Selfie Sticks on the Ships/Castaway-Allowed? Frowned Upon?

Taking a cruise in a couple weeks with my wife. It's hard at times to get pictures of us together so I was thinking of getting a selfie stick to help out. I know they are forbidden in the parks but are they allowed on the boats? What about castaway cay? If allowed, how many evil looks will I get?

Thoughts/opinions?

Thanks in advance for he help!

At this time they are allowed onboard the ships and at Castaway Cay. Will you get nasty looks? Probably.

"Evil looks" are earned by people who don't show consideration for others. If you use it out of others' way (taking some family pics on the ship where you aren't blocking others' view of an attraction/activity, or on Castaway Cay), then you won't get evil looks. If you use it in others' way (while in the crowd during a deck party or other event, for example), then you will get evil looks.

For character greetings you can give your camera to the cm and they will take pics of you. We have asked other cruisers to take a pic of us and have always found someone who will happily do it. Likewise, we often take pics of others if asked. I don't think I've seen anyone with a selfie stick on a ship before, I thought they were banned.

Not on DCL.

Selfie sticks were banned in the theme parks “mostly” because morons kept pulling them out while on rides, even when announcements were made not to. They can be annoying and cause minor injuries when used in public but can be life threatening when used on fast rides.

Sadly, no. I wish they would be.

Selfish sticks are uber annoying - unless you are on your balcony, it's going to be in someone's way. Just ask someone to take a picture of you. I've never had any issues with that - and I cruise and travel solo. Never felt the need to even consider a selfish stick.

Depends on usage, will you be taking a handful of pictures per day or are you a vlogger who will be documenting 17 hours of your life everyday?

Speaking of asking a stranger to take a pic I've thought of keeping an old cell phone in my back pocket and if someone asks me, use slight of hand and then throw the old phone overboard! How funny would that be!

That's just a joke it just reminded me of a tv show that did something similar.

Haha, I'd have a laugh at that.

Inspector Gadget would have enjoyed the selfie phenomenon, go-go-gadget arm!

Those ”wands of narcissism" should be banned from everywhere. Anyone using one in a public space should should have it taken from them and given a colonoscopy with it.

You'd be looking at a hefty fine for throwing something overboard.

Have to agree. Nearly got beaned in the head several times on our Baltic cruise in 2015. Occasionally by the same person. I don't think it's possible not to be in someone's way when using it since typically they are used to take selfies in the same area where everyone else is - usually at a tourist attraction or on the ship where walkways are not always very wide. When taking a picture of oneself using a stick, one's focus is generally on the camera at the end of the stick and oneself and not on where other people are walking or standing. By its very nature, it tends to be intrusive.

DH runs around with his SLR camera so is frequently asked by people to take pictures because he appears to know what he's doing. He never minds and it's a good way to open the conversation with someone who is on the same cruise and who you may run into again later.

Maybe it's just me, but I find when I try to take a selfie my smile and look is all warped from when I'm just smiling at a camera. It's the act of having to hold the thing out from me, I think.

On the last 14 Night Westbound Panama Canal Cruise I encountered at least 2 people using monopods or selfie sticks and both of them were constantly walking around the ship in virtually every venue and on deck narrating their trip, (I'm assuming for video vlogs that they were doing for reviews or such) and they had no shame about doing it. Although, during the Panama Canal transit a LOT of other people broke out the sticks to document the Wonder being the first Cruise ship to transit the new expanded Panama Canal locks. I myself have a small hand held "grip" that lets me mount my phone or GoPro to use when I want to video or photo graph any of my personal encounters.

Banned, no. Very frowned upon, YES. Mostly because the majority of people who use them are very inconsiderate of people around them. I understand that when people are on vacation, excitement sets in and we may become a little scatter brained, but I have seen very few people who exhibit common sense when using selfie sticks. I absolutely despise them, especially since I have actually been clonked with them. They should be be banned from every corner of the universe.
