Sunday morning in LA?

This July, we'll be going to Southern California. We'll be doing Universal on Saturday, and then heading down to Disney Sunday afternoon/seeing the park on Monday. We're staying at Grand Californian, so we're wanting to enjoy the hotel on Sunday evening, but we're looking for something to do on Sunday morning before we drive down. We did a tour of LA when we were there a couple of years ago, so we've done lots of the major touristy stuff- Rodeo Drive, Hollywook Blvd, the sign...
We were looking at 3 different things that looked like they would fill a few hours, but had no idea whether it would be a waste of time doing them on a Sunday morning: Griffith Observatory, La Brea Tar Pits, and Venice Beach.
Feedback on any of those things? Or other things that we're not considering that would be good to do on a Sunday summer morning?

We are planning our first DLR trip. We are spending a couple of days in Hollywood/LA area before heading to DLH. We are stopping at the science center to see the space shuttle on our way from LA to DLR.

None of those things are a waste of time if it's something your interested in, which really depends on your travel party and interests. If you have kids (or adults) who are into prehistoric fossils/history they'll like the Tar Pits. My boys (10 & 8) love them, I think they're boring. Griffith Observatory is great but will get crowded on a summer weekend morning as there are all the tourists plus all the locals who hike up there, but if you get there with time to find parking before opening you'll be fine. Venice Beach is great if you're want to see the whole Muscle Beach/skatepark/bohemian street performer scene, but again get there early as it gets packed in the summer. Skuttle's plan to hit the Science Center is also great, the space shuttle is really impressive.

Just those three things will more than fill a few hours. Travel time alone will take up a significant amount of time. Not a waste of time on a Sunday morning.

How much time do you have?

Just the morning. We're only planning on doing one- my biggest concern is whether any of these things will be completely dead on a Sunday morning (like, do people go to Venice Beach first thing in the morning, or is it only full of fun things to see in the afternoon. Same thing with the Observatory- are there any programs running then, or will it just be walk in, look around for 30 minutes then leave sort of thing...)

The observatory opens at 10:00 and will be pretty busy as they don't sell tickets in advance for the shows and people start lining up to get show tickets. There will be shows going all day starting around 11. I've been on summer weekends and it's generally pretty busy. I've never been to Venice beach on a Sunday morning but I assume it's like most southern CA beaches in July and will definitely start filling up by late morning.

I would recommend Venice Beach in Santa Monica before it gets crowded and less traffic. However, our family loves the beach. It depends on what your family wants to do.
