Winter Olympics

What are your thoughts on this athletes performance? https://www.yahoo.com/sports/bad-american-skier-games-system-make-olympics-070235305.html

The article said that the event is still fairly new, but is this actually one of the best athletes that this country could have sent?

She isn't even from Hungary - she is an American who had a grandmother from Hungary.

I suppose if you really, really wanted to make it into an Olympics, you could find a sport that has a reasonable small number of entrants and figure out a way to game the system and get in. Not sure why this woman would go to this much trouble to ski like a tourist down the half pipe, but more power to her, I guess!

Because she can now call herself an Olympian and no one can take that away from her.

If his B sample comes back positive and their medal is taken away, would the loser of their match get it? Or would it become vacant?

I know in individual competition everybody below moves up a notch, but not sure how it works in team sports.

I believe everyone moves up a spot as that’s what happened after the 2000 Olympics in gymnastics when the Chinese women’s team were eventually disqualified because one of their athletes was too young. The USA team got their bronze medals 10 years later!

Seems she was for Hungary. You have to give here credit for sticking to it.

Not the first games this type of thing happened, remember Eddie the Eagle.
How could we forget? He and the Jamaicans both had very heartwarming, feel-good stories and they absolutely dominated here in '88. But I also saw the point of the other, much more accomplished athletes whose performances, as well as the actual competitions, were totally eclipsed by the buffoonery. Nobody cared about anything that happened in ski jumping or bobsled other than that Eddie and the Jamaicans made it down the hills without killing themselves. :rolleyes1

Well she got her qualifier points. So more power to her. Remember Eddie the Eagle from years back?

I really see it as no worse than skaters from France and Russia competing for Germany. or speed skaters that live and train in the Netherlands competing for Canada and the United States.

I suppose that plus $1.50 will get her on a bus ;)

Hey, who knows, maybe 30 years from now, Disney will make a movie about her. ;)

Why not? Rudy worked. So did Cool Runnings. Just add a few untrue embellishments and poof. What a great movie.

I was reading an article and a sports psychologist seemed to have the impression that at least a portion of it isn't that our athletes aren't as good but that their competitors are just better and have been getting better over time.

As for ice skating..actually some of the prime time footage is actually stuff shown earlier in the day (unless it's listed as LIVE). We record all the stuff and it's interesting how much replay some stuff can actually be in various events that they replay for prime time. Also replays can occur for me depending on the event at like 11pm-4am time frame. Also for us the Olympics is shown on two channels. It happens where an event starts on one channel and finishes on another channel.
Actually, all of the figure skating is being shown live. It's being shown starting 8pm EST which is 10AM KST. This is different than many competitions and is taking a lot of adjusting for the figure skaters because they are used to competing in the afternoon or evening on the regular. Many have to be up at 4am KST in order to do pre competition practice/warm-up and then compete a few hours later.

Hmm I was fairly certain that I have seen non-prime time figure skating. Could be my cable provider though. IDK.

It's all been prime time for the states unless you don't live in Eastern Time Zone. They purposely did that for this Olympics so it could all be live. If you see other things then it's a replay.

I'm waiting here in Ontario to watch the skating and it told us it would start at 9:45 . It is always on so late.

It's the winter Olympics. the United States is hardly ever a powerhouse. We don't really have many cross country skiiers. And that jobs us in biathlon too. Ice rinks are struggling in many cities here. And we have very few facilities for long track speed skating.

Enjoy it now Norway, Canada, Switzerland, and Germany, because in 2 years, we'll get you our pretties. And your little dogs too!!!!

As for the next winter Olympics, I'm out recruiting right now.

I did find it interesting at least in terms of figure skating many seem to train in Michigan that includes many not representing the U.S.

Aww....Madison Chock and Evan Bates just had a big fall in Ice Dance. I am so impressed by figure skaters who fall, get back up and keep smiling. I would burst into tears right there for sure.
