Fleet deployment with new ships

How about if they do something like the Queen Mary and dry dock the old ones and turn them into hotels?

Along these lines my idea was to put one at Port Canaveral. Think how many people come in a day or 2 early. I would love to spend it on a decommissioned ship based at the port

I'm not sure there's anywhere they could put a decommissioned ship at Port Canaveral. They're trying to fill all the docks there with cruising ships.

If they did that, I would just stay on it for a week or more, as long as it had all the shows and other activities like they do now--that would be my whole vacation. We cruise for the ships, doesn't matter where we go, except for when we went to Alaska. I'd love to do a cruise in Europe, but we're waiting until our dd is older. Best part about this idea is you wouldn't have to worry about seasickness.:)

While we were sailing Alaska in 2016 we noticed several larger ships while we were on the Wonder. Now that the Panama Cannel is wider, is the Dream and Fantasy too big for the ports or Tracy Arm/Endicott options?

How about these?

Disney Ship A - Bahamas 3/4 days out of Port Canaveral
Disney Ship B - Bahamas 3/4 days out of Port Canaveral
Disney Ship C - Eastern/Western Caribbean 7 days out of Port Canaveral
Magic - Canada/North Europe/Mediterranean (permanent)
Wonder - Alaska/Mexico/Hawaii out of Vancouver and LA (permanent)
Dream - Southern Caribbean 7/10 days out of Miami, Key West/Bahamas 4/5 days out of Miami 6, Western Caribbean out of Texas 7 days
Fantasy - Eastern/Western Caribbean 7 days out of Miami

That’s pretty good, except I’m guessing either the dream or the fantasy will be leaving the Caribbean for at least part of the year. Shift ship B to the dream itenerary and I think you might have something! The dream could then spend some time in Europe to free the Magic up to try some new stuff (south pacific or South America)

While the Dream class ships will fit in the New locks, they will not fit under the Bridge of the Americas.

Fascinating, it’s 16 feet too tall. Though there are other ways to get the ships to the pacific, if they take a dream class to the pacific, it will likely stay there for more than a season, so to the expense of moving it.

I hadn't thought of the bridge. I'm surprised that replacing the bridge was not part of the project. A lot of ships that would fit into the new locks will not fit under the bridge, limiting their actual use.

I'm from Australia and I'm sure I read somewhere about Australian being the fastest cruise growing market atm. I would love Disney to bring a ship her fro oct-march south pacific itinerates. However the "Disney" brand in regards to cruising and holidays is not well know. Most aussies wouldn't even realise that wdw and dl are different places. So they would need to advertise quite heavily I would think. However I do think they would so very well once the word was out, it would be a way for aussies who couldn't get to the US to go to Disney.
I do think it is unlikely though but fingers crossed, because id like to cruise Disney more!

What types of itineraries typically appeal to Aussies? I mean, where do they go and generally, from what city?

I thought about this some, and the bridge is 201 feet tall which probably covers all tankers and most container ships fine. Cruise ships are taller than you realize.

The greatest number of cruises tend to leave from Sydney,Melbourne or Brisbane. The itinaries are usually to New Zealand, Tasmania,Cairns and pacific islands such as Fiji, New Caledonia and Vanuatu.
Disney could do some great itinaries with the Great Barrier Reef and maybe some one way trips to Western Australia.

This all sounds fantastic

Interesting. NCL is sending Bliss to Alaska through the canal. That's a significantly larger ship than the Dream class ships. But I can't find any specs on the height for the Breakaway+ class ships.

Speculation aside, I'm sure DCL has some plans, they just haven't really revealed any yet, besides it will be 6 years before the fleet is fully up to the 7 ships they have announced. I expect them to do some test itineraries to gauge the desirability of putting any ship in any one location. I know that they're going to implement that plan in early 2019, the Westbound Panama Canal trip leaves a full 2 months early (In Feb instead of April) from FL, and once it arrives in San Diego it will spend 2 months there conducting 14 Mexican Riviera Itineraries, I suspect to see if they can sustain full bookings for a ship to be based on the West Coast (likely San Diego don't hold out hope for LA), before the Wonder proceeds to Vancouver to begin the Summer Alaskan Cruise season.

It’s quite possible, likely even, that Disney took the new dimensions of the Panama Canal into consideration in the new design. It would be easy to design a slightly bigger ship with a few less feet of clearance in the top. (Funnels would need to be a bit more compact than dream class) The ability to quickly move from pacific to Atlantic would seam desirable enough to impact design.

Of course they only move 1 now on a regular basis so they may be ok with the new ships not having that capacity. Only time will tell

You make a good point about the new ships. I think versatility and future proofing would be a good reason to ensure the new ships could go wherever they might need them in the next 40 years.
