Disneyland show?

I think I'll have to tune in this week - I was starting to bypass this show but if Mary Jo is on - I'm in. I'm just hoping we can get the rest of the gang back in. Nancy always has great info/content for people with children so I miss that. Personally I miss Tony's personality the most - he cracks me up.

Yes, ITA re:Nancy. The perspective of someone traveling with kids (which is the majority of DL visitors) is sorely missing right now. The most valuable advice I got from the DL show with regards to planning was how to introduce rides to young children. It was from Mary jo and nancy. I share that advice with everyone I know taking little kids who've never seen disney.

Whether change is good or not good depends on what changes are implemented, why they were implemented, and the desired end goal(s). Change will never please everybody, but how well change is accepted depends on how effectively the latter two are communicated. And in the case here, there is plenty of room for improvement.

While the following ‘statement’ written by me after divining the tea leaves around why the change would have occurred would be unlikely to change the opinions of those listeners who are not happy with the change, it would set the record straight as to why the changed occurred and the likelihood of any reversion back to the old format. Had something similar been released with the return of the show some of the angst seen here may have been able to be avoided.

****My thoughts and words. No affiliation with Pete or Dreams Unlimited Travel.***
The old podcast format was not meeting the marketing and revenue generating needs of Dreams Unlimited Travel. The DIS Unplugged Disneyland Edition with its news heavy and timely information format attracted a primary audience of Disneyland locals. Unfortunately Disneyland locals are not Dreams Unlimited Travel’s target audience. They do not generate revenue from their Disneyland stays. They would only generate revenue if the Disneyland locals decide to go to WDW, maybe Aulina, or on a Disney Cruise. In order to improve The DIS Unplugged Disneyland Edition’s performance as a marketing vehicle it is changing to better attract a different customer/listener audience, the non-Disneyland local, Disney fan who is interested in a trip to Disneyland. To this end the timely news and information segments of the show are eliminated as they are of limited value to these listeners/customers. These listeners are planning trips to Disneyland months out and are going regardless of what the current Disneyland news is. All that is relevant to them are the macro level Park news items. At that news level a full team of Disneyland locals is not needed, as there is not a need for in depth multi-perspective news related discussions. This change reduces the show’s production overhead, facilitates pre-recording the show as the need for immediacy is no longer present, as well as allowing for an easier transition to a primarily video format. While the hosts of the previous show did a good job with vacation planning, the planning assistance in the new show is going to be better.

The new DIS Unplugged Disneyland Edition that has been created to meet these needs is a totally new show. The only things it shares with the old show are the name, the sponsor, and the subject of Disneyland. While there may be some tweaks to the new show, the news and rapid fire heavy format of the old show will not be returning; neither will its primarily locals perspective nor will the base return to California. All the fans of the old DIS Unplugged Disneyland Edition and your long time loyalty to the show are greatly appreciated. It is hoped you will stay on with the new show and the DIS Unplugged family, but it is understood if the new show no longer meets your needs. If you leave, well wishes and know that you are always welcome to come back.
*****End of fictional statement*****

Being direct about change is frequently not popular, but sometimes it is better just to rip off the Band-Aid and be done with it. Letting false hope linger delays closure.

That’s essentially my first post in this thread. Pete is motivated by what is best for his business. I have no problem with that, it’s his business, not mine.

Doesn’t mean that I, or others, can’t express unhappiness with the changes.

And my primary unhappiness with the changes isn’t so much the content (which I think is a little weak and unimaginative), but I lost my local/CA and beyond Sunday night Mixlr community.

I miss being able to interact directly with Tom, Mary Jo, Nancy, Michael and Tony (Tony was the first DL DIS member I met, funny story) through Mixlr each Sunday and I miss that.

I don’t always like change. But the fact that the new show seems to be less in content (and other factors) makes it smart more.

The original wasn’t a video podcast so it wasn’t watchable in any way.

My only complaint is while I love Pete and Ryno I wish there was more of a local component. Yes Tyler and Katrina are locals but I would like to see even more local components. It’s still early though.
Even you agree. Please tell Pete, Mr. DIS blogger.

Ok, here’s what I hate about the shift the most:

- I NEVER want to see Tyler chewing food again. NEVER. If you do a food review, follow how Magic Journeys does their edits. It’s not single camera watching someone chewing.

What I’d add:

-hey, how much does Uber cost to go to Safeway from my hotel on Harbor Blvd. and back?

-Pizza Press moved. How can I get a pie when leaving the parks when they close?

-I’ve arrived late morning/midday in Aneheim, and don’t want to burn a day of my Park Hopper ticket. What can I do in the meantime? (Hint: Orange Market. Wait, is that what it’s called?)

“Hey, the economy is improving - but not for me. What are the best lodging + transportation options for me in Aneheim/Orange County?”

That would be cool.

We haven’t talked about Tony much and what asset he was. One of my favorite segments Tony ever did was...if the park is opening at X o’ clock, here are your best bets for breakfast/coffee and still make rope drop. He considered arriving from several different directions and the park opening at multiple times. It was a high quality segment. This would be a great one to revisit. I sorely miss Tony and hope we see him again.
Everyone knows I am a big Tom fan because he was so insanely dependable, the show always went up and always on time. Tom was a great host but he doesn’t begin to get enough credit for what an excellent producer he was getting everything edited nicely and posted timely, managing the feed with careful attention.
Nancy gave a mom perspective, which is sorely lacking across Dis content.
Michael’s history segments were second to no one.
And Mary Jo, holy bananas she has worked so hard to support and promote this new version on the boards. Mary Jo has been supporting the DL forum for 20 years. She’s answering questions in the comments and the amount of love for her in the YouTube comments is great. I hope Pete realizes. What an absolutely classy lady.
I loved the first few minutes of chat, where you could ask any of them any question and they would always be so kind and helpful. They were always very gracious to their fan base, a very classy bunch all around.
I miss them.

