Parents of the High School Class of 2017/College 2021

Last year her and her room mate shared a jack and jill bathroom with the room next door-the other girls never bought toilet paper so it got to the point my daughter and her room mate would leave it empty and just bring the roll in with them when they wanted it- eventually the other girls swiped one of those giant rolls from a public bathroom and put it in there. This year it is just her and her room mate (same one as last year) sharing one bathroom so they are very happy. hey are each brining their own pots and pans because they said they don't want it to cause any issues if one doesn't wash it one day and leaves it in the sink and the other one needs needs it- good planning LOL. My daughter is bringing the micro and the other girl is bringing the blender and toaster.
after the issues with the girl from nextdoor/bath mates my DD put her toilet paper and anything she needed in a bag caddy and carried it to and from the bathroom. Well there will be 4 girls so it will be interesting to see what rules they come up with. One of the new girls and dd seem to be hitting it off. They exchange a few text messages already

I don't really have anything interesting to report. DS19 heads back in 2 weeks and he can't wait; he's been ready since about 2 days after he got home. It hasn't been too hard having him home as he has an opposite schedule. He's been working 5-6 nights a week and doesn't get home until I am already in bed.
He's a pretty easy going kid for the most part. My only complaint is that his room is nasty. But, I know he'll clean it all up before he goes back since he knows we won't drive him and his stuff if he doesn't. My glasses cabinet is half empty at this point, lol.

That is exactly what we’ve said to her since the beginning of the summer. I told her it’s just a courtesy. It’s what adults do. I even used her brother, DH and myself as examples. Apparently among her friend group we are the only parents who ask this of their kids. Therefore we are so “over the top controlling”.
You are not over the top controlling and the fact that she can't see the difference between that and common courtesy just supports how much growing up she still has to do. Heck, I'm 46 and MY mom would worry if she hadn't heard from me in several days.
I have no advice as I am at a loss as to what I would do in your shoes. Hang in there!

I have some good news to share! My DS 21 just finished his Finance Internship and got a job offer. The position is for a Financial Analyst, salary $63,000 a year with a $6,000 signing bonus - so a $69,000 package!!! He's not sure he's going to take it because he doesn't like the company's location, but it is so nice to know he has such a great job waiting for him if he wants it. He is going to go through job recruitment at school this fall to see what else is out there. He has until October 31st to decide.

That is great!

DD finished calc 3, she is happy she took it and has it over, she got an A.

I had ordered her hunter rain boots from d sporting goods they never arrived; when I called they had been returned to the company and were no longer available and they had no idea why it happened. I found some on eBay I bid on them. ~ Mom all the girls wear them.

Her computer finished crashing and it was sent to dell Tuesday. She was afraid her dry socket from the wisdom teeth removal was infected so she had them look at it Friday while she was in town for follow up appt for ortho. And she had lunch with her Aunt that day and she collected money from her selling sweat corn that we grow. I think so makes a small fortune from it.

We might borrow GMAs truck to help move her stuff this next weekend.

She is proofreading DS's essay for college applications.

For more cash she picked up some more bbsitting and mowing. I think next summer will be different she will want to be where BF is located if she can. But she is willing to get an intern there and or take summer classes there.

I don't think she is taking a bike this year back. The sidewalks are very bad there and are at time shared with the walking students and she is not a confident rider.

DD packed up her car and went back to school this afternoon. She had to go back a few days early for a CPR class and job training. We've been running around the last couple of days getting her unfurnished apartment stuff all ready. I just finished chalk painting the last of the furniture this afternoon. All the girls rented a Uhaul together. One of the dad's will bring it by my house on Wednesday evening to get her furniture. I'll either go up to her school on Thursday or over the weekend to help her get settled. I am pretty much on my own with helping her move due to DH's hip replacement surgery. Thank goodness for the dad with the Uhaul!!! The apartment opens up on 8/16 and classes start 8/20. I go back to work for Teacher Work Week tomorrow. The summer is officially over.

DS starts classes in a week. I loved having him home this summer even if he does make me crazy with all his mess and noise. He is not in the dorm this year and signed a 1 year lease so he won't be home next summer. It feels strange. I wonder if he will ever live in our house again.

DD was able to get a "dream" campus job!
She will be working in the dental simulation lab on campus as a lab tech.

She's very excited, since undergrad students normally never step foot into the dental school. She will have the unique opportunity to learn from/observe current dental students and meet/interact with the professors.

