Hit the Beach! July Exercise Challenge

:welcome: to the July 2018 Exercise Thread! It's high summer in the Northern hemisphere, and time to hit the beach! :beach: (Does anyone else remember that Jaws was set before and during the big July 4 weekend on the fictional Amity Island?) We'll be taking a look at ways to still get your Disney fix while soaking up some rays on the beach.

If you’re returning, we’re excited to have you back! If you’re new, welcome to the team! Here’s how it works:

Each person chooses a time goal, and posts minutes toward that goal as they exercise. (You can post daily or just catch up when you can.) You decide what movement counts towards your goal, which can be a nice round total for the month, a specific number that means something to you, or a calculation based on a target number of minutes per day.

Since July has 31 days, here are some common conversions:

15 minutes/day = 465
20 minutes/day = 620
30 minutes/day = 930
45 minutes/day = 1395
1 hour/day = 1860

One of the special motivations of our Disney challenge is color changing! Page one will be updated with individual and team color changes as we make more and more progress. This month our color changes will relate to supplies you'll want when you're on the beach. The categories are a bit random, but as everyone* knows, a towel is the most important item you can carry. (*at least everyone who reads Douglas Adams)

Beach Chair Blue 10%
Cooler Orange 25%
Sand Pail Purple 50%
Floatable Flamingo Pink 75%
Underwater Camera Red 90%
Beach Towel Green 100%

We’re officially starting this challenge on July 1, but if you don’t find this thread until later in the month, you’re still welcome to join!! Just post your goal and I’ll add you to the list. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions, and to check out old threads to see what’s been going on.

Hi!

I did this years ago while I was training for my first Princess Half Marathon and it worked great for me. I'm running the Wine and Dine Half in November and I'm trying to get myself into the habit of getting in an hour of walking or running each day and eventually increasing my long runs. I'm scared to put 60 minutes a day because I feel like I'm setting myself up for failure. I'll give myself a little slack and go for a little less.

I'm in for 1700 minutes!

Thanks for hosting! I really appreciate it!

(Ps - Love the Hitchhikers reference)

On this first day of July, let's visit DVC's first off-Disney property, Vero Beach Resort, which opened in 1995 near Vero Beach, Florida. It's about a two-hour drive southeast from WDW, on a barrier island on Florida's Atlantic coast.

Vero Beach Resort's theme is "Old Florida," particularly the Treasure Coast and historic Indian River County. The hotel's design evokes coastal lodging from the early 20th century. There are only 211 rooms, making it a much smaller resort than many of the WDW hotels. To help with relaxing, you'll find hammocks, rocking chairs, and porch swings.

Trivia: Vero Beach Resort includes a tribute to a major league baseball team. Which one, and why?

Los Angeles Dodgers, who held spring training in Vero Beach from 1948 to 2008

(Image from verobeach.disney.go.com - Doesn't it just make you want to go to VBR immediately?)

Finally, Happy Canada Day!

Love the theme! Wish I were at Vero Beach right now!!!

Since I barely made goal last month, I'm scaling back to 1500 for the month. The heat is causing me to slow down a bit.

Thanks for hosting, sophy1996!

I am in for the month. I am going to shoot for 1860. Last month I did way over 45 minutes a day so figured I should up it. The month will start out rough as my ankle is not 100% yet but really close. Driving seems to be what is bothering it the most. I also woke up with a really bad back ache. Advil is helping but not talking it completely away. I will have some making up to do this month. This shouldn't be a problem since the kids will most likely be at my in-laws the end of the week and the whole week of the 16th.

Good morning from the lake, and Happy Independence Day to everyone in the U.S. (or just Happy Fourth of July to everyone).

Congratulations to Twilight Sparkle on being the first team member to turn Beach Chair Blue!

One of the coolest things about Vero Beach Resort is that its beach hosts sea turtles' nests (the beaches along Florida's Atlantic coasts are hugely important nesting areas for several turtle species, including loggerhead, leatherback, and green). In the spring and summer into fall, the turtles come ashore, dig a nest, and bury their eggs. Vero Beach Resort offers a Sea Turtle Night Walk, including night-vision goggles, so you can watch the turtles preparing their nest and laying their eggs.

After a couple of months, the baby turtles hatch and head for the sea (hopefully!), navigating by natural light (starlight, moonlight) on the water. The resort helps the turtles by trying to minimize light from land, so the babies don't get turned around and head inland instead of out to sea. (Disney does NOT offer night tours during hatching season -- it's too dangerous for hatchlings for people to be on the beach at night.)

Last summer the Disney Blog featured a nice article about a rescued dog that finds sea turtle nests to help in turtle conservation.
