Runs on Starbucks

I need a place to track my training progress so I guess here is as good as any.
I’m Lynae. I work at Starbucks. I love to run.
For me, running has always been a safe place. I ran track & field in middle and high school, and ran on my nights off. I picked up running again when I was older as a way to lose weight, and fell back in love with it. There’s just nothing quite like that runners high. But, for me, it’s more than that. It’s the only place I feel whole and completely myself. There’s an urgency in it. I have a condition called Trigeminal Neuralgia (it’s closely related to MS) and the possibility that I may not always be able to walk, let alone run, is always wandering around my mind. So for me, all I want to do is run and push the limits. I ran my second marathon this year, and was hoping for a sub 5. The look on my face crossing the finish line at 5:02 is heartbreaking. So here’s to getting under 5, and eventually under 4. Maybe throw in an ultra marathon in there.

So on my training plan, I should be running 2 miles today at a 13:39 pace. I’m working on a continuous running plan, as I have only run intervals in the past. With today being my first day on this, I didn’t want to spend the whole 2 run staring at my watch. So I set out running and just ran at a slow pace that felt comfortable and where I was by no means pushing myself. I know 2 miles is out of my apartment and one loop around the trail, so I didn’t have to think about distance, either. I could (and did) easily sing along to my playlist and at no time felt out of breath or tired. I really felt like I was going slow. So, at the end of my run I looked at my watch and saw that I ran a 10:55 and 10:51. ****.

@DopeyBadger is this typical? Do others experience this too??

Well. Here’s to hoping I run slower tomorrow.
Enjoy a picture of my and my dog Flapjack. I can only post from my phone, so sorry if it’s huge.

I'm not the expert, but I will say it took me a long time to get used to running at the easy paces. Now that I have gotten used to it I love it, but at the beginning I was going out way faster than I needed to. From what I have read of other's reports, they feel the same way!

Excited to follow along!

It takes most people about 2-3 weeks to adjust to the slower running. For a select few, over a year. But few have such a discrepancy as yours. I would say to continue to train by the paces scheduled, but we may make an adjustment later on. The key is that right now it's easy and you don't have much cumulative fatigue. So easy feels easier right now. But the plan is written so that you aren't building too much fatigue early on. So if you train too hard now, you'll be able to complete the workouts. But come a few weeks/months from now, you'll be paying for training too hard early on. So try to stick to the slow, and then we'll adjust later on if we need to.

I *still* struggle to hit my pace and I'm 8 weeks in my first DBP training.
This is my second plan of his. So I’m really #killingit hopefully soon we will find that right pace.

Good to hear, I think? I’ll work on running slower tomorrow, for sure. And actually look at my watch. I honestly thought I was running so much slower.

@KSellers88 @Katie Little yall are so sweet. Thank you!!

Well. Day two didn’t go quite as planned, either. 10:51 and 11:36. I really, really worked on running slower today. But, I also lost an earbud and spent some time looking for it without pausing my Garmin during mile two, so honestly, I’m not running much slower. Probably about the same as yesterday. At least the weather was overcast and slightly chilly, my favorite. I have 3 miles on the schedule for tomorrow, which I’m trying to decide if it would be best to do it before or after a hike. Maybe if I run it after, I’ll actually hit my target pace. :upsidedow

Just keep trying to run as slow as you can. Ask yourself as your running this pace, "Could I run this pace forever?" Not like literally, but that's kind of how it feels to run EA/EB. Barely even trying at all.

How did you get the stats to show on your pic like that?
I personally use an app called FitSnap that allows you to put stats over an image from other apps (like Runkeeper or Strava) but I also think both of those apps do the same if you click "share" on your activity after you run.

Yes, I use the Strava app and upload a photo, and when I press share, it lets me pick how I want my stats shown. :)

Okay. Well considering my pace should have been 12:48, today wasn’t *terrible*
I did not want to run today.
11:37, 12:17, 12:23
I woke up and it was 30 degrees. I took my time getting ready, and it warmed up to 34 before I made it out the door. At least it was no longer freezing.
Today is also my last day this week doing fasted cardio, which is my preferred way to go about shorter runs. But, since I open and have to be at work at 5 AM, I just can’t make myself wake up that early and get it done. So we will see how it goes running with food in my belly.

Excited to follow along!
Your attitude about running is so inspiring- we should all feel that way :)

PS... Not to sound like a total fan girl over here, but I really LOVE Starbucks. I hope working there is as awesome as I imagine it would be.

Haha well thank you. I really love working there. They treat their employees very well and I have some crazy good benefits. I’m going to school and they are paying for everything. Which is the main reason I started there. Plus, I get all the coffee I can drink. What more could you ask for? :ccat:

Day Four-Three Miles

After ten and a half glorious hours of slinging lattes, I was thrilled to hit the road. But look, I’m still running too fast. Maybe today was just a good day, because despite being long, I had a *really* good day/week at work, but I felt like I could have ran another 10 miles.
11:06, 11:32, 11:15
Apparently I suck at running slow. But it’s slower than I ran on Monday. So I’m getting better I guess. :confused3

Also, a friend who works at another store brought me these YAH mugs back from Hawaii because he knows I collect them. Aren’t they beautiful??

Day five- Three miles

I’m not running today, because I have the flu and it is hard enough to stand. Here’s to hoping I’m back at it tomorrow.

Your running spot looks beautiful!!
