Universal Studios - Hollywood?

All,

While I am a seasoned vet when it comes Disney World, I have never actually been to Universal Studio's. Now my kids are old enough they want to see the Harry Potter rides and exhibits. However, we are going to the Hollywood location as I am down there with work.

I'm looking for some inside information on hotels mainly. We are a family of 5 so most of the hotels I have looked at via priceline and the like are over $400 per night for a family of 5! At this rate it will be cheaper to go to Florida!

Anyone got an info they can share or guide me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance...

My family just went to Universal Studios Hollywood this past October. We stayed at the Magic Castle Hotel. It is super close to Universal and reasonably priced. The rooms are pretty basic, but we liked the location, you get free breakfast and snacks, and it is very family friendly.

We stayed at a hotel close to the metro on Hollywood boulevard. We didn’t know anything about LA before we left. The surroundings weren’t the best. But the metro took us close to the park.

Universal Studios Hollywood is nice. A lot of the same rides as in FLA. But they have the studio tour, which is great.

Hi! We just stayed at the Hilton in January, which is right next to Universal Studios. Couldn't have been more delighted. Nice hotel, great staff, lounge and restaurants. Easy walking to and from the park, but there is also a free shuttle. Parking was charged - around $25/night, but don't recall exactly. I would definitely stay here the next time we go to Universal Hollywood. Also, the closer to your stay that you book, the rates tend to go up. I always book a cancelable reservation as soon as possible. Have fun!

Which Hilton did you stay at? We are going to be staying at an IHG Hotel for a couple nights but to save more money we're looking at a Hilton hotel for another couple nights.

It was the Hilton Universal City. 555 Universal Hollywood Dr, Universal City. Very close to Universal Studios park.

Yes saw that one. Looks really nice. Was deciding between that and the one on N Highland.

Thanks for all the replies, I checked in with the Garland which has kids rooms, but they were over $400 per night! Seems a little excessive to me, so we are looking at the Hilton on site so we can simply walk to the gate. Any input on the 2 hotels right there at the entrance?

We stayed at the Hilton because we get points, but I think the Sheraton is good too. The Hilton is *slightly* closer, but both are quite easily walkable. :) I would not hesitate to stay at the Hilton again.

I've stayed at both and liked both. You cannot beat the convenience of walking to the park entrance. It is an uphill walk, so Hilton is closer and a little easier to walk. Both have a shuttle, too, I think, but I believe the shuttle drops off at Universal city Walk which is past the the park entrance.
