I'm thinking this would be a great goal to train for my first 5k. I love treadmills but can't stand outdoor running. Will I be intimidated? How much is it? Any other helpful information? I assume it's all beach running or is it sidewalk?

No charge.

It is a fun run and not even officially timed (there is a timer there, but it is not official - you don't wear a timing device, etc. - and it could not count as proof of time if you needed that for something).

All pavement/tarmack. You run on the old air strip and around the bike loop - no beach running at all.

But it is HOT. Even in February it is hot.

The 5k is a low stress run other than being HOT. Since it is not officially timed, if needed you can only complete one loop or end early if needed. There is also water available on the course. There will be some runners who take it seriously, but for the most part it is a fun 5k, with low intimidation.

You're supposed to go around the bike loop twice but most of us that are not used to running and only did it for the medal (yes we walked the whole way), we only went the bike loop once and finished within 28 mins walking. Everyone got a medal even if you didn't go the entire way. It's just for fun! You'll be able to do it. Enjoy!

I'll reiterate the HOT part. I'm in the mid Atlantic area and run all the time, even when we've had days hit 100, and I've ran the CC5K twice, in Aug and Oct, and both were the hottest runs I've done. That being said, it's a fun event.

I used it as motivation to train as well when we sailed last October. Our DD17 at the time had joined cross country at school and was really getting into running. Our family of four all decided to run it, and I am glad we did, such a fun memory. I didn't train as hard as I should have LOL! I walked a lot of it but did really push myself. We have the medals hanging up in our bedroom and, like I said, it was a fun memory, and I'm so glad we decided to do it and would definitely do it again! Have fun!

Note, the 8:15 and 8:30 are if you dock on time. We didn't. They had characters hitting the Theatre (5k gathering point) and the atrium for a bit and I don't think we all made it ashore until 10.

This was my first 5K many years ago. It was fun, not intimidating at all. In fact the host (Joshy) that morning kept saying "this is a fun run." People run seriously, run for fun and run/walk, cut it short etc. Everything goes. Like another post mentioned, I had two kids into cross country running, so my husband and I ran too. It was a really fun, free, family activity. And the medals are better now than they were years ago. It is hot, but doable. Start well hydrated, eat smart for breakfast, listen to your body (don't be afraid to walk a bit if you get too warm and not used to the weather) and you will have a great first 5K!

I know I’ll get flamed for this but please do not cheat yourself. Yes it is a fun run but this is dishonest. If you want to do the 5K please complete the 5K. If you want to walk the course and only do one lap fine. If you are putting in the work to train for your first event, you have set this goal and you can accomplish it. It is a fun event and even if it might be a little boring (and hot) you will enjoy it and the medal will be well deserved.

Because this is a fun run, you are only hurting yourself and tarnishing your accomplishment. If you just want the medal, message me, I have extra and you can have one of mine.

This sounds like a great goal! You are opposite of a lot of runners who hate to run on the treadmill (I am a cross between both). Do yourself a favor, and MAKE yourself do a couple of outdoor runs each week. It will build strength and confidence to get out of your comfort zone.

If you are newer to running or seasoned, come check out the DIS running thread:

All are welcomed--newbies to competitive.

No flames from me. I won't claim the medal, wear the shirt etc. Unless I finish the race. Bad running karma otherwise

Our run host actually said that most people skip the second lap, in fact he encouraged people to do so, as when you add the distance from the shio to the start of the course you do over 5. We did the second lap, but with the whole thing and the walk to and from the ship we did 7.2k. Love my fit bit!

I can not agree more. DW and I did the 5k and neither of us were in shape. We went every step of the way and I mean E V E R Y S T E P. I didn't think we were going to make it. We walked.... pretty much all of it. But we did it all and felt so much more accomplished for having done it and the medal means something to us! Note: we came in over an hour, and the CM was not there handing out the medals, but if you go to the store they will give you one anyway.

YOU CAN DO IT!

I have walked/jogged it twice...its HOT but a nice 5K. My son is a competitive runner but too young to leave the ship alone, so I mostly did it to have something to do while he ran. (He usually runs it and then jogs back to wherever I am and jogs me in, lol) We both enjoyed it.

The heat (both of these were in early January) was not awful for me walking but he said it definitely affected his time, and he's used to running in heat. It is a very humid heat so it definitely feels even hotter than it is. (At least both times we did it it was humid...and we're from the midwest where the summers are all humid and still noticed it).