She's hoping this will be a game changer when applying to dental school, since it will definitely 'stand out' on her applications.

WoooWhoooo gainful employment, makes a parents heart twitter! Congrats, its great to have options, it may not be ideal but its a foot in the door and depending on location, that appears to be a great salary!

DD is all moved in and starts classes today.
I had an amazing road-trip with my adult kids - it was so much fun, we logged 1900 miles, wandered thru 5 states, ate some amazing food, saw some amazing things and just enjoyed being together. Right now I am dealing with post vacation blues along with the empty nest as we left DD 900 miles away and then put DS on a plane home 2000 miles away.

I'm vacillating between complete meltdown mode and just very touchy - like I feel I could cry at the drop of a pin. I have dealt with this off/on over the years between #1 off to school 10 years ago and then us moving etc. but its still hard and I hate the interim of "getting used to" the new normal.

DD goes back on Monday. She gets to move in a week early because she's in a living theme on campus apartment. Classes don't start until Aug. 27th. Her roommates will also be moving in on Monday. They've been chatting and added each other on snap chat and instagram . She's been chatting a lot with one girl. The 2nd girl finally joined in and did a group chat. The 3rd girl that's in my DD's program hasn't really been intouch. I guess she only text this summer because she needed some answers for online summer school class they took and she wanted my DD to send her pictures of the pages from the class book. The book was only $12 and there's to many pages to take pictures of every book. The 3rd roommate isn't really interacting with the other girls and only responded in the group chat that's she's moving in on Monday too. I'm really hoping they all click. DD is super excited to meet the girls in person and she's packed up and ready to go.

We just need to get a few things like a pan and a pot. The day of we will buy her a few groceries . Move in week they do a lot of activities and feed the kids all week atleast they did freshman year :) habit, papa john's, BBQ hotdog and hamburgers, free days at the food place and other stuff

My DD's 19th birthday is tomorrow and she's spending it with her boyfriend at his family's cabin. She wants to buy her own birthday cake since she doesn't trust her BF to buy one. I'll sneak out and get one for her instead. She moves into her sorority house on Monday. Classes don't start until September but she has to help prepare the house for Sorority Rush. She's really looking forward to meeting a lot of new girls and being part of the process in selecting new sisters.

She re-took a class over the summer (a terrible grade from spring semester :headache:) and she got an "A" on her second try :dogdance:. I told her that it will look great on her transcript that she (a) had the motivation to retake the class and (b) that she crushed it on the retake. Of course, an "A" the first time would have been better, but there is something to be said for tenacity and learning from your mistakes. Her fall schedule is a mixed bag of prerequisites for her major and fun classes that count for graduation requirements. She'll be taking an art class and another acting class. Both count toward some graduation requirement, although the acting class is more generic ... I don't mind her having some fun along the way as long as she doesn't end up on the 5-year plan.

DD's enjoying a short break between summer and fall semesters. She was at church camp with us for a week. She checked her email while there and found she'd been given another scholarship from the cc's Foundation so another semester with no tuition due pixiedust:. Rent is up this year since she's on a 10 month lease instead of 12. She'll be with the same 3 girls and hopefully all will continue to get along (one is really picky about noise such as two people just talking in the common area at 9pm).

She has a boyfriend now that she is just thrilled about. She's never had anyone that she gushed over (unlike her sister who crushes on boys all the time) but she's gushing now! Kinda fun to watch. Sounds like a really great fit- he gets her goofy humor for one thing and dishes it back.

So I guess everything's coming up roses for her right now, except her Grandma's health which is concerning us all greatly but hopefully will improve.

Anyone else in a completely different frame of mind this year compared to last year? Last year I had lists of lists and things completely organized. We leave on Friday to take DD back to school and haven't done much of anything.

Yes! I just mentioned to DD that she should probably start getting her stuff together, rewash bedding that's been stored in the basement, see what she needs to buy (laundry detergent, shampoo, etc). Last year at this time everything was done and ready to go. I'm also not nearly as emotional as I was last year.

My DD is moving into her sorority house today! They have to be there early so they can prepare the house for rush. She's really looking forward to it. Bad news is that her room is on the 4th floor with no elevator! Good news is that she has two strong boys helping her out so I don't have to carry stuff up to her room.

Definitely. My DD knows what she needs and wants in her room and I'm letting her lead the way. We did take a run to the Ikea about 75 miles away because she wanted a specific type of container for under her bed.

That's too funny, we did a run to The Container Store about 40 miles away to look at under the bed storage.
