I parked at Epcot today to take monorail to TTC and visit Poly and GF. When I got to bag check took several photos of the long lines at security to send to my wife. Checked other bag check area it was long lines took a photo of the crowd. Was getting ready to give up on my plan when a new bag check line opened up I went through bag check and a plains clothed security person immediately introduced himself-very pleasant- said they noticed me taking some photos and wanted to know if I was taking photos of security personnel said no just the crowd. He said ok, couple seconds of small talk and I went on my way to the monorail

I would expect that if they're doing their job. They need to do their best to stay on top of the fact that if someone is planning to do harm, they don't have an opportunity to document the process. For most of us we just go through and don't think anything of it but the security people who actually care about what they're supposed to be doing would not allow that, same rules would apply for recording airport security check points. Makes sense to me.

I'm guessing it was due to the MK TTC security incident that happened the other day with a youtuber.
His bag was taken by another guest and security apparently didn't want to help get it back and they just said go talk to guest services so he had some choice words and they didn't like that he was taking photos. Police were called and he was arrested.

I think that your behavior was very suspicious, and I am glad that security didn’t ignore it.

Taking photos of security checkpoints is always a suspicious move. If you try that at an airport at the TSA checkpoints, be prepared to miss your flight while you are interrogated.
I did that on 9/20/01, flying out of MCO.
Bad idea. At the time, though, they weren't organized as well as they are now, so they just made me stop.

In the world we live in today they are just doing their due diligence. Pretty standard for well trained security to make contact with someone/something they are trained to look for so they can assess the situation. There have been reports for a while now of people being approached for pictures and filming of security check points. Seems like you came across as not a threat and went through the actual security process fine, so no harm to either side.

I’m in WDW now and I have to say that security has really stepped it up. We went to AK and MK today and every bag was thoroughly checked, every stroller was checked, and every person went through the metal detectors. In addition, bag checks and metal detectors were at the entrance to the monorail from GF, Poly, and Contemporary. It seems that there are much more security guards all around the area. Getting checked went by quickly and I’m not complaining at all. I’d rather everyone get thoroughly checked in this day and age. It makes me feel safe and I can enjoy myself even more knowing that I am safe in the parks.

And in Disney fashion (inconsistent) ... I went to MK today and some bags were checked closely and some only patted down, only about half were asked to go through metal detectors even though there were no back up of lines AND even though myself and DS2 were asked to go through metal detector they looked at DS1 (disabled) and were going to let him bypass it. We said "no, make him go through" .... how easy it would have been to have him carrying something unseen ........... they need to be putting everyone through or it's pointless.

Oh, wow. The inconsistency is nuts. I agree with you!

Yea in today's world that isn't so odd and actually needs to be done for security of everyone.
I may look at things differently since I work on a federal complex where everything is secure and you aren't allowed to take pics and there are security cameras everywhere.
