Planning a Vegas/Grand Canyon Trip for May, 2018

As the title states, I am in the early stages of planning a trip to Vegas and Grand Canyon to celebrate my dd21'st birthday. It will be me (adult-no age needed), dd21, ds19 and ds13.

I don't need much help with the Vegas part as I have been several times (although I am open to suggestions).

I need help figuring the Grand Caynon part. It is easier/better to rent a car and drive? Take a tour? Should we stay overnight at the Grand Canyon? If so, where?

I am hoping for 2-3 days in Vegas and then 1-2 days at the Canyon.

Thanks in advance

I would say staying overnight is better. Staying in Tusayan (a mile from the entrance) isn't bad though, but right in the park would of course be better. However, since the last time I went, the options are more limited than they used to be.

If you can book early enough, I think the Bright Angel cabins are in an ideal location.

We're doing this same thing, except California is included too, but we are staying in Tusayan. Wanted to stay at El Tovar but is booked for our dates. We plan to do the drive, as I believe it is a 4-5 hour drive (depending on your driving style, too) from Grand Canyon to Vegas.

We're doing 2 nights at our hotel in the Grand Canyon. It has free shuttle to/from the Canyon. But who knows we may still drive there as it is very close.

The Grand Canyon South Rim area is really great if you have a car. You are in the Williams, AZ area which has a bunch of Route 66 attractions and fun roadside attractions. At each lookout point in the park there’s a free bus to take you to the other look out points and trails on route. I’m not sure if the other entrances have that but it is really helpful.

Stay overnight. Sunrise over the rim is amazing - the perspective really shows it's the Earth rotating into the sunlight and not the sun rising over the Earth. By far one of my favorite experiences ever.

Delgadillos Sno Cap is a great slice of old Americana roadside diner in Seligman, Arizona on Route 66. If you have a Cars fan in the car they'll love it. And good burgers, fries, and shakes. Worth the detour coming/going from Vegas.

We're going to be at the Grand Canyon in May. Any idea what the weather is usually like? Would love to see a sunrise as well.

Oh wow. Interesting...

Yup, I've been camping at the Grand Canyon in the spring when days are beautiful but at night it's freezing. Once left out a pan of dishwater and in the morning it was frozen solid!

Lol...So even though we're going in May it sounds like not only are we wearing long pants and jackets on our flight down (airplanes always cold for me) but we will also need them for the Grand Canyon...Thanks everyone for the heads up.

It's cold at night there. It's not a problem if you stay indoors. And if it's freezing in May it usually doesn't get there until maybe early morning. Here's May 4, 2017, which was more of an early morning freeze but where it didn't get that close to freezing in the evening:

It's odd too. Some days last May it never got over 50°F, but it gets to freezing about every day.

I was there in June and I was wearing shorts during the day, but putting on a jacket in the early evening going from the cafeteria to our cabin. I also went down into the rim, where it gets hotter as you get further down and where the heat is trapped.