I missed the previous DIS-DL gang!
Even though they're audio only, their chats are more like the DIS-WDW show on Tuesdays, a conversation between friends. Now I feel that it's more formal and stiff.

I've never watch the current DIS-DL show, because I only get a chance to listen to it at work or on the drive home. That's why I don't mind the audio only format. I also feel that the current DIS-DL show is not as casual as the audio only show. Since I believe that the show was taped anyway, why not have the ol' gang back? Pete can still moderate the show. It would be nice to have Tom, Michael, Mary-Jo, Nancy, and Tony back together again.

I think you hit the nail on the head stating that it was a conversation between friends. I feel like we got to know these people more in this format and it felt more personal. I loved hearing about their families and how they all enjoyed DL together ie Michael and Carol taking their granddaughter to the Tiki Room, Nancy riding the train around DL while her girls napped and so on and so on. I think we get that to an extent on the WDW show with Cory/Julie, Nancy, Teresa etc. but the DL show is severely lacking that now.

During this weeks discussion on the railroads, I noticed a few mistakes in it. I'm a railroad fan and have read Wlat Disney's Railroad story a few times over. First of all Stea engines running on bio Diesel or Deasil don't really make much difference as a steam engine is more efficient a burning the fuel then a modern diesel is. Alos bio Diesel isn't just french fry oil it's just one source of it plus they use a mixture of it with diesel fuel, I think WDW uses it as well but in a different mix, the Disneyland does.

Secobd the Lilly Belle isn't a Cabouse it was the original observation car from the passenger train set that used to run in Disneyland. Back when Disneyland first opened there were two trains a passenger train set that only stopped at main street and a freight train that only stopped at Frontierland. Later on when the added more stations and the grand canyon they found the passenger set was inefficient for loading and unloading and they got put in storage and later sold. The freight team set was renovated into one of the side facing sets of cars.

Thank you for the added knowledge and clarification. Also, I found out that the trains aren't on the berm, but just inside it.

What we had learned on a tour at Disneyland was that after using the oil for the french fries Disney uses it for the trains instead of tossing it, and that might be the reason the steam engines might smell like french fries. They were illustrating on the tour that those who run Disneyland are always trying to figure out how to do things more efficiently. We went on that tour back in 2009, if I remember correctly.

French fry oil is just one part of bio Dassel. As one of the engineers who used to do the railroad tour at WDW qaid "you can burn anything in a steam engine even uranium." I think saw somewhere that Disneyland used a 70 to 30 mix of Bio-Diesel and diesel fuel whereas WDW used a 60 to 40 mix, It more has to do with the size of the steam engines and what they are "most happy" burning.

I wonder though if people that love that level of detail are the people that contact Dreams Unlimited to book their Disneyland vacation or if they have enough knowledge to book on their own and thus the target market of the podcast might be different than the market they were actually getting :confused3

Good discussion, I would counter that this entire board draws at least some business from Dreams because you have so much information readily available. First time visitors often post a thread to the DL forum and a whole chorus of voices will give them feedback on their plans. The amount of wisdom and experience available here is overwhelming.

I also think the same argument could be made for the huge amount of WDW content. If reading one or two news story is targeting the wrong audience, what about the mountain of stuff for WDW?

Am I likely to ever use Dreams for DL? No, honestly not unless they worked some kind of special promotion with an offsite hotel like they have done in the past in Orlando.

But when I plan a Disney cruise, an ABD or go to WDW? Absolutely, even if it's just a small token to say thanks for the content. I actually think hard core DL fans are a AWESOME target audience, we have no other contact with travel agents and we are huge Disney fans. Maybe instead of just focusing on bringing current clients to DL using Dreams, focusing on the DL fans and build the relationships so you become the brand they trust.

You are so right! I’d never use a travel agent for DLR trips, but I’ve booked ABD tours and a trip to Aulani through Dreams Unlimited. And I’ll use them again if (when, I hope) I ever make it to WDW. So, yes, many hardcore and experienced DLR visitors make great prospects for other Disney-related travel business. Thanks for mentioning that!

Mousetalgia announced this week that they’re launching a separate news-oriented podcast in the next two weeks. That might be an option for you.
I for one was happy to hear that.
I know they said this was months in the making, but really good timing with the DIS Disneyland changes.
This may be where a lot of the old listeners go, while Pete focuses on getting the demographic he wants.

Yep, It is DL this time but my friend mentioned on Wed that they are planning a trip to WDW and my first suggestion was the Disboards and the content the team is putting out. I think my friend is overwhelmed and if she needs a TA I'm planning to recommend Dreams Unlimited.

I dunno if you noticed or not, but watching the DIS team eat their food without cutting away is kind of staple of their vlogs. This isn't new.
Ryno and Craig especially, we've seen them stuff their faces in every food video, and i wouldn't want it any other way :D

Thank you for mentioning this- I had no idea! So sad to look up news articles to see they've already closed doors on the original location.

I have only ever consumed DIS media on YouTube, so never experienced it as a podcast. MaryJo's dialogue on the most recent show was highly enjoyable. As far as Tyler and Katrina, they seem like very nice and helpful people- but I often get the impression they are not yet fully relaxed/able to be genuine on camera/around Pete. That could improve with time; it bums me out to see people unkind towards them.

I would love a source on Disneyland that provides local insider viewpoints, perspectives, and information. When I don't care for WDW DIS food reviews/in park videos there are other options. With DL, there are far fewer options and many of the vloggers I've come across have an obnoxious voice/persona that I can't connect with.
