your fast pass ticket! Haha I don’t know why I think that’s amusing.

Immediately after getting our fast pass, we went straight to line up for the ride. Holy cow, I was right all the people in the general public line was coming straight here right now. But luckily most people were coming to line up for the fast pass first like we did, so getting into the actual ride line wasn’t too bad yet. THE COOLEST THING EVER is the actual line up space. It’s basically the Monsters, Inc. scare factory, exactly like in the movie. IT’S SO COOL IN THERE. It straight up feels like you’re walking into the lobby of the scare factory!!!

Usually this atrium lobby area would be where most of the line up would be (and extended outside) but since it’s still early morning, we were basically walking right through. The rate at which the line was moving was really fast, so we could barely take in everything we were looking at, let alone take photos of it haha. The line only slowed down when we were past the atrium, in the safety precautions area.

Welcome to Monsters, Inc.

We were instructed to put all cameras and phones away for during the ride.(Apparently this is a pretty strict rule here.) So, I don’t have any photos or video of the ride. But long story short, we LOVED it!!! Monsters, Inc. Ride & Go Seek. What is it?? It’s an interactive dark ride! I would say that the closest ride to it in the American parks might be something like Toy Story Mania. But instead of interactive 3D screens, it’s all props and animatronics! So basically you’re on the hunt for Boo (there’s also no scoring system, it’s just for fun.) You ride through Monstropolis and you take your flashlight to shine on these tags and different monsters pop out every time one of the tags get lit! Super cute. There are scenes around the city, including the sushi restaurant, and ends in a scene with Boo’s door. So cute. So cute!!! We were so excited that we had a FastPass to do it again later on! Great start to our day!!! Success!

Up next… It's a Small World!

I’ll have to keep that in mind because I know I’ll feel the same way! Current plan is to fly from Hong Kong to Tokyo, check into Hilton Tokyo Bay (i decided not to splurge on Disney hotels because I’ll be solo so no one to split the cost), and Iksipari plus checking out the hotel lobbies.

I actually wish that we had more time to have been able to explore the hotels and Ikspirai! I almost wished that we kept to our original plan because in the end we didn't have that much time to do things at Ikspirai!

Thank you for all the amazing info on the Asia parks! My goal is to hit them all at some point in my life! I've been to TDL when I was young and TDS was not even built yet! But I really loved it though. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks so much for reading!!! I've read so many of your trip reports that for some reason I just assumed you'd visited all of them at some point haha. I wish that I could get more time off work, I'd totally do this Asia trip again.

Day 7 [part 2]: It’s a Small World After All! … and Breakfast at Disneyland!

One more view of the Monsters, Inc. Ride & Go Seek “front desk”

Because it’s so cute!

After riding Monsters, Inc., our biggest plans for the day included riding It’s a Small World, and grabbing fast passes for Pooh’s Hunny Hunt! The reason that we REALLY wanted to ride Small World was because literally this was the very last day it was open, before they went on a year-long refurbishment. We NEEDED to ride it! So the plan was to run over to Fantasyland, and grab our fast pass for Pooh’s Hunny Hunt, then go line up for Small World! (Silly us, we only just got our Monsters, Inc. fast pass not too long ago… it hadn’t been an hour already for us to get our next pass… So really, we were faster than our plan for grabbing the fast pass as soon as possible. Small World it is!)

On our way, we walked by this small area that was kind of all Pinocchio themed
Look at this fountain I found!

And this silly restroom sign!

(I don’t care that the song is repetitive and “annoying” … I LOVE It’s a Small World!!! It’s just so iconic.) I LOVE that it’s colourful, and that there’s a giant background to tell you that here is It’s a Small World. I love that each of the Small World rides, while all basically essentially the same ride, there’s touches that make it different. I love the giant background in Tokyo and how bright and colourful it is (although I looooove the gold and white in Disneyland. Florida’s is my least favourite since it’s essentially tucked away inside.) Anyways, loading in Tokyo is inside.

The biggest thing about riding this before their refurb, though, was that we heard they were giving out “luggage” tags at the end when you exit the ride. And I REALLY REALLY wanted one. (It’s literally just a sort of a paper souvenir type thing, to say thank you for riding before the refurbishment, we’ll see you again next year aha)

Cute!

After riding, we went to go get our Fast Passes for Pooh’s Hunny Hunt (the ride I was most excited for!!!) YAY! Now that we’re in possession of Fast Passes for two different attractions, it was time to get some actual breakfast! (Yeah, we definitely did not time manage properly in the morning and hadn’t eaten at all yet!)

jVOt0qL.jpg

0oGcKlS.jpg

We decided that we wanted to go back to the World Bazaar, because there was a bakery we saw called Sweetheart Cafe. (I don’t remember if I mentioned this already or not: World Bazaar is Tokyo Disneyland’s version of Main Street! When you walk into the park, you pass through the gates and enter this covered street. It’s great for Tokyo since their climate has a lot more rain, and even snow in the winter.) ANYWAYS! Why did we want to go to Sweetheart Cafe for breakfast? Because… Of the cute baked goods. ALL OF THE CUTE AND DELICIOUS LOOKING STUFF.

Curry Bread (290 Yen), Custard Bread (270 Yen), Rice Bread with sweet bean filling (230 Yen)

(Also omg, look this woman has keychain Snowgies on her. And the cutest Mickey luggage purse??)
mQ3NIRs.jpg

How does one choose which pastries or other baked good to get??? (Glendon doesn’t want me to have a bad day so he would NOT let me order a danish at all in case they were super loaded with butter. But they’re so cute how can you say no to a Mickey shaped danish…) So for myself… all I got was the curry bread since I was pretty sure everything else either had a lot of butter or was made with milk. I would have definitely have gotten the Mike bread, but it was labelled as Melon flavoured and I am not a fan of any type of melon whatsoever and I was worried it would have a very strong melon flavour. Glendon got himself the meat pastry danish, the sausage danish, and a Banana and Walnut muffin. Jenna also got the meat pastry danish, and she got the Mike head bread. I forgot what Brian got haha. But truthfully I think he was a little scared off by some of the more Asian-flavoured items.

And coffee. Jenna and I also definitely got coffee

I was super curious about the Mike head bread, though. I was really glad Jenna took the plunge and bought it. She’s also not the biggest fan of melon things, but she doesn’t mind eating them. So she took a bite and offered to let me try if I wanted to. I only wanted to maybe have a bite if it mostly tasted like bread with a hint of melon, but she said you could easily tell it was a honeydew flavour. She said it was a little bit strange since it’s bread, but she didn’t hate it! Ahhh Mike bread, you are so cute to look at though. So I guess if you like honeydew and want to try bread that is honeydew flavoured, definitely give the Mike head a try!

Up next….
All of the cute things!

I can believe all the super cute pastries they had! I like melon, but a honeydew bun doesn’t sound very appetizing to me :confused3 The Monsters Inc Ride sounds so cool!
